5:15 When Eric talks about teaching birds to play chess and says "I did meet a bird... around 2018" I was like "dang that's higher than my elo!"

For those wondering, the way Zwischenzug is actually pronounced is (Tsvi-Shen-tsug) the i in “tsvi” is like the i in “in”. W makes the V sound in german, and Z makes the sound “ts”, the same sound found in englisch words like “cats”

How times have changed. My first competitive chess was at school in the 1980s. Time limit 28 moves in 55 minutes, then an extra 10 minutes per 7 moves. Occasionally there was a fast tournament. 30 minutes for the whole game.
Now 20 mins per game is considered slow 🙂.
I played maybe 5 competitive games a week. Now you can play twice that in an hour.

I think online play is geared toward faster chess for many reasons. If you play over the board, the default time control by far in my experience is still 90 minutes, plus 30 seconds per move.

To be honest the quality of the game going from 10 to 90 minutes is really quite small at the intermediate level.
