Awesome info Joe, much appreciated! I actually have some Totara growing specifically to get rid of the blackberry on my land, coincidentally ;)
What was the plant with the tri-lobed leaves called, though? The non-native; I couldn't quite make out the name and the captions just called it a 'tree looser' :p I could REALLY benefit from some fast growers that won't mess up the regeneration (and hopefully wont annoy the neighbouring farms too much, with the seeds :p ).

Can I suggest you continue growing the Totara as shown in my video Kanuka is another excellent native to plant in the black berry. What ever you decide to plant It is important to keep the area around your tree clear of suppressive weeds. until your tree has established it's self. By all means plant some Tree Lucerne go on line to enquire and read about Tree Lucerne.

@@thenewforestjoefleet Absolutely, as soon as you mentioned the Totara, my ears perked up! I've already got plenty of Kanuka around though, trying to plant it in places where the seeds can spread the most as its making a great early coloniser, and it grows FAST!
Cheers for the name of the tree lucerne, I'll definitely be getting some seeds! Anything to slow down the blackberry and barberry!
