In all my years of band from middle school to now I have never witnessed a percussion section evolve and stay consistently relevant year after year after year. Norfolk State puts out professional percussionists. Kudos to Mr B the Percussion Coordinators and Staff for pushing the bar even higher. BEHOLD ✊🏾💚💛💚❤️❤️❤️
@@ChefDonnyH Yeah bro I think at this point Mr. Orey is good on having us perform there. When I marched at Cookman he would be gone for a few days to attend PASIC, you know for professional development purposes and then return and start working on the feature for the Florida Classic. If we did go, we’d put some beats down for sure. But I give honor where honor is due….MDFS got it.
Seeing this after being an MD fan through RUclips videos for 17 years now THIS really brings tears to my eyes. The evolution of this section during even the last 7 to 8 years has been HUGE! No matter what, MDF$ sticks to the tradition of excellence and to see you all FINALLY invited to PASIC puts the cherry on top!! I am proud of you all!! The media team has stepped it up this year and did a great job on the presentation of this video and all of the others this season! Continue to be great!!
Love the history lesson of MD. When they transitioned to tonals it was a mostly freshman section that had to learn pretty much all new parts. Kudos to my rookie bros.

Congratulations to Norfolk State and Million Dollar Funk Squad for putting on an amazing exhibition performance. I'm so glad that this drum line is getting the exposure that they deserve. As with any practice, there is always room for improvement. I play trombone but I am a huge fan of percussion. I am very familiar with the million dollar funk squad so I had very high expectations prior to watching this performance. This performance left me wanting more. This drum line performs at an higher level when in battle mode compared to exhibition mode. Had a another drum line been standing in front of them, we would've witnessed another version of the MDF$, in my opinion. I felt they were on cruise control for lack of better terms. Let A&T's Cold Steel, or V State Drum Phi, or Hampton's Sticky Situation been standing in front of them, then we would've seen the REAL MDF$.. Overall good show, I would give it an honest B.. this wasnt their full potential .. they was on egg shells.. the drums look good but they have higher quality drums in their arsenal, but the all white drums they played on about 12 years ago are the best sounding in my opinion. The material was great but I've heard better rhythmic expressions performed in band tunes like Love is the greatest story (new jack swing) and the original behold, the school's fanfare.. i love the retrogression that this drum line demonstrates.. they make music go forward and backwards simultaneously
Those green hoops/rims on the basses look amazing 😭😭 My kids have the exact same drums (dynasty sparkle green that fades to black) and i had no idea green hoops was even an option, now I'm punching air 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
1. HBCU drumlines don't try to fit too many notes in per measure. This leaves room for their cadences to "breath" and what makes them funky. 2. MD Funk Squad's has the freshest cymbals I've seen in 30 years. 3. This drumline sounds great, but the visuals are just as stunning. 4. I think the cadence at 18:40 originated from the Rat Patrol at Tennessee State University, but they call it German Boy or Drummer Boy. Southern also plays the same cadence. It might have been originally written by Johnny Lee Lane, but I'm not sure.
Hmm I can't stand CS and Mdfs going up against eachother. Everytime one is about show and the other is skill and technique. Two different styles. Im biased tho😂. mdfs all day

What year did they transition over to tonals??? @liquidlightz
@@juansingleton4031 1985 is when we went full tonal. I think we held onto at least one or two leg tenor drums that year but by 86 they were gone.
@@liquidlightz WOW I was born in 84 lmao
I'm glad they didn't let tradition hold them back. Ronald just adds a layer of sophistication.
Much love MDFS, Great job!

i did not know NSU brought back their leg tenors!!!!! Glad to see them back after all these years :)
Seeing the leg tenors was just a "history" lesson 😊.

That was just a song they play within the band. It wasn’t a regular cadence.
Anyone notice the ceiling?
Would’ve been dope if them and cs planned a battle since they were only 2 minutes away from each other 😭
They really didn't even have time for that.
