For testing suspected clogged exhaust. I drill 1/8" holes before and/or after cats because they're convenient to seal back with 1/8" alum rivets. Stick a piece of 1/8" O.D. pipe into hole and slip hose with gauge over pipe. Its amazing at how much better the engine runs (almost normal) with just a 1/8" hole in exhaust before even gauging pressures. As Eric O says, removing old sensors like those is always a disaster/massacre, otherwise the adapter shown looks sweet. Thanks for showing
it's an older dodge 5.9....... sensor/wire issues guarantee 100% plugged cat :)) sawzall and test with exhaust cut off, hardly running fix solved, now fix the multiple sensor/wire failures ;)
That is the best tip on back pressure testing I ever seen. I always burn my fingers holding the hose on the pipe..Lol Don't waste your money on the O2 adapter from snap on. I finally gave up and ignored the 5.0v pid reading for the other upstream O2 sensor. My verus never asked if it was fed or cali. I need to invest in more scan tools Thanks Man
Although this one was a clogged converter, I worked on many of the 5.9 like this in the Ram vans and they also had a problem of fuel pumps going bad but not failing totally, just the output would go down gradually over time. It feels like a cat starting to clog. My seat of the pants told me the engine was starving for fuel though and proved it by mounting a fuel pressure gauge on a hose to a fuel connection under the hood and watch the gauge held under the wiper arm. I could see under heavy throttle in 2nd and 3rd that the fuel pres would drop lower and lower in relation with the engine bogging down. The engine just felt like it was 'laying down', short on power compared to what it had before, and what the other good vans in the fleet had. Thankfully the vans were still driveable and I had the users run the tanks down because on these extended vans the tanks were like 30 gals. Not fun draining to reach the fuel pump.
Those trucks had converter issues from almost new. If they didn't plug up they rattled. I worked at a Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealer during that time frame and replaced many converters. Even the converter on my personal truck was rattling and was replaced on Chrysler's dime as well the intake gasket also leaked. As soon as you started it and revved it up I had a flashback to my tech days.

You can measure temperature in front and back of the cat, if the difference is high that’s an easy way to 100% verify plugged in a couple seconds… wherever the restriction is where you see a big temperature spike… I want to say a 100 degree temperature delta says plugged but check me on that number, anyway a temp gun is pretty dang accurate…

G'day, Mr. O! Thumps up! I agree, pretty sweet trick with the brake lines!! But, I still can't figure out, how you know... "Bob's my uncle!?!" 😉 Great video! Cheers! 😊✌🏼🛠❤️ P.S. "Bob's your uncle" is a great way of saying "you're all set" or "you've got it made." It's a catch phrase dating back to 1887, when British Prime Minister Robert Cecil. (a.k.a. Lord Salisbury) Decided to appoint a certain Arthur Balfour to the prestigious, and sensitive post of Chief Secretary for Ireland. Not lost on the British public was the fact that 'Lord Salisbury' just happened to be better known to Arthur Balfour as "Uncle Bob." ✌🏼
I just picked up a 1998 that had the same issue. Unfortunately, there was a dead battery, no codes, no historical either. This one wouldn't even stay running long enough (lucky to get 5 seconds of really rough running) to throw a code or get any good sensor data. I ended up going through the gambit of testing fuel pressure, timing, etc and finally stopped to think, "is it even possible the catalytic convertor is so plugged that the truck won't even run at all?". I removed the front O2 sensor to give it some literal breathing room and it fired right up. Sure wish I would have remembered this video before I started on it.
I'm a little puzzled as to why it runs rich with a clogged cat.... Does backpressure reduce the fresh air the cylinders can draw in, leading to reduced manifold vacuum which is read by the MAP sensor and interpreted by the computer as a situation that needs more fuel? Is that a consistent finding with clogged cat in these old MAP engines? Or, was there another problem going on with an O2 sensor that confused the issue? Brilliant video, Eric. I love it when you do videos on trucks similar to mine, ha ha.
spelunkerd. I'm just a DIY'er but here's my take on this. I believe that on map engines, when the map detects lower vacuum, it assumes greater airflow and increases fuel. Then the O2 sensors detect a rich condition and then scale back the fuel. Hence the RICH trim values. I've read this about EGR before but I think it's the same animal. Some one will correct me soon.
Oh yeah, been there, done that. Remember the Honda CVCC models?? The NO cat models available when most everyone else had gone to catalytic converters. Once could use the still available cheaper leaded gas. How they did this. On the CVCC models, a new style cast iron exh. manifold had a stainless steel plate welded inside the manifold. Idea was the SS plate would heat up and burn off any unburnt fuel and still meet Fed. standards for emissions. Worked well...for a while. Most experienced welders will tell you, stainless and cast iron is a poor combination. With time, a fair number of the Hondas the SS plate welds would break, dislodging the SS plate clogging the exhaust. Along with a recognizable dull roar from the exhaust system under full throttle. With this the only model available in Calif., we did a number of these, all under warranty. Along with this was the head gasket campaign for the iron block CVCC models. If there was the slightest evidence of head gasket coolant seepage into the cylinders, customers got new 0.010 oversized pistons, rings, bearings and engine reseal. A complete engine refresh even out of warranty mileage.
I have an 07 dodge charger rt radiator cracked ... replaced the radiator went to turn it over and it putted like it was gonna die .. it idles rough and eventually dies I haven't driven it cuz it's still up on Jack stands so I replaced crank sensor and had a code for knock so replaced that.. as well I had a p0300 code for random misfire so I replaced all 16 spark plugs check engine went away for a few minutes.. car is still doing the same thing except now I have a blinking check engine light and it smells like it's burning rich I'm told... cannot pull codes with blinking check engine light.. no smoke from anywhere fluids look good not mixed... it's got 113500 miles any ideas

Great video! Tried looking everywhere online for that Snap-on S6149 O2 sensor adapter (or even a similar product with a hose connection) and was completely unable to find one that was available or not included within some kit. Any ideas?
Thanks eric,i just did the hole drilling on my exhaust,it runs so much better now and my milage is WAY UP>next paycheck i'll maybe look into getting a cat.ha ha
I got burned on a ford escort in my early early years. Coughing out the carb. Ran through timing so many times. Just to find out.. plugged cat. Nice trick with brake hose.
Well the "if I can do it, you can do it" is a bit of a stretch. because most many people can't put air in their tires these days. 😂😂 But good thorough video. I got a 98 Ram 5.9 4x4, remanufacturered engine 6 years and 30K miles ago, rebuilt tranny and "onced overed" everything bumper to bumper over the years. But it is experiencing a down on power issue, gun the acceleration and Nadda damn thing happens except Turtle Power!!! 🐢 It will move you along if you are OK just going slow af but It just bogs if you need to get up and Go!! no glow cherry converter, which is t 4ish years old, does seem to hear alot of wispy Air sound out the leaky exhaust shorty header and flange Hood area....what a fkn pos. And thats coming from a Mopar man. I wished it had a freaking Carburetor and a Hollow cat or str8 pipe. I'm in Ohio so those things are certainly a possibility
Literally same here. I’ve been at war with my 5.9 for just a couple weeks now, but I’m starting to worry about her.... what all have you done to yours?
@@justisyoung2799 Other than that I've replaced, the three sensors on the carburetor which are the map sensor, the throttle positioning sensor and the idle air control sensor, and Ive had the transmission overhauled thinking it wasn't getting power from slipping out of gear but that turned out to not be the problem. Going to replace the fuel pump and fuel filter next to see if that's the issue.
@@marksusername wow. talk about firing the parts cannon. So what was the problem? Get yourself a BlueDriver obd2 module so you can view live data on your smartphone. You can read values of everything you replaced, not sure about being able to view IAC info though. Aside from needing a fuel pressure tester to test pressure and flow, generally you can pinpoint the issue once you see live data... like misfire counts from bad distributor cap/rotor, crank position sensor, etc. Could have bought a bona fide $1-2k scan tool for the parts you replaced. No shame in getting a professional mechanic diagnose, I had to do that once in 97, my car stumped the dealership too.
Give it a couple toots of the GOOD STUFF in the intake and ship it. It's a 1999 dodge in New York, it's gonna rust apart at the seams before the guys check clears.

I had 3 Dodge Rams first one had V=10, spent so much time at dealers for repairs. They dented the tail gate then tried to hide it. Next Ram right at 508 miles after filling up the tank, engine let go. After a month of time dealer to decide what to do called to pick out another truck. That truck ended up with all bolts in front end loose. Back to Chevy!
@@ramtrucks721 I had to put a crate motor in my wifes Mercury Mountianeer, after having to reverse engineer the thing so I could pull the old motor I decided there will never be another Ford parked in my drive. My lil 98 Ram 1500 with the 5.2, (318) is pushing close to 200K, had to replace the TPS 2 days ago, not bad. I like my dodges. Had a 95 with the cummins 12 valve, sold it when I got the 98. The diesel was pushing 400K and ran like a new one, however, the body metal was getting in bad shape, (cracking and rattling), should have found another body but the deal on the 98 was too good to pass up. Thought about putting the cummins in it but the 1500 would never hold up under the weight of the diesel. Just learned my lesson on Fords, told the wife 'you find an SUV you like and I'll buy it, she wanted the Mercury. I think now she would rather have a Tahoe, LOL. hi there eric I have that same truck with the same motor all stock with 212k miles on it and I still have the original cat still on it got it inspected last year and the numbers on the test came back all zeros does that mean my engine is burning super clean or I just take that good care of it what do you think

Hey South Main, quick question. My truck is having a rather strange problem. It stalls and dies completely while I'm driving, and the fuel system relay gets so hot to the point where it deforms the relay and also melts the location around the pins. I was thinking crank position sensor or fuel pump, but I could be wrong. It seems to be a short in the system somewhere, it's my only vehicle and I desperately need your help! Thank you, The Joker.
Another example showing experience counts. Geez, diagnosed in the cab. One question though - if cat is replaced, wouldn't it happen again without fixing the cause?
I did this on a customers Focus one time. They towed it in cause it would barely move. It had a P0420. I grabbed a drill and drilled a hole before the cat. Should have seen the look on there face when I drove it out of the bay 10 mins after towing it in.
Antonio Michael depended on the vehicle weight (concerning light duty and medium duty trucks) in those days...nowadays pretty much everything is californistan emissions
thefordmaniac I wasnt talking about now days the video was about a 90s truck and not every vehicle made now days is California emissions certified if its bought in California or transferred to California yes it will be California emission vehicle but vehicle made in other states are not set for California emissions and I was talking about federal emission vehicles 99 percent of them only come with 2 o2 sensors

Would be a big no no here in Europe too lol we have very strict emissions laws too.
I was a real need trick checking the back pressure. Thank you
That Grandma trick is sweet I hope you get the job. Most likely he isn't going to fix that old dog just going to put her down.
MORE "old school" tips and tricks, please!!!
the brake line trick --- "now there's using your head for something more than a hat rack" lol
Sounds like your grandma is a very smart lady!
Good question, got me thinking too and I’m in the process of dealing with this atm, but how much do you know about the plenum gasket?
Ah, the old key trick to find out DTCs. I like it.
That's a handy trick to know
I have an 07 dodge charger rt radiator cracked ... replaced the radiator went to turn it over and it putted like it was gonna die .. it idles rough and eventually dies I haven't driven it cuz it's still up on Jack stands so I replaced crank sensor and had a code for knock so replaced that.. as well I had a p0300 code for random misfire so I replaced all 16 spark plugs check engine went away for a few minutes.. car is still doing the same thing except now I have a blinking check engine light and it smells like it's burning rich I'm told... cannot pull codes with blinking check engine light.. no smoke from anywhere fluids look good not mixed... it's got 113500 miles any ideas
@South Main Auto Repair LLC
so glad i watched this video i was gonna change my transmission i heard a pop and my truck runs and sounds like shit well sounds like this dodge really and yes i have the same truck same engine and all i think burning oil like it does at about 3 quarts for a 100 mile trip did the cat in thanks man i think this video just saved me thousands
I wonder why my Grandma never taught me the exhaust backpressure trick? Hmmm?
cause she doesn't like old trucks. My mother always rides in the co-pilot seat-just like the years with dad.;) The wife-in the back.
Dirtyharry your right. My grandma prefers her Toyota Carolla. Maybe Eric's Grandmom just likes him better than my grandmom likes me. He is very cute and cuddly and I'm not. Don't tell him I said that because he will get a big ego trip and then I'll feel even worse.
😂
Ozzstar because they didn't start using catalytic converters until 1975
Its cause Grandma Drove an 1970's Hemi car, and that thing had no Cat's :D. it did have Two four barrels though :)
Great video! Tried looking everywhere online for that Snap-on S6149 O2 sensor adapter (or even a similar product with a hose connection) and was completely unable to find one that was available or not included within some kit. Any ideas?
Props to You Grandma and uncle Bob! subbed
You should make a list of Grandmas tips and tricks.
I agree 100% about a Grandmas tips and tricks list to trouble shoot your ride
If you wrote them all down it would be a book instead of a list, lol
I used to drill holes in my exhaust to make it louder when I was a dumb kid and didn't know any better.
Grand MA was a very wise woman she was. She learned you many things she did.
But good thorough video. 🐢 It will move you along if you are OK just going slow af but
It just bogs if you need to get up and Go!! no glow cherry converter, which is t 4ish years old, does seem to hear alot of wispy Air sound out the leaky exhaust shorty header and flange Hood area....what a fkn pos. And thats coming from a Mopar man. I wished it had a freaking Carburetor and a Hollow cat or str8 pipe. I'm in Ohio so those things are certainly a possibility
What if I'm still having this same problem after replacing the catalytic converter and both o2 sensors?
The good stuff spray foam insulation??
That was a great tip. Thank your grandma for me
Ha man great video, big hello to you, Vanessa and the chillens from Bundaberg,Queensland,AUSTRALIA .The home of the famous Bundaberg Rum and sugar cane country. My wife Allison loves all you video's on all your channels as much as I do keep them coming.Kind Regards Warren.S.
A Patriots fan.. there's your problem lady..
😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😲🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Now, that's a diagnosis. Electronic, confirmed by actual pressure testing, instead of just a visual.
Nice looking little building ya got there. Seems like a cool place to live.
Thanks for the great work you do my friend
I had 3 Dodge Rams first one had V=10, spent so much time at dealers for repairs. They dented the tail gate then tried to hide it. Next Ram right at 508 miles after filling up the tank, engine let go. After a month of time dealer to decide what to do called to pick out another truck. That truck ended up with all bolts in front end loose. Back to Chevy!
Best place for a Dodge? The Service Garage.
Tradeking Distributing
Stfu idiot....Furds yes Dodge no
What are you? Like 12 years old?
Dave's one heck of a true machanic, love the way he systemically proves the fault.
You should call you channel South Main Automotive University, I have been learning a lot after I subscribed to your channel.
Your Grandma was one hell of a mechanic, wasn't she? 😀
Wait did you just cycle the key 3 times to read codes in IPC? How did i not know that
Don't gut the cat, gut the EPA
Thanks for the vid Eric. Hope you got the job.
Good Hunch, looks like it "the cat" was toast quite a few years ago
hi there eric I have that same truck with the same motor all stock with 212k miles on it and I still have the original cat still on it got it inspected last year and the numbers on the test came back all zeros does that mean my engine is burning super clean or I just take that good care of it what do you think
Bob is always my uncle... because I have an uncle named Bob. 😉
I had TWO of 'em!
Hope you get the job, that is if you really want it. Thanks for the video.
I have a '99 and a few months ago my catalytic Exploded, with the large can it has 2 separate sections from what ive seen online, mine was missing over a 3/4th of the front half of the can i don't know where it went, it juat disappeared and clogged my exhaust
..."I'll start it, you guys watch it"....
Ok!
Yeah, the first time I heard it...plugged exhaust/cat...finish watching !!
Thank you,
The Joker.
Hey you, yes you. I need you to take our quick one question survey.
Another example showing experience counts. Geez, diagnosed in the cab. One question though - if cat is replaced, wouldn't it happen again without fixing the cause?
.... unfortunately, CYA is the only option these days Eric... trick diagnostics though. Hope ya get the nod for the job... & Thanks for the video ;)
I had the same truck. Been there done that. I jus cut the conveter open and gutted it. It was like I put a 440 in it.
Half-assed Garage great username!
Thermal camera works great for this 👍🏻
I did this on a customers Focus one time. They towed it in cause it would barely move. It had a P0420. I grabbed a drill and drilled a hole before the cat. Should have seen the look on there face when I drove it out of the bay 10 mins after towing it in.
Good one, a quickie, thanks Eric O!
Federal usually only has 2 o2 sensors on most vehicles
Antonio Michael depended on the vehicle weight (concerning light duty and medium duty trucks) in those days...nowadays pretty much everything is californistan emissions
thefordmaniac I wasnt talking about now days the video was about a 90s truck and not every vehicle made now days is California emissions certified if its bought in California or transferred to California yes it will be California emission vehicle but vehicle made in other states are not set for California emissions and I was talking about federal emission vehicles 99 percent of them only come with 2 o2 sensors
Been years since I've seen an ashtray actually full of cigarettes and ashes.....
It brings back a lot of bad memories.
