Liu guoliang once said that Ma Lin's play is literally a beast, when winter comes he goes into hibernation mode. He usually does best during summer, probably just until September/October, which is pretty true as he was on top form last summer as well.
Outstanding performance of Skachkov that is getting better and better among with other russian guys. However, Ma Lin seems to have enjoyed a two hour nap right before the match...

@ImprovinMyGame never thought about that, but you are right, if you think about it, russias top team can be amazing in 1-years, especially with their hard backhands right down the line..that really owned ma lin
Recently, Ma Lin's short pushes are poor, as you can see from this match, his short pushes always pop high, create opportunity for the opponent to attack wide down the forehand or backhand.
I think both are the reasons. Ma Lin is getting older and physically unmotivated. And the competitors are more familiar with Ma Lin's playing style after years of competition.

To all right handers : practice backhand looping to a right hander penholder forehand which Ma Lin left open so many times it was ridiculous. Robinot, Skatchkov ... tsktsktsk. Bye bye London?
@padiltimo Ma Lin had a period where he played like in his youth thanks to intensive training. That fire was destined to burn out sooner or later, and now it has. He looks older again, with less agile and flexible movements. He's along with Wang Liqin slowly going to fade away. I project that Ma Long will be the absolute number 1, Jun Mizutani will raise with Zhang Jike, and Wang Hao will be placed strong but not on top. Timo will fall too.
@BennDuong First of all, if everyone showed mercy to each other's weaknesses, then there would be no competition; no challenge; and therefore no improvement. Secondly, Ma Lin's footwork is terrible in this game. I'm sure he was well aware of Skachkov's tactics but since neither of us is Ma Lin, we have no idea what was going on. If it was an injury, then it would be reasonable to not mess around with your opponent out of compassion. This was just an off day for Ma Lin.
@padiltimo Timo Boll's recent loss against Joo pretty much confirms it. He has lost a lot of his sharpness, and agressive will to hit radical winners. Joo is not in top shape either. He seems tired of his game style actually, overcompensating with counters that tend to not work. He will not win against any Chinese players. Ovchtarov on the other hand starts to get even sharper. I think he will step forward too.
ma lin's footwork is now bleh.. i dunno if he's injured or he's just become lazy to move and chase the ball or his speed is just deteriorating game after game.......
well the only things tat keeps ma lin winning with his outdated style is his IQ loll no olympic 2012 single for ma lin loll lov how skachkov stubbornly loops at ma lin's forehandside lol unlike ma long, zhangjike, ma lin got a lot of weaknesses indeed.
