Felix Salzer’s two volume “Structural Hearing” is a great read if you’re trying to understand motion and direction and form.

Great video! I go very freely on form for most of the time. But also I like to compose very cinematographicaly, the same way I construct the argument of a story, I do for my music.

love the idea of borrowing from cinema/storytelling! This has been a really fruitful area of exploration for me as well

You think modern composers are capable of composing with form? 🤣

Stopped your video as soon as you said that sonata form is a ternary form. It absolutely is not!

I appreciate your feedback! I want to clarify that I said it’s “like a ternary form” and only used the term as a comparison because sonata form typically has three main sections. I didn’t say that is IS a ternary form. Thanks for watching 😊

@@mathewarrellinBut let's call rounded binary, "rounded binary." There are at least three formal functions in sonata form (more if we count the not infrequent intros and codas), but from a structural perspective, it's binary. The recap doesn't do what the 2nd A section in a ternary form does: it's not a literal repeat or usually even very close. I'll shut up now, since no minds are ever changed in the comment section, lol.

@@two2twain thanks for your input! I enjoy the discourse and hope you'll stick around for the later parts of the video which are especially relevant for composers of contemporary music

What’s an example of parametric form? Love this video, very fascinating. Thank you!

I have some in my own music! I'll be sharing some analyses in the future. Thanks for watching!
