Nottingham Forest's Incredible Season and Revolution Under Steve Cooper

  • A quick history of how Steve Cooper came into when Nottingham Forest were from bottom of Championship with only 1 point in 7 game and led them all the way to promotion and back to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years. An astonishing feat to turn things around in only 8 months both in results but also in the culture and feel in the club too.

      Funnily enough I do want to do a video focusing on Steve Cooper. I have to finally finish an England related one first. I have been working on for ages so need to do it first but want to do the Cooper one next. It will take a while as it be, well, very heavily researched lol

      @@jamieallan7641 We will have to wait and see. At the moment it is turning into the most complicated thing I have ever put together. I want to do a full chorological comparison of Cooper's blueprint to the original and his involvement to the original. I think it will work out but I think I won't be done until mid-July. I am working my way through hundreds of interviews looking for the relevant quotes I need

      I finally finished this video. Don't ask how long it took to put this all together! And I am sorry it is so long.
      As I said It is a long video but I really want to show the blueprint that Cooper is copying at Forest. I particularly wanted to show his involvement in its development; how closely it mirrors the original; and how an understanding of the original can provide a better understanding of how things now work at Forest.

    @jamesm5497 2 года назад +105

    At various points throughout this season after he left I've thought to myself "I wonder what Chris Hughton is thinking?" To come out and say in an interview that we don't have the players to play a different system and then cooper comes in and averages 2 points per game and nearly 2 goals a game and have a better defensive record. Just unbelievable.

    • @carlybishop6160
      @carlybishop6160  2 года назад +12

      I also have wondered that. I really don't think it has helped his future prospects, though. It is one thing to say you struggled at a club and you weren't a good fit for the club, but to make those sorts of comments and then be proven wrong, makes it really look like you were the problem.
      Although on that note, I think there is a quote from Cooper in 2017 which sums up this transition from Houghton to Cooper: "The days are gone, for me, where everything is the coach telling the player, that's finished". Because, as much as anything, I think Houghton was a typical example of an old-school-style of Manager which is dying out and everyone is moving on from. With that Houghton's comments are almost examples of not recognising that change around the sport and not adapting to it.
      [And the 2017 Technical Report which that quote comes from illustrates that perfectly too. He is literally preaching from the new Gospel and basis of the entire blueprint he is replicating to the smallest detail. Curious to see how he replicates the next steps too]

      What is mad is that Cooper lost 6 games in 38, Hughton managed to lost that many in 7... it really is remarkable.
      I will say one thing though, something that is often overlooked. Cooper managed us for 38 league games, Hughton for 7; the 1 game that is missing? Huddersfield away when Steven Reid managed us. He reverted to three at the back that day and that was the blueprint to our success last season. Cooper may have done that anyway but honestly that system change from Steven Reid deserves huge props imo as a springboard in pushing us forward

    I’m from Canada but my dad was born and raised in Nottingham. Despite our distance over the ocean, he instilled in me a burning love for Nottingham Forest, and since at least 1996 (I was 16, Euro96 just happened, coupled with a visit that summer to family in England, all turned me forever towards football as the most beloved of sports)and I’ve been a Forest fan over here in Canada since at least then.
    After which I always promoted and rep’d Forest, every chance I got. I never stopped loving NFFC. People in Canada who only knew Liverpool, Man U and Arsenal all laughed at me for supporting “nobodies”, (of course not knowing about 79 and 80) but I never ever gave up on them.
    I remember the calamity exit from the Premiership, I remember the Billie Davies days and Earnshaw coming so close in 2010/11? I remember the dismal years following that..
    And then this season…. the whistle finally blew in Wembley, at 96 minutes, and I wept for joy. All the way over here in Canada I cried when Forest finally earned their promotion after 23 years.

      I’ve been a Forest supporter since 2007 in the US. Researched the club and realized how special it is. So glad I decided to support them.
      That wasn’t the most glamorous time to love Nottingham Forest in the eyes of many, but I believed that clubs like Forest and Leeds United could eventually get back into the top flight.
      I watched Samba make all those saves against Sheffield United in my bosses office. He’s an Arsenal supporter, and he was so happy for Forest and for me.
      Last season and having Cooper come in was dreamland. Promotion was incredible. This first season back in the Prem has not been easy, but everyone knew that would be the case. I believe in Steve Cooper.

      I agree. I think they will surprise quite a few people. I have been looking at people's early PL predictions and found it interesting that who those who only watch the PL have predicted that Forest will go down (even having watched their FA Cup run). However, those who watch both the PL and the Championship have predicted that Forest will end up between 10th and 16th. Brentford did, can't see why Forest can't. Especially as I think Forest at the moment are stronger than Brentford were last season.

    Brilliant montage, great tribute to the season! This time last year I was excited for this team but it seemed that the manager at the time held these players back. What summed Hughton up was his assistant Steven Reid got a tune out of them before coops got the job. Fair play to Steven and but all the credit has to go to coops and Dane Murphy for uniting the club on and off the field. I’ve been watching Forest since 1995 where we had the likes of frank Clark, Dave Bassett, Paul Hart and first Billy Davies era with fond memories, now I’ve never seen so much togetherness and we let out our emotions of hurt for 23 years. I was at the last premier league game vs Leicester in 1999 and I’ve been waiting for us to take our chance again in this tough division. Last time we never got that chance due to selling Campbell and van Hooijdonk going on strike, plus losing cooper, gemmil and stone on top of that later on made us lose out what could’ve been a better season. As long we stick to methods by staying on the same page as one another, from the owners, the board, manager, players and the fans. We are finally premier league!!

    The most most moving part of that video was 1:34 when Steve Cooper was walking out having just taken over as Forest Boss
    Think about it, back then - 1 point, 0 wins, bottom of the League - what a daunting and monumental task for that guy which lay ahead
    Yet he met it head in, embraced it and step by step mice the entire Club forward
    So now, fast forward just under 2 years, and stop to think what he’s achieved - it’s 2nd only to what Cloughie achieved here some 40 years ago
    It’s an amazing achievement, thinking where we were 2 years ago to where we are now, and the calibre of players we now have and are in the market for - yeah, think about it, we’ve just had on loan a Keeper who’s a 3 times Champion’s League Winner - that is what Steve Cooper has brought to this Club
    Thank you from the bottom of my heart - it’s been an amazing journey…and guess what?

      I wondered that but if it were me, knowing the blueprint he has copied, his involvement with it and the timing/overlaps and how they both could be films, I would combine the stories. I would start in 2010 and follow the story through right from the very start.

      If you are interested in this side of it and how Cooper turned everything around I have just done a second video on this. I am sorry it is so long though.
      I really wanted to show the blueprint that Cooper is copying at Forest. I particularly wanted to show his involvement in its development; how closely it mirrors the original; and how an understanding of the original can provide a better understanding of how things now work at Forest.

    Fantastic video, thank you for these memories Carly. Just one minor error - you added the wrong Boro loss. You chose the one under Cooper instead of the one under Hughton. They were very similar actually but instead of Yates's backpass it was Horvath's mistake which cost us!

      Oh my God! I have just gone and looked it up! I am so sorry! They all blended together. Although, the reason I basically only have used games since January rather than between October and December was because I didn't feel like until January that the games really felt different (the big Fulham defeat comes to mind).
      Apologies again though. You will have to mentally input the correct game, lol.

      @@carlybishop6160 I'm not sure what you mean because I'm talking about the section about the start of the season when Hughton was in charge. All the games you selected here were before October, except that Boro game. You just needed to put the home game in rather than the away game. The rest is perfect 😁 I think I'm correct in saying you're a new Forest fan though? Seem to remember reading a comment somewhere from you saying you'd started following this season. But yes, I am a new fan. Since January, I think I have watched every game I could. I live in Watford and looked like a bit of a traitor. Watford were relegated on the Saturday and the Bournemouth game was on the Tuesday. So, I turned up to work in my Watford office wearing a Forest shirt and tried to pass it off as "smart casual" as per our office dress code. Lol.

      @@timothyphoenix1081 Haha. Well, I do believe in supporting your home team and have been to several Watford games this season but I always say that Watford is my home team and Forest is my guilty pleasure lol. And I find myself far more emotionally attached to Forest than any other team. I have watched every game (available), listened to every podcast, video, etc, which I just don't have any interest in other than for Forest.
      I probably became a fan very differently to everyone else though. I only really got into football more recently. I used to keep an eye on it but never watched religiously until this season. However, as someone who is a bit of an academic with an interest in politics, psychology and sports science, I had done a lot of research into the science in the sport after the Euros. I had already been watching as many games as I just had loved watching Forest play from about January and it seemed vaguely familiar even if I couldn't work out why. I also didnt know anything about Steve Cooper but in March (can't believe it took me so long to work it out), I suddenly recognised the blueprint he was copying. It is one I had studied in so much detailed. I wont bore you too much with the specifics but I had always wondered what would happen if you replicated that blueprint in a club setting. Would you get the fast turn around like the original? Forest were still 20 points behind Bournemouth but the gap was closing. Now, I not only adored watching them play but it became a fascinating case study of something I had been wondering for months and thought I would have to wait for years for the answer. So, they very quickly went from just a team I loved watching to my favourite team by a long mile.
      So, now I am 100% addicted and feel very guilty for adandoning my home team in such a way. Only a couple of people know me well, get my fascination.

    Even as a lad from Germany, someone who is about five or six hundred miles away from Nottingham and cannot really be considered as a Forest fan (particularly because I'm sympathetic to Notts County as well and I want them to get back to the EFL asap, the proximity of City Ground and Meadow Lane virtually just seperated by the River Trent is impressive), I was seriously shedding two little tears when I saw this stunning video of last season, I just couldn't hide my emotions. I mean, I grew up with Forest in the Premiership as a kid with players such as Des Walker, Steve Stone or Stan Collymore, even if I'm too young to have witnessed the glorious nights in Europe with Brian Clough, but it's obvious that this club is full of history and has totally loyal supporters. And what an incredible story this season was, catching up from last place to the trophy in Wembley after Steve Cooper took over. What an achievement without being loaded with money coming in from Saudi Arabia, other billionaires from the middle east or businessmen from the US like the Glazer family who just come to use a football club as an asset. I'm so glad about the fact that this legend of a club is back in the first tier, the supporters had to suffer for such a long time and first of all, I'm happy for those who did not leave NFFC alone in all these Championship years and even in League One. I wonder if Ebby, this mental guy in his Forest leather jacket from Duisburg, Germany, is still in good health and among you after all these decades he attended the club?

Yates has improved massively this season under coops don’t want max Lowe at all , the link with that striker from New York looks like a good un though. Let samba go if he’s being unreasonable. • @carlybishop6160
      @carlybishop6160  2 года назад

      I think you have missed the point. It was only 6 points off but if you lose 6 out of your first 7 games why on Earth would you expect them to suddenly to catch up those points? If you can't get more than 1 point in 21 that is a massive jump. Historically, the best that anyone has ever done being that far behind is 14th, not 4th with promotion. And you could argue about the loan players but then why couldn't they win a game in the first 7 games? The squad was the same, with the only exceptions being Cook and Surridge who came in during the January window. Plus, it is more than that and the long 23 year wait. Fans are excited as there have also been a change in culture and feel at the club. Something that can't be readily demonstrated in this video. I hope to show it in my next as I want to look at this last year in a different light; looking the blueprint and the methodology.

      Ummm... not sure if this is a serious question or not. He can't even if he wanted to. Gareth's contract has just been extended until December 2024. And looking at the history and digging into Gareth's "negotiations" his new contract last year (particularly that odd end date which I am starting to think I am the only who understands the significance), I think Gareth will leave in August 2026 and he will choose his successor. I also think he will have them lined up already, just like how he was lined up in 2013. However, with that I wouldn't be surprised if Steve Cooper is that chosen successor as he is only candidate who matches the criteria. Not only because of his history and track record (especially at Forest) but I believe it is the method in which he turned Forest around is actually more crucial. And ironically, the only thing is missing from the current criteria is Premier League experience.
      Sorry for the long reply. It is something I have researched a hell of a lot and have found fascinating and actually why I find Steve Cooper so fascinating as he has answered a question that I thought I would have to wait 5 years or so to be answered.
      I am putting a video together to explain what I mean. I think it will take me a month or so though as it will be so heavily researched and I want to get it right.
