We have two wood stoves and dedicate a couple days per year to cutting up fallen trees on our property. We then use a log splitter, and do it together. One loads, one operates the splitter, one stacks. I gather hardwood sticks as fire starters, and use string to make bundles, then later use my pick-up truck to pick them up and keep them in a pile next to the stacked wood. In winter, our mountain gets snow capped, so it’s impossible to find sticks. Wood seems plentiful until it’s gone, every stick matters.

Probably because those trees were young, they get quite large, some were leaning. In that space they would have become a danger to the house. Or they didn't fit in his plans for that space
