Farout man...that took me back. Lived at Kirra right through the 80s. So many epic days, mostly courtesy of cyclones. Abigail in early 82 stands out. Not necessarily for her size, but she hovered at around the optimum 500ks off shore and barely moved for damn near 3 weeks. Although not big, because of her stability and longevity the sand coming off big groyne and down through the point was groomed to perfection. This is all before the superbank and in 87 the GDC stuffed the entire cyclone season at Kirra by bringing in a barge which sat offshore and dredged sand and pumped in close to the shoreline. The first cyclone washed it all out which created a massive very shallow straight sandbank about 200 metres offshore which took all the energy out of any swell before it hit the point. the following summer the GDC got the same barge back to dredge sand from way offshore and this time pumped it onto the actual beach. Again the first couple of cyclones in early 88 were non-events wave wise but the helped siphon some of the sand off the beach. Early March 88 Cyclone Bola rocked in and produced the most epic couple of days of pumping Kirra I'd ever experienced. Some days throughout your surfing life are so perfect they are forever etched into your memory banks. March 8, 1988 was one of those days. It was a Monday and big, thick, perfect barrels freight-trained off big groyne and down the point all day. There was no way in hell I was going to work...and gorged myself on perfection for the next three days. Back to work on Thursday and was fired on the spot hahahaha...but soooo worth it.
Hahaha, Brought back a memory. 29th Oct 89, got sacked, went surfing, got the best 8ft barrels ( apart from Sumbawa ) You do remember certain dates & swells. Cheers Brother Pit Master 🙏 😂
Not click bait. Dig that! Good Kirra Ty. I watched a couple of times just because of the footage. My break is such a short big ride...fun seeing these long makable sick rides. Envious!
Where the frkn jet ski come from? Better yet, where did it go?!!!! Some grande hue is required to do in that shallow water with pumping waves!!! Aye Carumba!!!
I agree with C P, I grew up here, this is the exception to the rule! It is normally pretty good hum. While I have developed my back handed skills here (I'm a goof), I surf mostly D'bah now, as the superbank only pump's when it er, um, pump's! I've had better waves at Maroubra in Sydney. And don't underestimate Macca's (Mackenzie's bay to south Bronte on a solid swell! Fuck the gold coast! And I live here. 20 days a year if ya lucky.
WHY is it even with big swells that the east and north east coast waves are weak and powerless compared to Southern coastal breaks reef point sand and Bommies W.A. S.A. VIC & TAS , is it because cold water swells move faster? We see for sure that they are thicker down here and doesn't need warm to hot water cyclone to create our powerful slabs of swell coming in sets of 3 to 6 typically, but generally 4, with the 1st being smallest 4th the biggest but a 6 wave sets are all over the shop, 1st wave can be the biggest, Dose anyone know why these things are so? I 1st became aware of this as a kid with mates from QLD coming down here and commenting on how much punch even a 4 foot swell has here and 6 to 8 foot was like paddling in front of a train
The length of the fetch can be much longer down south, and the longer the fetch the more power builds. In SE QLD we get some big south swells that have a long fetch from a long way down the bottom of the Tasman, mainly in Autumn and Winter. They come in with twice as much power as other swells. Very few spots in SE QLD can capitalise on these solid south swells, but if you know, you know! One spot in particular is a South swell magnet, and 6-8ft is absolute carnage, world class beachie bombs.
Really nice waves would love to have been there BUT! somebody please fix the shit awful music i think it gave me arse cancer its so and certainly made me want to cut out my eardrums
Great footage - but what's with the music? It kills the vibe. I wish surf video uploaders will stop doing this and just leave the sound of the ocean, wind and crashing waves.
The music is way too distracting... so much better with the v way down or off. Music far deeper and sophisticated my suggestion... Mother Nature clearly is that! 🦉

Dreadful

The east coast surfers are in a bubble. While these are great waves, it's just an average regular good day for Western Australia.
wyd, im in Perth and its dead flat most days :(
They call that 4ft on the Goldy :-)
Just make sure you have a shark shield...
Agreed. Pacific-indian Ocean vibe the best. Whoooooo!!!!!!! Fog it inside wombs always. Alomahalo. Jimbokimo.
Not if you live in Perth, no waves here, it's shite.
Yewww these vids are mental

99% of these waves were not Superbank.
Agree lots of big groyne Kirra mostly
Nope, no barrel dodgers here!
Music ruined the first half for me. Sad because the surf was incredible.
