Ruki oh definitely. Especially the 3D ones. I was an animation student a while ago in high school and it’s so much easier to see why something works or fails in 3D when you can see every side of it, as compared to 2D where, when something breaks, it becomes almost unrecognizable. Yet 2D games are much easier to get right so in those it’s easier to see the neat little touches the animators add with the additional time…if the game is done well that is.

Gosh, Celeste in the intro then mentioned nowhere? But its incredible how minimalist its animation is while still conveying so much character and gameplay info! Heck, calling it minimalist might be a misnommer, there was some intense particle work gone in there to really sell the natural flow of the movement in this game. The way Madeline's hair bounces with gravity, or floats when infused with extra power, the squash and stretch on jumping and dashing... So much to love.

    • @W3Rn1ckz
      @W3Rn1ckz 5 лет назад +9

Fun fact: Celeste was originally made for the Pico-8, a quasi-imaginary console with some heavy nes+ type limitations, and most of the animation in the HD version was partially carried over from the Pic-8 version.

I think one of my favourite animations this year was, honestly, the various Pokemon walk/run cycles which were often surprising but never failed to feel perfect for them to me. The bulbasaur line moves in that 'two feet at a time leaps' that frogs tend to move? This simultaneously surprised me but that's basically how a frog moves and upon seeing it _of course_ they'd move like that. So many good choices along those lines there.

Dan, you have to check out The Gardens Between. It's a light puzzle game that has to do with manipulating time where the characters move along a predetermined path, but the player can move them up or down that path at will by progressing or reversing time. But its main selling point is just how gorgeous its animation is. The thing that I imagine would interest you most about this, in particular, is that because the game basically runs "on rails" and the developers don't have to worry about the player, say, interrupting an animation by initiating a walk cycle, The Gardens Between has so much extra space to design custom one-off animations and little character moments, and the game takes full advantage of that fact. If nothing else, it's unique in that regard, and I can only imagine how an actually trained animator would see it.

Like Madelyn’s hair moving in the win and as you jump, or the visible indicator of your dashes with Madelyn’s hair. One of the details I love the most is how Madelyn gasps for air and breathes quickly when she is panicked or tired. I played Iconoclasts without knowing it was solo developed, and I found myself thinking stuff like, "Wow, this game's animation team did a great job on that idle."

I played through Moss and I don’t remember seeing ASL being used. But even still, Quill’s animation is amazing, and she conveys hints very well though charades and pointing. I remember, in the room where you show the clip of her high five the player, laughing out loud at her impression of the solution to the puzzle that I was struggling with, including her impression of one of the enemies you have to manipulate. I also remember, as you can usually comfort her with a pet at any time, batting my hand away when she was really stressed and scared after a horrible plot twist near the end, which made me sad.

Closers Online(which you showed a clip of at 11:27) has animations filled with personality. The way regular combos end if you let go of the attack button and how the characters recover to idle is pretty enjoyable for characters like J(Who does a fighting move pose before going back to idle). Their character is mirrored in their skills. Like a shy character(Levia) will wince and look away meekly while firing a wave of energy while a more confident caster(Seulbi) will look ahead determined.
However, I wouldn't recommend you to play it yourself since it is a Korean MMO and you obviously don't have the time. If you ever wish to get some clips for each character though, I am willing to help.

I know this isn't true for newer content in the game but in my opinion, Jurassic World Evolution had some of the best dinosaur animation in an open world game, even beating out ark. Early on, each dinosaur felt like it had its own movement style and walk cycles. I know they haven't really kept that up in recent months but I still think it deserves recognition

I know it's from 2016 but I just started playing Enter the Gungeon and the animations are charming as heck. The gameplay is tough and I die more than I would like to admit but I still come back for another quick round every now and then because the game puts a smile on my face with its little details like the bobbing hair of the pilot or the derpy animations.

Love the channel! I mentioned this in an earlier video, but I'd like to see your analysis of God Hand's animation. The create-a-combo system is insane enough, but the fact that it all flows together surprisingly well still impresses me. Happy New year!

Only just found this channel and I'm already all in! Good job showing off Bomb Chicken, I haven't played it but the trailer wowed me with its incredible sprite animation.
I think it would be worth checking out WayForward's animation since they usually do a fantastic job at that. Maybe even the first Shantae on GBC, I was always impressed at the amount of character they were able to put in such a tiny sprite.

As somebody new to this channel, I'd like to say 2 things:
    1) It's nice to see somebody who appreciates good animation
    2) Could you look into Warframe's animations? The bow draw animation looks really odd to me, and the fortuna ""We all lift together" cutscene is a spectacle.

I can't believe there was no mention of SRWX here, that game is the king of animations and easily just the best game this year. Every single animation from the Xelguard, especially the Soaring Twin Wings attack is pure eyegasm. How could it not even get a mention here?

You know what might make a good episode? How Return of the Obra Dinn does scene composition. Every memory gives 1 snapshot to give you as much information as possible. There's no animation so they have to do it all through the scene lay out and the blocking to properly convey, not only what is happening, but the whole story of the ship.

If you do an episode on Arc Sys, make sure you check out their GDC talk on how they did XRD. It's incredible; they lit animations different on a per character and sometimes per frame basis. It's cel shading on steroids.

You've quickly become one of my favourite RUclipsrs, Dan! Whenever somebody would narrate anything about games, I always missed the aspect of animation. Well, now we got our personal expert in here! Many best wishes for the upcoming new year! Cheers! =)
Would love you to someday take up mid-vintage RPGs (Lion King, Aladdin, Prince of Persia, Dangerous Dave, etc) and probably an evolution of certain series in terms of animation (Tomb Raider, LOZ, MGS, GTA, AC, JC) (although you've covered some aspects in fragmented manner, their evolution over time would be fun to analyse).

My top pick would have been Soul Calibur VI, mostly due to the character creation. The fact that a tiny little girl with Nightmare's moveset or a naked skeleton with Ivy's moveset look really good is just crazy. Also, kudos for making fighting game-appropriate versions of The Witcher 3 and NieR: Automata's animations for the guest characters

I think you might enjoy Semblance. It's a puzzle platformer where the puzzles are built around deforming the platforms themselves as well as your character. Naturally, the game is like... 90% squash and stretch but the devs get a ton of appeal out of it!
