It felt like Agatha didn’t have any character development in the movie. I was upset when I found out they deleted Agatha’s “makeover” scene it was so important to her character development. I wish they added that part where Sophie felt betrayed by Agatha, that Agatha was stealing Tedros. Also, Tedros picking Agatha in those little challenges, plus him asking Agatha to the ball. Overall there were just so many good parts the movie never showed. They should have made it a series, there is too much information just for a movie. One more thing maybe controversial but, I wish they didn’t hire someone pretty as Agatha. Agatha was supposed to be ugly but the actor is beautiful. They could have hired someone who didn’t fit the beauty standards. Agatha being deemed “ugly” was a big part of her character.

I completely agree with you! And this definitely needed to be a series to keep all of the important details.

I think that the book was amazing! The whole series is magnificent. Also, I feel like the author develops during the series.

I'm not very satisfied with the movie. School for good and evil is my absolute favorite book. I've read the entire series multiple times before, (the first one about 50 times), and I've never been disappointed in it. My sister and I both were obsessed with the book, and could even recite certain scenes off by heart. When I discovered that the movie was being made, I was so excited. And when the movie was released, of course I watched it the first moment I could. However, as soon as I saw the characters, I became very disappointed.
First of all, please don't take this personally or as offensive, I am not racist whatsoever.
Agatha was black. I'm not blaming the actor btw, I'm just saying it does not feel right. Agatha in the book was described as 'ghostly white skin'. And I know they're trying to be inclusive of all cultures, but really, the main character? I just couldn't get into the movie after that. And it's not just Agatha either, Anadil was described in the book as an ALBINO. If you don't know what an Albino is, it's just someone with extremely pale skin and hair. Again, she was BLACK. This is the case with a lot of other characters, including Rafal.
Second of all, I realized that Sophie and Agatha were very close friends. This just defeats the whole purpose of the first few chapters, as Sophie was supposed to secretly hate Agatha, but just use her as a 'good deed'. This really gives Sophie the 'evil' vibes and hints all along that Sophie was dropped in the right school. Also, in the book, Sophie was really popular and loved and beautiful, but only Agatha was the outcast, because she was supposed to be ugly.
Another thing about the movie that just annoys me, is that they skipped out so much of the book. They should have made it longer, or in two movies, or even in a series. My favorite parts of the book were just skipped out, and I was really disappointed as I was looking forward to watching them. These parts skipped out just didn't give me the same vibes that the book does.
Finally, these things, and along with other reasons, just feel so unsatisfactory and I altogether did not enjoy watching the movie as much as I should have. It's just so frustrating, if I go to a fandom page, or to the comment section, and EVERYONE is talking about the movie. The title 'School for Good and Evil' is no longer the same. It used to be just people talking about the books, and now, suddenly everyone is talking about the movie.
I wish they put a little more thought into making the movie.

Also, I do not mean to offend with the 'black' part. If Agatha was black in the book, but white in the film, I would still complain.

Thanks for commenting! I agree with everything you’ve said. I definitely gave the movie too high of a rating lol. I’m always here for diverse casts, but Agatha’s looks are very important to the character. I would have loved to see her journey of discovering her own beauty. I definitely missed some of the exciting scenes from the book. I really wanted to see Tedros picking Agatha’s pumpkin and some of the other tests. Their friendship was not depicted well. And because they chose to not put in how Sophie was not a true friend, I don’t see how they will continue to have movies when their friendship is the basis of the books’ storylines. I just finished book 3 and they just keep getting better! 📚❤️

I loved the book, when reading it i would vivily imagine how it would play as a movie or series, but watching the movie it hurted me physically. The race swap was ok and the costumes were great, but the characters, both the cange of the character psycology and changing of plots/moving parts of the whole story that what angers me

As someone who loved the books I was really disappointed by how many development and plot points were just scrapped for the movie.
I was hoping since the author was working on it directly it would be good but it it feels like so much was lost. Like losing the kidnapping backstory, the murder which sparked Sophie's decline, Agatha's whole personality change, the dynamic change between Tedros and Agatha... even Tedros's strength was kinda devalued by having that buffed sword idk
Then there's casting choices which I feel like didn't make much sense. Agatha's actress is way too beautiful lol, a HUGE part of her character was supposed to be that she and others thought she was ugly but eventually realizes her own beauty comes from self love. This doesn't really work when your actress could be a model lol
The witch trio was handled pretty thoughtlessly imo, Hester came out of it ok but Anadil and Dot made no sense. The trio would pick on Dot in the beginning because she was bigger than the rest, and that made sense because they're EVIL!!! And I'm pretty sure they matured and got past that eventually but the casting makes that an impossibility and kinda just retcons that entire development because instead they made Anadil the bigger one. They also took away Anadil's albinism which I think is kind of a shame because it was such a primary feature of her in the books. I don't usually care much about raceswaps personally, but it's that in conjunction with the weightswap thing that makes me feel like they didn't really care about the development or future of these characters at all.
I grew up always being bullied for being fat, so Dot's story involving the bullying and self esteem, finding her confidence later, resonated a bit with me. I think that's why it irks me. I feel like they scrapped it all to avoid any possibility of offending anyone but I still can't really agree with it idk
That pretty much sums up my main problem with the movie in general, it just changes WAYYYYYY too much imo and it doesn't make it better. I don't understand why they did it like this, even with time restraints. I wonder how much authority Chainani had over the production, because this kind of reminds me of when Bravely Default 2 came out having erased so many of the loveable features of the first two games in response to criticism but it just became boring. Did he second guess his works or something? If they really want it on screens, I wish they'd start over with a faithful series. I feel like it's kind of a shame this movie is a lot of peoples first intro to the series...

@@smolpeepee245 I agree with all your points. The way they selected certain characters hindered some key elements in the book from being brought into the movie. I’m not even sure where they can go from here if there’s another movie. I’ve read a few more books in the series, and I doubt they will do them justice by making them into movies. Thanks for watching my review! ☺️
