I feel for you guys who love video when it comes to looking for gear that is reasonably priced and functional . As a stills photographer, I only need a reliable camera and a good prime lens . I need low weight and functions that with the click of the dial I can switch between monochrome to colour etc . Sadly , my EM10 Mkii is capable of doing all that I need a camera to do and my phone compliments it at the wide end . I gave my firmer dslr to one of my of nephews as he was thinking of taking up photography and I wanted him to have something useful to help him discover his favourite focal length and then have an idea of which lenses he liked , match those to s camera system that complimented the lens choice and not box that operates the glass I would love to be using 5x4 film camera , but looking after the grandchildren so my daughters can pursue their careers, MFT is the way to go I discovered . Interesting review .
Your Olympus video footage is the best I have seen you take. And I have watched all your videos. If you think Fuji would have produced better video, you need to stay off the Whacky Tabacky.
On a side note, they catch a lot of fish because they regurgitate it to feed their offspring. Nothing more appetising than partially digested swamp fish.
Espen Helland just dropped his third video on his trip to Costa Rica shooting wildlife. He used a 300mm on an old em1 II and the stuff looked great. I'm happy with my Olympus gear and want an OM-5 if they ever make one!
Bro the GH6 literally takes care of all your "deal breaker" complaints. It deserves a go with you. Think back to the G85 days to warm your heart... then try a new Lumix.
When I had my EM 1 ii + 40 - 150 2.8 Pro, the clutch engaged made the manual focus 'linear' but yes it was sensitive and also 'stepped', not smooth. If I remember correclty, without the clutch engaged, it had that horrible non-linear 'acceleration' feel however for static shots it was much smoother and was way more accurate. I used to use the linear clutch focus for fast moving objects because of the muscle memory of the linear feel and the normal manual focus mode for static things for accuracy.
I use the Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 PRO lens with the MC-20 2X teleconverter...so that puts me at f5.6. The sharpness is still quite nice even with the teleconverter, but I would like to have more light so I don't have to turn up the ISO so much since I'm using fast shutter speeds in photos. That's what this lens is for. Even if you're shooting 120 fps video, that's still just 1/240 shutter speed with the 180° shutter rule. My E-M1 Mark II only goes up to 60 fps. I am looking for bird photos where the shutter is 1/500 or, ideally, even faster. So, every bit of light helps, and that's why you want this f4 lens.
You should customize one of the bottoms to turn on and off the peaking. Than it’s stays as long as you wish. Ficus preconfigured while zooming only good for fotographers like me. But even I use autofocus usually
The 300mm lens works better if you disable the manual clutch in camera body and then set MF to On in camera then the CAF menu goes to CAF+M, you then have CAF with manual focus over ride, no need to push the focus ring into the manual focus position.
How are you doing this? Not how my Em1 mk2 reacts. In video mode, CAF doesn't have the MF option. Only by switching the clutch can you do manual & auto focus while recording.
How do you get all this awesome footage of birds eating their prey? Slow Mo looks fantastic. I can't even find squirrels in my neighborhood! Well, my Lumix G95 would never focus on it anyway.
I still have a functioning OMD EM5 first edition from 2012. These things are built like tanks. Ive used mine for video and pictures in Tokyo Japan Hiroshima Japan and all over the Philippine islands where the humidity can be unbearable at times without a single missfire. Thanks for the fun review.
I know. I love how small the system is while still having a sensor 8x the size and with pixels more than 3x as large as my cutting edge 2100 dollar smartphone. It's absolutely amazing! The quality from my little gm1 I got for 300 bucks is better than the photos any of my friends post of Instagram muahaha. They can't understand why my photos look so good printed either because they just shoot with their stupid iPhones.
The bird at 6:10 may be stealing food from the spider's web. I don't know about all birds, but Robins, when they catch bees, whack them and rub them against trees to remove the stinger before eating it.
The Olympus Rectal Camera Inspector. Make a shirt with a person putting on a glove, keeping the spirit of Olympus alive haha. Oh, the person has to be small, like the sensor
More than 25 years as a professional photographer and videographer and the M43 is the most enjoyable system to use, in my opinion .Who cares about marginal iQ gain or DR stops in extreme situations? The OM1 is a VERY good option for a lot of things. I really don’t care if a Porsche is faster than my Land Rover Defender! They have different purposes! Those comparisons are pointless!
With IS in video with 600mm eqivalent I honestly think you expect something no camera can provide. It being lightweight is not helping. If you try to stan still while watching on something other than what your eyes would see, even if your hands are still, your frame will sway. It is just physiology. If you use stills-oriented IS you end up with jerks. If you use video-oriented IS you end up with sway or wobble. Either way it will make you sick. Either you get seizure or nausea. Sync IS is optimized for photos so it is seizure. But maybe there is some other setting of IS?
On my E-M5 III, I set the 2.x teleconverter button to peaking and when I press that I get peaking for the duration of the video, visible on the screen/viewfinder as i adjust manual focus (works in C-AF as well).
Imo swaying is far leas distracting than jerks. You even see swaying (to a lesser degree) in professional cinematography as a technique of hiding shakes.
Just imagine NOT using the 300 f/4 because it sits crying in the case with the EM-1 Mark III - mine does ! imagine having a lens that is just as sharp if not more so, but with the flexibility of ZOOM ! Yes, it's expensive, but when you want the best, you'll pay for it ......... ED 150-400mm 1:4.5 TC 1.25x IS Pro on the OM-1 ..... Now you're talking ... :-)
GH6 drama has been blowing up all over youtube for months, it's the gift that keeps giving. Panasonic. Soon, it will be your time to shine - don't let us down bird boy.
Kasey, I know you probably have considered this but given the shaky aspect, is it possible to add some stability in post with a small crop? Try it out and see if you can correct the wavy, shaky aspects? Give it a go
Is it worth it in 2022? Yes and 23, 24 ....... and on I hope. I like I can carry 2 cameras, 4 lenses that cover 7mm-300mm all in one bag and can carry it hiking around all day like it's not even there. Shame people who try it for video knock the hell out of the system when it does such an amazing job with photo's. You know, the thing camera's were originally made for? I personally would never buy a mirrorless or dslr to shoot video.
For photo, there is a huge IQ diference between 300mm F/4.0 and not only 75-300, but also the two 100-400mm lenses with m4/3 mount. For 4k video, camera will downsize the images, so IQ differences will become smaller, although is still visible easy. So yes, video is more forgiving with weak lenses.
Hey, Sam Dan, love the videos and you actually know a bit about videography. I film club events mainly at night very low light situations, people dancing and partying, clubs have dance lights and strobe lights and sometimes it gets bright then dark again, i have a fujifilm xt3 and I love it don’t get me wrong, BUT dang, I’m looking back at the footage and I would say 30% of the footage is out of focus, i need auto focus on, I don’t have the extra seconds to focus if I were to use manual focus, I love the slow motion feature of the camera, but I wanna get something that’s really ganna capture the moment, I am getting paid for these clips and the edit! WHAT CAMERA SHOULD I GET!😫
When are you going to try out the GH-6? We know the AF is crap; but you like to focus pull anyway. And the stabilization is likely the best around. EDIT: I just got to where you said you're trying to get your hands on a GH-6. That will be a must-see series. Then, the R7. That may be even harder to find right now.
John the AF will surprise him in real world use with native lenses. It is a bulky beast for a M43 camera, but it's 4k 120 is top of the line, and the colors are spot on. He would really enjoy the camera IMO. Also yes, easily the best handheld IBIS available IMO.
@@JohnDrummondPhoto Yes. I have a massive lumix family. So that does put me in fanboy territory... I don't shoot wildlife (except my dog ) so I can't say for sure how it would do. In 60fps the AF in one area plus is pretty solid and fast. 120fps definitely slows the af down some, but the quality is outstanding. The IBIS while panning handheld is by far the best I have seen or used. Also great colors. Dynamic range and noise are it's biggest problems vs Sony and Panny full framers. Has about the same dynamic range as an R6. Only talking about video BTW. Battery life is also not great in 4k 120 or prores modes... Really fun camera. I do think it loses out to the Xh2s, but the lens selection is just so much better for m43.
Of course track birds with a body without bird tracking, didn't give C-AF a try and admits to user error. You hate Olympus at this point so why bother anymore? This is Obviously a Fuji/Sony focused channel nowadays.
I am not truly convinced you know how to use this system. Why are manually focusing when the system can do this using continuous auto tracking in subject mode.
As an olympus user, using the lens unclutched is a lot smoother and I far prefer using it that way. It's not linear then though I think. I find it hard to use the clutch even for photography because the steps are so big I can't actually get accurate focus. It's not too bad to manually focus in video using it unclutched, definitely doable once you get used to it. The clutch is an almost entirely useless feature. I only use it for snapping the focus of the lens to a specific point, like minimum focus if I want to shoot something as close as possible Edit: I think I misunderstood what you were trying to do, having it turn off peaking when not turning the ring could definitely be annoying. I checked the peaking stuff some more it seems like the only way to have peaking show up all the time while recording video is to assign a button to it BUT also turn off peaking assist in the menu. If that's set on it'll turn off peaking every time you stop turning the ring even if you overruled it with the button. When assigned to a button peaking can be turned on and off which seems to have it stay on 100% of the time. It's also possible to maintain peaking with the assist function on by turning the ring extremely slightly continually, though that's probably not a viable solution. It is possible to move the focus ring so gently that it doesn't change focus but still keeps the peaking up though
I finally joined the Sony E-Mount system with the Sony A6100. Had a super tight budget, perfect for a tech channel. The camera as well is hard to get as it's not even avaliable most of the time. At 66990 INR(~850usd) it was better than M6ii(more expensive), Z30 at the same price, XT200, M50(I and II) at cheaper price. XE-4 body only was at first available at the same price as A6100 with kit lens, and it was my perfect choice, but for some reason Fuji increased the body only price by almost 100usd!!! Deal breaker. Setting up the camera, and I'm already satisfied. Super crisp 4k, bullet proof AF, flip screen, clean HDMI out, usb charging. That's all!
Only suckers would buy a Full Frame camera for video. The reach of M4/3 and the affordability of sharp lenses makes it an easy choice. The Sony you have is a terrific choice for studio and interior work.. with its 12mp sensor.

Great video! Thank you! I have to test the 75-300
More than happy with my Olympus gear - enables captures well beyond my capability
I find peaking turning off quickly is good sometimes...but insanely annoying more often then not. Glad you found the peaking on/off button after your rant.
I gave my firmer dslr to one of my of nephews as he was thinking of taking up photography and I wanted him to have something useful to help him discover his favourite focal length and then have an idea of which lenses he liked , match those to s camera system that complimented the lens choice and not box that operates the glass
I would love to be using 5x4 film camera , but looking after the grandchildren so my daughters can pursue their careers, MFT is the way to go I discovered .
Interesting review .
Is Olympus worth buying? After 50 years as a pro. Yes. Love it. EM1 MkIII. Fantastic.
Kasey is the type of guy who complains when the focus throw is short, but is also the type of guy that complains when the focus throw is long
When I quit shooting professionally I’m going back to Olympus. It’s my favorite system for wildlife.
What do you use now professionally?

Your Olympus video footage is the best I have seen you take.
And I have watched all your videos.
If you think Fuji would have produced better video, you need to stay off the Whacky Tabacky.
Why is hd 120 so bad on em1 3. Ive tried everything I can think of, is it any better on the OM1
Your picture taken with an olympus camera would be the character you're looking for.
On a side note, they catch a lot of fish because they regurgitate it to feed their offspring. Nothing more appetising than partially digested swamp fish.
Look at the videos from Espen Halland, Mike Lane, Daniel J Cox and Matthie Gasquet
Arthur Lefo, Brooke Bartleson.
18:23 _That's the only deal breaker;_ *My Brain* 😂😂
I love how you recognize in the end that it is just a button you would have to hold for the peaking. Hahaha
That ending is my experience with Olympus as a novice.
Espen Helland just dropped his third video on his trip to Costa Rica shooting wildlife. He used a 300mm on an old em1 II and the stuff looked great. I'm happy with my Olympus gear and want an OM-5 if they ever make one!
And Mike Lane and Daniel J Cox, both well known Wildlife photographers, just sold Sony Cameras and Lenses (A9 and A1) in favor of the OM-1 +150-400mm.
Bro the GH6 literally takes care of all your "deal breaker" complaints. It deserves a go with you. Think back to the G85 days to warm your heart... then try a new Lumix.

YOU SIR, are a national treasure
The only honest reviewer around. The footage looked good. Would you be more inclined to take it with you than the Sony 600mm bc size and weight?
I simply love the 300mill after carrying my canon ef 500 the oly 300 is like a feather....
Why don’t you have that setup anymore, and what do you have in its place now?
@@johndavid_ Due to personal reasons I had to sell my gear. I also wasn’t a fan of the EVF, hurt my eyes.
@@airmetalmedia ok, thx
So excited for your comments on the GH6 and for my soul to be crushed
The 300mm lens works better if you disable the manual clutch in camera body and then set MF to On in camera then the CAF menu goes to CAF+M, you then have CAF with manual focus over ride, no need to push the focus ring into the manual focus position.
How are you doing this? Not how my Em1 mk2 reacts. In video mode, CAF doesn't have the MF option. Only by switching the clutch can you do manual & auto focus while recording.
Bird footage was nice.
How do you get all this awesome footage of birds eating their prey? Slow Mo looks fantastic. I can't even find squirrels in my neighborhood! Well, my Lumix G95 would never focus on it anyway.
You could make a t-shirt were olympus and pentax are best friends, because they are both not meant for video.
What camera will fix my knee pain
It's not always about results. If you have a Micro Four Thirds system, you know what size you have. It will always be in the back of your mind.
They can't understand why my photos look so good printed either because they just shoot with their stupid iPhones.
bigger than the 300pf + D850 lmao.
Where is the 2x tele converter button on the E-m5 III? I’ve been using the +- button for focus peaking.
Imo swaying is far leas distracting than jerks.
You even see swaying (to a lesser degree) in professional cinematography as a technique of hiding shakes.
I’d like to see GH6 and R7 wildlife if possible.

can you get your hands on the fuji 200mm?
Kasey, I know you probably have considered this but given the shaky aspect, is it possible to add some stability in post with a small crop? Try it out and see if you can correct the wavy, shaky aspects? Give it a go
And the crop will even give him slightly longer reach, he loves that, lol!
Sad to see epic photography lens doesn't cut it for video.

If you do get your hands on the GH6, keep an eye on the bitrate. It's really low above 240 FPS I think.
0:00 I replayed the intro 🤣🤣🤣
Love your stuff man. Breath of fresh air in a world of prima donnas. Sony shooter myself, but that 75/300 rig would make a formidable aviation setup.
Dear Camera Canada. Please send Kasey an a1 so we can see if the 12mp firmware update on the a1 makes it the new night king against the a7siii.
Thanks
That night heron has an extra toe. It looked weird but I didn’t realize it was extra until I saw it’s other talon.
Instead of output blanking you should change the resolution of your project in davinci it looks awkward on RUclips otherwise.
Oh, no, sensor envy...My poor micro sensor. Hey, hold on there, I resemble that remark. :)
Come on, GH5 II, or GH6. dual stabilization, IS lock, ex tele, plus telephoto lens 100-300, or 100-400mm, I think it's gonna be great for wildlife
When you said “full manual mode” the closed captioning said “full mango mode.”
I know you like manual focus but I'd experiment with the subject tracking autofocus with video. Better or worse?
@@jessecumberledge4530 do you own one?
I do think it loses out to the Xh2s, but the lens selection is just so much better for m43.
asign peaking to a button and you are good to go
100-400, is switch off, no jerks :O
Kasey, do the half clutch trick, and your issues will be solved.
Of course track birds with a body without bird tracking, didn't give C-AF a try and admits to user error. You hate Olympus at this point so why bother anymore? This is Obviously a Fuji/Sony focused channel nowadays.
I think you nailed your problem… it’s called video. You should stay with photos. It’s easier
Yes it is.
Olympus T-shirt: "OM-NO.1"... does it mean good or bad? the answer is yes.
I am not truly convinced you know how to use this system. Why are manually focusing when the system can do this using continuous auto tracking in subject mode.
It's not reliable at all and doesn't work above 120fps.
I only use it for snapping the focus of the lens to a specific point, like minimum focus if I want to shoot something as close as possible
Edit: I think I misunderstood what you were trying to do, having it turn off peaking when not turning the ring could definitely be annoying.
Paeking duck, that was a good one lol.
