OMG, this was outstanding. I've never heard Kim Newman speak, and he is absolutely delightful. Being able to watch the two of you Gothic Lit experts in conversation was WONDERFUL. Thanks for this!

Newman is always incisive and articulate, always worth listening to his interviews. I met him a couple of times (we used to go to the same bookshops), and a long time ago he responded to the fan letter I sent after first reading 'Anno Dracula' with a print-out of his latest Anno Dracula short story, months before it was actually published..! Nice man.

I was first introduced to Kim in several horror film documentaries and he was always one of the highlights. His soundbites were usually hysterical.

Excellent! Maven, you are a fantastic interviewer. (and a very dark horse for keeping quiet about this in the last livestream). That was a very enjoyable 56 minutes and I know I'll listen to this interview again in the future.

This was awesome. You get the best people to interview they always seem so honest and happy to be there. Would I write a book with vampires just to maybe be interviewed by Elisa? No.... But it wouldn't hurt.

It looks like it, right?? I actually happened to get it right around the time when I did my video on Dark Shadows several years ago, and it felt like kismet. I've kept it ever since.

I've not read his books but known about Newman for a long time as here in the UK his critique is very well known, especially when it comes to the world of the fantastique. I love hearing what he has to say about classic Doctor Who.

it's a fascinating fictional universe. i'm a fan of particularly the first couple of books. however, starting with "johnny alucard" it seemed to me that the series lost the energy that it had earlier: each segment of "johhny alucard"deserved a novel of it's own, per each decade that it's set in, some of the internal lore is cobtradictory (such as shape-shifting) and the volume set in 1896, after dracula was deposed, still has him on the throne... my belief was that some canonic lore would be observed, with references to the characters and concepts that made each decade from 1885 to 2000 famous, but the canon is not thus observed for some reason.

I enjoyed his book Anno Dracula (and other works) being of the same age and picked up all the cultural references only a viewer of 60s/70s British TV would recognise, e.g. Adam Adamant, Raffles, Sexton Blake. Late Victorian era/Edwardian decade were rich in fantasy & adventure epics, which explains why Walt Disney was obsessed with England and it shows in his feature-length cartoons & live action epics. KN pours forth here, a challenge for interviewers unless they share in the genre.

I like how authors use Vampires as discussion pieces for certain topics. For me, I always wanted to write a vampire novel but didn't know how to approach it until an idea popped into my head out of the blue. Now I am committed to making a piece of Vampire fiction where I am writing as disturbing, dark, and terrifying as can be because I want to write a Vampire story that will scare me as an adult. The more I write the darker, the eviler, and more disturbing the Vampires that I'm writing become.

I kept wondering where I knew this author, and I finally figured it out. He wrote The McCarthy Witch Hunt. That’s a short story where Samantha is actually being investigated for witchcraft.

As an aside, Patton Oswalt's origin story is that he saw Nosferatu as a very small child and wanted to have that impact from the other side of the moving image.

If vampires are killing people to live, it seems like it WOULD be ok to kill them. Also, Dracula did seem to lose his soul, as well as Lucy when she turned. They clearly did lose their moral capacity, but not their intellect. Thats why Dracula was such a threat.
