It says in the beginning of the movie that the Kaiju blood is toxic and completely destroys ecosystems. That's why they use blunt trauma against them. They don't use the sword unless as a last choice. They need to take them down spilling as little blood as possible.
And then in the second movie (which isn't even close to as good as the first) the blades they use are superheated to cauterize the wound and stop the bleeding while still severely damaging them
@@SullivanStark-p3b literally the only good writing in uprising. That right there, that’s it. Everything else was “let’s throw a dry ball of toilet paper and see if it sticks.”
It's a great detail that once the scientist drifts with a Kaiju brain the kaijus also learn about humans and their technology because the drift is in both ways. I believe that's why the next kaijus are so good in destroying Jaegers
Not to mention that that explains why they were guarding the Breach, because they know about the plan too. The attention to detail in this film is off the charts.
Fun fact- The adding of a Sword in Gypsy Danger was a new decision and was kept either a secret or not as a very popular side weapon. So when the kaiju leaders learnt about the Jaegers in first drift they didn't knew about the sword and were eventually killed by it. But later in the 2nd battle under ocean they sent a kaiju specifically to attack and rip out Gipsy's arm. But they still didn't knew that Gypsy had sword in both arms so the pilots used it slice up the kaiju into 2 pieces!
There was a point in time where scientists hypothesized that larger dinosaurs actually had two brains, and it gained lots of traction in the paleontological field, but more recently that theory was proven false, so while now we know it wasn’t the case it was indeed a pretty popular theory at the time this movie was made

It takes a lot of mental and physical strength to control one. 17:51 they’re not playing around. They’re flirting. You should be telling them to get a room.
I don't think the drift/mental link is for controlling the Jaeger movements. The drift is just to link his/her brain to the other pilot so that they can coordinate with the Jaeger left and right controls simultaneously as one Brain person. Because the neutral load for a single pilot is too much. They controlled the movements by moving their own hands and legs in same manner in the cockpit as they wanted the Jaeger to do. If they had controlled it with just their brain only then they wouldn't need to move their hands or legs. They could just think in their mind and it will receive the order of action.
About the whole 'everybody's probably dead' thing during the Hong Kong fight: everybody's been evacuated to the Kaiju shelters, so thankfully there's no loss of life. Doesn't change the fact that there's a fair amount of property damage, but that can't really be avoided in this situation.
they explain via the news segment at the start of the movie that kaiju blood is very toxic to the environment so outside of crimson typhoon the other jaegers rely on concussive blunt damage to kill them and if they do use other weapons its flame based or plasma to seal the wounds as it causes them to limit the spread of the monsters blood. usually bladed weapons are a last ditch resort to if we're gonna fail to kill this thing normally its better to kill it and spread the blood rather than die and let it continue doing rampage.

Cherno is probably my favorite Jaeger in the movie. Not only is the design really unique and interesting, but it tells you a lot about the pilots. It's explained in the novelization that Cherno has no escape pods. So when this thing enters the fight, either it wins, or it goes down swinging.
The best explanation I've heard for the sword is that it's a last resort because of kaiju blood being acidic. It's why most of their weaponry is plasma, to cauterize wounds.
The reason the prefer to use blunt force or plasma weaponry to kill the Kaiju is because their blood is toxic. Blunt trauma has less of a chance to cause bleeding, and plasma weapons are hot enough to cauterize any wounds they create, helping to limit excessive bleeding.
Leatherback was on land in an isolated area when it was killed, and Raleigh wanted to avoid making the same mistake he made in the past by assuming it was dead. So he decided to double check. I'd say it was worth being sure that it was dead, especially since the toxic blood can't do as much damage on land if it's cleaned up properly. The main concern regarding the blood is civilian exposure in cities and damage to ecosystems in the oceans.
I keep thinking of how the sparring can determine drift compatibility. Perhaps the better matched they are in skill and technique, the more compatible they are.
I've been holding my breath for this. I live in one of the countries within the pacific rim. Here, the pacific ocean is appreciated for its beauty and resources, but is also feared its ability to fuel super typhoons. 33:16 There actually is a in lore reason most Jeager’s don’t have swords. Kaiju blood (also known as Kaiju Blue) is extremely toxic to organic life. Those who have to clean up after the fights need full hazmat suits to avoid dying. It kills off most organic life in a region, kinda like Godzilla’s radiation in the classic films. Thus, most Jeagers use weaponry that cauterizes or incinerate the wound, like Gypsy’s blade (the upgraded version in Pacific Rim 2) and plasma cannon (both films) - which seal the wound shut in order to avoid spilling Kaiju Blue. The plasma cannon straight up causes it to explode, which is better than having it spill everywhere.
If you watch Cinemawins video on this movie, he explains why the sword is used the least often. Kaiju blood is toxic and contaminates the earth and water. Using the sword causes spray and wide dispersing of it over a city.
