Interesting. I've never heard of the Page 47 Method. When considering what book to read, one variable I use is Goodreads ratings. I try to look for at least 4 starts, 4.3 preferred. (But granted, if I see that a classic has a lower rating than that, I won't look down on it. Goodreads is just one criteria.)
The page 47 trick is so good! We do judge a book by the cover or synopsis. This is a great alternative

Yes, I agree, Goodreads is a useful resource. Sometimes even the 1-star reviews can be interesting, too.
