This week, we're diving into the pitching stats that matter most to college coaches. If you're curious about what numbers really catch a coach's eye, you're in the right place.
Before we jump in, I want to invite you to check out my latest RUclips video or podcast episode where I discuss this topic in more detail. Make sure to subscribe and leave a review-your feedback helps us improve and reach more families like yours!
Key Pitching Stats College Coaches Care About
    Innings Pitched
This is straightforward: more innings pitched indicates durability and trust from your coach. If you're not getting many innings in high school, it might be a red flag for college recruiters.
    Strikeouts
Strikeouts show you have "swing and miss" stuff and good command of your pitches. Aim for more than one strikeout per inning. For Division 1, strive for 1.5 to 2 strikeouts per inning, and for Division 2 and 3, aim for 1 to 1.5.
    Walks
Walks are crucial. Anything more than one walk every two innings is a red flag. For every nine innings, try to keep it to three walks or less. High walk rates in high school usually translate to high walk rates in college, where the competition is tougher and the strike zone is smaller.
    Strike Percentage
This is the percentage of strikes you throw. Aim for 60-70%, with closer to 70% being excellent. Track this stat game by game to see your progress.
    Sample Stat Line
For a solid Division 3 or Division 2 pitcher:
    45 innings pitched
    60 strikeouts
    15 walks
For a standout Division 1 pitcher:
    45 innings pitched
    70 strikeouts
    15 walks
These numbers indicate a pitcher who can consistently compete and keep hitters off balance, which is exactly what college coaches look for.
    Takeaways:
Focus on throwing strikes and commanding all your pitches.
Keep your walk rate low and your strike percentage high.
Monitor your stats and set goals to improve.
I hope this gives you a clearer picture of what to aim for in your pitching stats. Remember, consistency and command are key!
