    Alia, I'm a 57 year old granny with a high school education. I also have pesky leukemia. The chemo Is making me forgetful and...dumb.
    Last year, I began a mission to understand physics. When Quantum Entanglement won the '22 Nobel, I was hooked.
    Algebra came back easily. Then, so,much harder.
    I decided to begin by understanding and documenting inertia.
    Today, I found you.
    I can see that I'll be watching everything you've done, pen and paper ready.
    My husband is an aerospace engineer, but I want to do this alone. With your help!
    Thank you!

    Hey there. You took the reciprocal inside the log without taking a negative sign out.
    The reason why the log gave a negative number in the first place was because you took dm = delta m but in fact dm = - delta m since the rocket is losing mass.
    To provide more clarity, dm is the small change in m right? i.e., dm = final m - initial m and since final m is smaller than initial m, dm will be negative. So the differential equation will be m dv = -u_e dm and now the log will give u a positive value.

      I think she did mention that it was a negative value but glossed over it a bit, but thanks for your input as I was lost at one point and I found your post helpful.

    Thanks Ma'am for the simple derivation of the rocket velocity eqn. But I notice at 10.36 min, you get a logarithm of the mass ratios (m_2/m_1) which is negative, whereas on the RHS we have the difference between the Final and Initial velocities of the rocket which = negative qty. You have flipped the final and intial mass symbols conveniently, to make the logarithm positive- but is this correct- as the math should tell you what the results will look like, isn't it? Could you please explain this please?

    • @utuberaj60
      @utuberaj60 2 года назад

      * I meant the LHS (left hand side) of the equation which is the difference in the rocket velocities between points 2 and 1 (V_2-V_1)
      Sorry for the error

    • @micahpalin6136
      @micahpalin6136 2 года назад +1

      so what really happens at least I think is that there is a negative in front of the dm as it is decreasing. This means it results in ln(m1)-ln(m2).

    America's perspective on history has been similarly slanted regarding all other countries in all areas of achievment. In school we all learned of Lindbergh's record solo flight across the Atlantic. No one that I knew except for my parents was aware that the British were the first to fly non-stop across the Atlantic (Alcock and Brown in a Vickers Vimy).
