Sorry to hear about your condition. I’d combining Dr Esselstyn’s recommendations with time-restricted eating. The idea is to eat in a 8-10 hour window, with consideration given to circadian rhythm , I.e. eating most of your calories earlier in the day. Read the work of Dr Satchin Panda for more info and good luck!
I agree with Imran Hussain, long fasts between meals helps your body repair itself also fasting for days, though this isn't what Dr Esselstyn teaches, if I can recall correctly to chew on greens several times a day to release nitrate oxide into the bloodstream to help open the arteries. He could be right, so far in trying low Carb (keto) Intermittent fasting, no sugar, I'm 56 male have had very high hi BP 200/120 for over 20 years, take no meds, currently my BP averages 150/90 providing I keep to a disciplined lifestyle try to stay away from bad people that cause stress or other situations that cause stress, in the event I get into fight or flight mode bp goes straight up again to very dangerous levels. Life is difficult and does kill you in the end so get right with Jesus (truth) 1st, worry about family, health money etc. next. These are stressful times (cv19 lockdown) and will affect most people if not dealt with acceptance and thankful mindset. We are all on a journey of learning and growing.
@@martinmuldoon603 I tried keto and the recommended fat bombs with coconut oil and would get chest pain right after. I lost too much weight and had no energy. I feel way better on a plant based vegan diet. Best of luck 👍
I come back to Dr. Esselstein's talks often. All this data was available to the medical community and I am still stunned that a doctor recommended that I use Cottonseed oil for my family.
How can the world thank this wonderful man? I was an idiot. I was stupid enough to believe in the meat based keto diet. After 2,5 years it turned a healthy man into a stroke patient. Since 3 years I am trying to stick to a vegan diet. And a lot has improved. However, I now realize I have to eliminate olive oil and have to reduce my consumption of nuts. This man gives me hope. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Hope you live long to spread your wisdom.

Can you tell me more as I'm currently trying keto low Carb, I've lost weight but I struggle with energy, though that is the reason I started it March 19. I feel I'm pre diabetic because after I eat I have an energy crash, sometimes have to go to bed in the middle of the day, others around me think I'm lazy, it is horrible low energy. I'm hoping I'll recover by eating once a day, staying away from sugar carbs etc. I admit I have some concerns when I look at keto doctors they don't look very healthy, most men lose their hair so I've a mixed opinion on which way to go, maybe you can get back to me, thanks

Watch the Physicians Committee in you tube. Listen to Rip Esselstein’ podcasts. All of them. If you are eating the Plant Strong foods recommended you can’t gain weight.
@@keitztravel you are right...dropped oil nut seeds avocados...you have to eat a ton to even maintain weight. I don't like being skinny but if I can keep my already developed mural plaques skinny I'm gonna be fine with the rest of me skinny. The plus side is I can fit into tight places like a kid and now walk up hills even with lung problems.
Dr Esselstyn can the heart muscles thickened and get wider, Their for not allowing good blood flow to the rest of the n body? Is there something I can do to help this, I have one stent as of 2016
Veganism doesnt work for everyone and it actually worsens my health. When diligently followed veganism starts to wreck your health or is killing you, then that’s a serious wake-up call. I’m grateful now to have relied on God and not follow veganism. :)

Carrots and apples, broccoli and greens like lettuce and arugula have no oils. Eat all you want. They have no oil. Avoid processed foods. Most all have oils. For my salads I use organic unsweetened applesauce from the regular store for my salad dressing. Very simple. Can add some organic vinegar like balsamic or red wine vinegar if you want but not necessary. Beans are great. Homemade or canned but rinse the canned.

I am having surgery soon. I have blockages, an aneurism at 5.1 cm, and a leaky heart valve. I started plant based the day after I saw the surgeon on 10/15. I don’t know what it’s doing to my arteries, but I feel so much better I can’t believe it. Thank you so much!
Yep same here I started a vegan diet probably the same time as you and now I feel much better . My doctor thinks I have a heart valve problem because I get breathless going up the stairs or when running . I feel a slight improvement in 4 weeks of being vegan . Can heart valve problems be reversed with diet ?

99% can agree that eating more fruit and vegetables and cutting out processed and refined foods can only be beneficial to our health/nutrition. Regular exercise, good quality sleep and managing stress are also very important. We can argue over meat, dairy, salt and oil. Certainly no one can say anything good about smoking and sugar/sweetners. Dr Esselstyn (one of my hero's!!), information set me on a whole food plant based lifestyle 2 years ago and I completely love it. I don't eat any animal products any more and am very pleased to be a more compassionate and caring person - i mean who can actually support the utterly dreadful modern animal farming methods after all!! My point is that we all can agree on 90% of what we should be doing so let's not get too hooked up over the smaller details. The kitchen is flooding, forget grabbing the mop and start by turning off the tap!😉

Congratulations on making the change. I changed three years ago. Got rid of angina and peripheral artery disease. Sometimes it’s not easy, but every morning i commit to whole food plant based eating. Eating the standard American diet is the root cause of 80% of chronic diseases.
@@marytaylor2544 You’ll do better on whole food (nothing processed), predominantly plants. Will help with fatty liver and any/all vascular issues. Stay away from sugar and oils. Limit salt to the minimum you can tolerate (most salt will be eliminated from your diet if you don’t eat cheese or canned foods). If you’d like a good book to read, try Michael Greger MD’s “How Not to Die,” available free at most US libraries.
"Plant based" diets are killing more people than you realize with their lack of some vitamins/nutrients and excess carbs. 700,000 people died of heart disease in the US last year and most of that was attributable to metabolic disease (insulin resistance) which would be alleviated by lower carbs and higher SATURATED fats, not seed oils.
Yep John I was also on that diet and now have a stent due to it and many other years of unhealthy eating. I am sooooo thankful for Dr. Essy and yes how in this world can I/we EVER thank him for what he does? He has his whole heart and soul into what he is teaching and you can sure tell it. I am one that is more than thankful for him and thankful I had a class mate that wasn't scared to share with me about Dr. Essy's book. That very night I ordered the book and since then have ordered his wife and daughters cookbook as well. I do not eat any oils and am plant based all the way. Still working on getting all those greens in though due to this pandemic we have right now with this virus! UGH I WAS doing really good before this hit and it's hard to get my greens now since I don't go in those stores anymore. Anyway I enjoy watching his vids and how he puts his whole heart and soul into what he's saying.
By my personal experience its not neccessary to alway nd for every1 green is best..but plant based diet nd fasting is good..nd avoid any kind of oil or fat.
I'm not sure a heavy meat diet is good long term, but when I eat that way I wake the next day without anxiety and my body feels good. When I eat grains I wake the next day anxious and very sore in my joints. I have to walk around like a 90 year old (I'm 51) for a few minutes to work out the pain. My guess is I'm very insulin resistant and having issues digesting carbs. I've lost 27 lbs in 2 months eating a heavy meat diet. I think I'll continue this way for weight loss and see if I can reintroduce grains in the future after the weight loss. I seriously cannot eat grains (wheat, corn, rice) without feeling terrible. I have to lay down after I eat that way. With heavy protein/meat diet, I feel fine. No food crash. Maybe if I can get to my ideal wright (need to lose 30 more lbs) I can reintroduce grains? I don't know??? Stroke and heart disease are high in my family. I want to do the right thing and there's so much conflicting info online. Oh well, I'm losing weight for now and enjoying meat. I doubt it's the best long term solution however.
my grandparents and great grandparents all lived healthfully to near 100. they ate bacon and eggs with buttered toast and strong black coffee every day for 90 years. I'm guessing the nitrates in the bacon was the key. lol.
This is all very interesting. I tried eating plant based for a year and was starving all the time, still had my leg cramps, neuropathy, lost a few pounds but still in a lot of pain. I switched to a lo carb way of eating, with intermittent fasting, lost my (severe) leg cramps, lost neuropathy, lost a lot of weight, am no longer staring at looming diabetes, lost carb cravings completely, and am pain free, am limber and feel 30 years younger. I get hungry but don't feel starving. Seems like something in grains causes inflammation for me. I stay away from sugar, of course, grains and oil.
@@996vtwin2 People who have bad experiences with plant-based diets usually eat too many processed foods, too much fat, and not enough fiber and protein. You're not going to be starving all the time if you eat 60+ g of fiber a day. Organic whole grains are anti-inflammatory.
@@RiDankulous Yeah, I was a “McDougaller” for 7 yrs, Following his advice wound up 50lbs overweight with horrendous type two diabetes, Hyperinsulinemia, and a host of other problems. Starches are sugar period!! Not to mention the oxalates, and lectins found in the legumes. As far as I’m concerned, following the advice of McDougall,Esselstyn, Barnard, Fuhrman and Greger will keep your insulin raging😡 and that’s not a good thing!
Grains can cause inflammation. My doctor recommended that I give up grains. I now eat more complex carbs so that I don’t get hungry so often. I’ve lost a pound of week since switching from grains to complex carbs. Best wishes to you.
My experience with this: I was diagnosed with T2D in 1998 at age 40. I immediately started a keto diet (Atkins then) and have been managing my T2D this way, mostly, ever since. I am a skinny, healthy little guy, my A1C is 5.0 to 5.2. Coronary calcium scan score is 73. Good for an old diabetic.There is really a very fat sick person inside me kept at bay by my choice of diet. I know, he came back a couple times over the years when I ate the standard american diet.
The diet Dr. Esselstyn advocates is no sugar, no refined carbs, no vegetable oils. So basically, no junk food. These eliminations, I believe, are much more important than eliminating animal foods.

What I don't like about him saying not to take in Olive Oil is that how many people were using Olive Oil that was blended with Soy Bean Oil or Canola Oil. Even the biggest names in Olive Oil were selling tainted Olive Oil. So then any trial or information would be tainted.
Can someone please explain how other doctors advocate keto diet with high amounts of saturated fats and very low carb for healthy heart and high HDL? Doesn't that cause placauq build up? I'm so confused. NO idea what the truth is anymore.

NO, very low fat whole food plant based diets have the best track record for overall long-term health (and they get you off your meds in the short run too). Low carb achieves short term weight loss and some related benefits but is linked to higher rates of heart disease and premature mortality in the long run.
@@srolesen not all carbs are bad. Certain cultures have eaten rice (Asian) three times a day without issues. The changes happen when there are major shifts in eating patterns especially the western diet. Dr Esselstein is giving us a solution to a major problem. Eskimos eat a lot fat but hardly suffered from heart diseases. The same thing happens in other cultures who have consumed certain foods without problems. But suffer major health when they change their diet or eating patterns.What about just eating when you hungry?
I went vegan and cut out bread and all oils. I lost 40 lbs and I looked sickly. Friends and family asked if everything was ok me? I looked like I had cancer. I stopped it, went on Mediterranean diet gained about 20lbs back and look and feel healthy again.
I think the problem is you cut out bread. To thrive on this diet you have to eat a lot of whole grains. If you are eating a lot of vegetables and fruit and not enough grains you will get malnourished. Grains and legumes must be the majority of your diet. Bread is good for you when it is from fresh milled wheat and homemade. Bread is satisfying and if you eat enough grains until you are filled you should be ok.

The standard reply about gluten is to avoid it if you have diagnosed celiac disease or diagnosed gluten intolerance, otherwise they say it’s OK. Try to get organic gluten products so that the grains don’t have pesticides.
Gluten, a protein, is OK. Unless you fall into the very very small percentage of people who have an intolerance to it. Example, people who suffer from celiac disease should not eat gluten because they cannot tolerate it.
Wanna be safe? And healthy? Stop eating it! Problem is, we are all going to die at some point, so how long do we want to live, and live in health at the same time? I love most food that is not good for me but decided I want to be healthy so I have daily choices of what to eat! Some days I do ok and other days not so much! I’ve discovered consistency is the key though. I found bread that is gluten-free and it’s not too bad.
I don't think it's very responsible for a doctor talking about curing CAD not mention the role of diabetes and advocate for eating grains. You can say what you want about meat/dairy vs no meat/dairy. That's a personal decision. But to not discuss the complete picture of the causes of CAD and the role of metabolic disorders and insulin resistance is inaccurate.
You are exactly right! 90% of inflamation damage to the arteries is caused by insulin resistance. Doctors are saying that an A1C reading of 5.6 is normal. Eating nuts and twigs, fruits and vegetables may be fine for some but how about someone who has a persistently high fasting blood glucose level. I would avoid most all grains.
Amazing how many people cast negative comments and sound like they missed the doctor’s details of who was in these studies, and that he tells the improvements and negative information, in a methodical fashion. Biggest non-scientific reason to believe him- this is the diet he and his family eat. Search RUclips and you’ll find his son, daughter, and wife practicing what they preach.
After six weeks on a keto diet, my friend had a stroke! Thank goodness he recovered but with a $10,000 hospital bill! I recommended a whole plant food diet and sent him some books.🌱🌱
Six weeks is not enough time to prove that Keto was the cause, that's totally ridiculous. It's very likely that through many years his life style and diet caused that. It takes years to get to that poor state of health.
Very interesting! I'm on a low carb diet, but only small amounts of meat, however, plenty of fish such as salmon and also several eggs a day. This presentation makes me question my approach. I started doing this to shrink my enlarged prostate, which indeed shrunk a bit within 6 months. I do ingest plenty of olive oil, which is also propagated by eg. Steve Gundry. I think tainted olive oil really is a problem, but what about pure, non-filtered organic olive oil? Is that really a problem?
The diet excludes any animal with a face or mother that has a face so this would exclude fish and shellfish but what about mussels, clams and scallops?

Protein from legumes (greatest amount) and grains (less but still adds up) and vegetables (they add a bit) If I eat like 250g dry legumes and 300g dry pasta in a day that is already agout 100g protein
Too much protein damages the kidneys. We only need like around 60 grams of protein a day, easily obtainable from plants in a diverse diet of fruits, veggies and whole grains and legumes.
Leafy greens are natural blood thinners that’s why people taking prescription blood thinners are told to limit or eliminate certain foods. You might like the new book The Plant-based Athlete. It discusses protein in detail. 🌱💪🏼
Nobody is diagnosed with a PROTEIN deficiency.You get proteins from vegetables.fasting also causes atophagy.the body eating itself provides protein.Ive read this several times from dr.s that promote fasting.

I agree wholeheartedly! My feelings are that it often takes that much time and info to convince most folks. People like us are already convinced and simply want actionable information.
The doctor should know. Write him or email or something. I think that certain things take longer in the body to heal, to build back up... I also think the lymph system is involved in nearly all aspects of helping to clear unhealthy tissue up ... keep looking and believe. I am searching for my own answers too.
For those who are watching this video in 2022 - Higher olive oil intake was associated with a lower risk of CHD and total CVD in two large prospective cohorts of US men and women. The substitution of margarine, butter, mayonnaise, and dairy fat with olive oil could lead to lower risk of CHD and CVD.
Olive oil slides plaques off the arteries and prevents plaques from sticking in the first place but he won't tell you that because he wants a repeat customer who is always sick.
I think what you are missing with the gut bacteria and the meat based diet is that the meat is profuse with antibiotics as this is the method for raising the animals here in the USA as it gets them matured quicker and thus quicker to market for profits in the corporate scheme of food production. Thus it would factor in to a study if the diet was "organic" raised animals or commercial grade. Another factor would also be based on the public water supply and if the water consumed is fluoridated …...which is adverse for consumption

@@pierrenormandeau5414 yes, but in the grand design, the essential amino acids you need as a human can not be all found in the plant based diet and we lack the enzyme to break down cellulose hence the materials need to be well chewed up to break the cell walls to get to the nutrient content. But lacking a critical amino acid that is only in flesh. In the wild.......sources of flesh would be basically plant fed as opposed to flesh from a predatory beast that would be a threat to a primate as a carnivore. Its an interesting conundrum in that primates are not primarily thought of as canivores or predatory
@@pierrenormandeau5414 Yes you can say all that and it appears great on paper. The reality is different as it is about digesting and absorbing the nutrients in the small intestines into the body. Plant based diet has to get passed the cellulose cell wall to get the interior of the cell and we do not have the enzymes to do so, so we need a mixture in our diet to get all the complexed amino's plus other nutrients such as B12 from red tissue as its main source. If you are examining stool samples based for digestion, you can't tell if gut bacteria beyond to small intestine has acted on the material or if it has all been digested in the small intestine and achieved uptake in the body for utilization by the body. You definitely do not want to have a major source of soy in your diet as a man nor a woman as it is processed into estrogen.....you do not want to give estrogen to a man, and too much estrogen in a woman can give rise to female cancers. You do not want plant based diet based on the use of chemical methods to grow and process as it would not be CLEAN, the same way as the process of producing flesh on the industrial scale. Post industrial revolution has contaiminated the environment so you have to know what is in the soil, and post WW2 chemicals and pharmaceuticals have passed through on into the water systems and think about irrigation and drinking water
@@pierrenormandeau5414 What you have to do is increase your OMEGA 3 and shut out all the OMEGA 6 sources whch amounts to cutting out the processed foods that have them along with the high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener.....and eat 8 shelled wlanuts a day and add 2 table spoons of ground flaxseed into your diet during the day....which is not much. Substitutes for lards and butter arethe culprit post WW2.....all man made, as post WW2 is the age of the synthetics and artificials
Isn't it the case that these people you cite live a stress free lifestyle? I followed your diet after my HA and stents and lost a huge amount of weight. To such an extent 86kg-66kg that I was really sick and looked terrible. I do have very low cholesterol and now eat most things, but no processed foods and have levelled out at 72kg at 6ft. It is the case that those on a vegan diet live shorter lives than either a vegitarian or omnivore one, so this is not conclusive. However, a vegan diet includes crisps and oil, so your point about would make a difference. There is also psychology involved here, that cabbage 4 times a day would make me thoroughly miserable and depression/stress is highly inflamatory. This is all food for thought and thanks.
Actually, the Esselstyn diet is still the gold standard for preventing, stopping, and reversing heart disease and despite confusion arising from weak studies with mislabeled groups, the best and most recent research still says that eating more saturated animal fat and elevated LDL levels are causal for heart disease.
That’s correct. No oil! As for those cultures you speak of who consume olive oil on a regular basis and have no artery disease, well, he’s not speaking to them so much as he is speaking to Americans who are fat and obese and consume a lot of garbage “fake food” along with all the oil.

I find this really strange, I have been keto, (NOT loads of bacon n meat) very little, loads of veg and only good oils and have made great strides. I eat eggs and some sheep and goat cheese. I eat no cow, and definitely no grain, its so bad for the gut. If there are problems in the gut i still think you'll have probs in the blood vessels, gut is key
Where did you get the idea that all grains are bad for the gut? Cheese and meat do nothing for the gut but Wholegrain jumbo Oats for instance does so much good for gut. I am a Biochemist & this was my field of research for my Masters degree. There are grains like Wheat which may not suit those who are gluten intolerant but try not do dump all grains in that category. Grains come in so many shapes & forms from Oats to Teff (Ethiopian high protein grain and an excellent food for the health of our microbiome).
If you are on keto and are trying to eliminate good healthy carbs from your day-to-day diet, you are only painting yourself into a corner. Unbeknownst to you, your cells are becoming congested with lipids. And soon, insulin will knock on their door as usual but, get no reply. This will be the pre-diabetic stage. Then you’ll one day out of the blue go in to full-blown diabetes.
What I eat a nice large salad what do when I am hungry before I go to bed. I wake up in the night or I can't go to sleep because I'm hungry, of course I go to the kitchen and eat. I appreciate this, but ideas? Plain pasta? and wholw wheat pasta is like cardboard.. I'll try the spinach
That sounds more like food addiction than hunger. If you’re hungry, eat vegetables. If you don’t want to eat vegetables, then you’re not hungry. Eat ONLY what is nutritious.
I’ve been thinking about what you said. Check out the work of Dr John McDougall who advocates eating complex starches to alleviate hunger. Like you, salads don’t keep me full for more than 3 hours. Potatoes and beans do. I like McDougall’s books but not his videos. Best wishes to you.
What about oxalates and lectins..? Plant protein almost killed me.. Kidney stones, oxalate buildup in vascular system and organs, etc.. Carnivore diet saved my life. (literally)

Oh boy, who should we trust when it comes to diet....??? One says so the other says so....i think we should eat everything, just eat less of it! Fast two days a week and i think you are going to be good.
He addresses this is the book and says it’ll prolong heart disease but eventually won’t work. Moderation simply does not work. Have to be all in on this
I had oarta dissection 2018; My heart condition worst when I had diarrhea (for 2 months-after I eat old food from my ref-May/June). I went to ER (MAY-5days) and doctors didn't treat my diarrhea. They focused on my AFib. Went back to ER (June-5days) same focused ony AFib but not diarrhea. I was so weak, not eating. I talked to my Cardio why not treating my diarrhea and up to now the whole 2.months it didn't stop. Daily i had lab tests but wasn't given results coz the doctors were not checking on it. Doc gave me diarrhea med only the day I got mad with her and it stopped from 4-5 times a day...it became 2-3 a day; until once a day. I moved to another hospital location and reported the doctors and nurses. I wasn't allowed to eat for 3 days during my stay in ER and I know my potassium was low coz I said I felt I was dying.
Dr. Esselstyn I am a 66 year old UK male resident. I retired from my role as an office based consultant in the construction industry in October 2021. I am not over weight -188lb, and 5'-10" at MI now, post MI have reduced to 170lb, I dont smoke or drink, I play golf twice weekly, but unexpectedly I still suffered a MI in July of 2022. Was rushed in to Harefield to have a stent fitted, that worked and we are on the mend... In the UK we are fast catching up with the USA with bad diet, I was in USA in the year Obama ran for President and I know you guys are in deep trouble with food. But here in UK NO ONE has talked to me regarding any basic nutrition, my surgeon has prescribed me with a cocktail of the usual drugs, that you must be very familiar with, including Statins.... which I am against the use of as I want to try to manage my recovery myself using a non meat and dairy regime as I dont trust Doctors in the UK who have no idea at all about nutrition. My wife of 40 years bless her, is shopping for Veggie sausages etc, which are made with OIL etc. What can we do to avoid OIL in products, and is the small amount of OIL in these products harmful to my recovery. Naturally as you are the father of plant based nutrition.. I welcome any comment you may have. I have your book on order, Sir, via Amazon.
To avoid oil, avoid all processed food. Eat only whole food. The Esselstyn’s have published several cook books that might be worth getting. I don’t know whether or not you have public libraries in the UK the way we do in the US, but here in the US we can offer borrow these books for free. Many doctors are now saying that processed foods (those that have a list of ingredients on the label) are the root cause of 80% of all diseases, including dementia. I follow Esselstyn’s diet on average 90-95% and have reversed angina and peripheral artery disease. I’ve lost 40 pounds and much more energy. Best wishes on your new journey.

Sorry to hear about your condition. I’d combining Dr Esselstyn’s recommendations with time-restricted eating. The idea is to eat in a 8-10 hour window, with consideration given to circadian rhythm , I.e. eating most of your calories earlier in the day. Read the work of Dr Satchin Panda for more info and good luck!
I agree with Imran Hussain, long fasts between meals helps your body repair itself also fasting for days, though this isn't what Dr Esselstyn teaches, if I can recall correctly to chew on greens several times a day to release nitrate oxide into the bloodstream to help open the arteries. He could be right, so far in trying low Carb (keto) Intermittent fasting, no sugar, I'm 56 male have had very high hi BP 200/120 for over 20 years, take no meds, currently my BP averages 150/90 providing I keep to a disciplined lifestyle try to stay away from bad people that cause stress or other situations that cause stress, in the event I get into fight or flight mode bp goes straight up again to very dangerous levels. Life is difficult and does kill you in the end so get right with Jesus (truth) 1st, worry about family, health money etc. next. These are stressful times (cv19 lockdown) and will affect most people if not dealt with acceptance and thankful mindset. We are all on a journey of learning and growing.

I come back to Dr. Esselstein's talks often. All this data was available to the medical community and I am still stunned that a doctor recommended that I use Cottonseed oil for my family.

Can you tell me more as I'm currently trying keto low Carb, I've lost weight but I struggle with energy, though that is the reason I started it March 19. I feel I'm pre diabetic because after I eat I have an energy crash, sometimes have to go to bed in the middle of the day, others around me think I'm lazy, it is horrible low energy. I'm hoping I'll recover by eating once a day, staying away from sugar carbs etc. I admit I have some concerns when I look at keto doctors they don't look very healthy, most men lose their hair so I've a mixed opinion on which way to go, maybe you can get back to me, thanks

I don't like being skinny but if I can keep my already developed mural plaques skinny I'm gonna be fine with the rest of me skinny. Veganism doesnt work for everyone and it actually worsens my health. When diligently followed veganism starts to wreck your health or is killing you, then that’s a serious wake-up call. I’m grateful now to have relied on God and not follow veganism. :)

Carrots and apples, broccoli and greens like lettuce and arugula have no oils. Eat all you want. They have no oil. Avoid processed foods. Most all have oils. For my salads I use organic unsweetened applesauce from the regular store for my salad dressing. Very simple. Can add some organic vinegar like balsamic or red wine vinegar if you want but not necessary. Beans are great. Homemade or canned but rinse the canned.

My doctor thinks I have a heart valve problem because I get breathless going up the stairs or when running . I feel a slight improvement in 4 weeks of being vegan . 99% can agree that eating more fruit and vegetables and cutting out processed and refined foods can only be beneficial to our health/nutrition. Regular exercise, good quality sleep and managing stress are also very important.
We can argue over meat, dairy, salt and oil. Certainly no one can say anything good about smoking and sugar/sweetners.
Dr Esselstyn (one of my hero's!!), information set me on a whole food plant based lifestyle 2 years ago and I completely love it. I don't eat any animal products any more and am very pleased to be a more compassionate and caring person - i mean who can actually support the utterly dreadful modern animal farming methods after all!!
My point is that we all can agree on 90% of what we should be doing so let's not get too hooked up over the smaller details.
The kitchen is flooding, forget grabbing the mop and start by turning off the tap!😉

@@marytaylor2544 You’ll do better on whole food (nothing processed), predominantly plants. Will help with fatty liver and any/all vascular issues. Stay away from sugar and oils. Limit salt to the minimum you can tolerate (most salt will be eliminated from your diet if you don’t eat cheese or canned foods). If you’d like a good book to read, try Michael Greger MD’s “How Not to Die,” available free at most US libraries.

"Plant based" diets are killing more people than you realize with their lack of some vitamins/nutrients and excess carbs. 700,000 people died of heart disease in the US last year and most of that was attributable to metabolic disease (insulin resistance) which would be alleviated by lower carbs and higher SATURATED fats, not seed oils.
It seems a majority plant based diet with occasional fish, meat is the way to go.
Keep active, reduce stress etc. The odd pudding may be good too.

Yep John I was also on that diet and now have a stent due to it and many other years of unhealthy eating. I am sooooo thankful for Dr. Essy and yes how in this world can I/we EVER thank him for what he does? He has his whole heart and soul into what he is teaching and you can sure tell it. I am one that is more than thankful for him and thankful I had a class mate that wasn't scared to share with me about Dr. Essy's book. That very night I ordered the book and since then have ordered his wife and daughters cookbook as well. I do not eat any oils and am plant based all the way. Still working on getting all those greens in though due to this pandemic we have right now with this virus! UGH I WAS doing really good before this hit and it's hard to get my greens now since I don't go in those stores anymore. Anyway I enjoy watching his vids and how he puts his whole heart and soul into what he's saying.

By my personal experience its not neccessary to alway nd for every1 green is best..but plant based diet nd fasting is good..nd avoid any kind of oil or fat.

Every time I get anxious I replay his lecture while I wait for all my test results
I'm not sure a heavy meat diet is good long term, but when I eat that way I wake the next day without anxiety and my body feels good. When I eat grains I wake the next day anxious and very sore in my joints. I have to walk around like a 90 year old (I'm 51) for a few minutes to work out the pain. My guess is I'm very insulin resistant and having issues digesting carbs. I've lost 27 lbs in 2 months eating a heavy meat diet. I think I'll continue this way for weight loss and see if I can reintroduce grains in the future after the weight loss. I seriously cannot eat grains (wheat, corn, rice) without feeling terrible. I have to lay down after I eat that way. With heavy protein/meat diet, I feel fine. No food crash. Maybe if I can get to my ideal wright (need to lose 30 more lbs) I can reintroduce grains? I don't know??? Stroke and heart disease are high in my family. I want to do the right thing and there's so much conflicting info online. Oh well, I'm losing weight for now and enjoying meat. I doubt it's the best long term solution however.

This is all very interesting. I tried eating plant based for a year and was starving all the time, still had my leg cramps, neuropathy, lost a few pounds but still in a lot of pain. I switched to a lo carb way of eating, with intermittent fasting, lost my (severe) leg cramps, lost neuropathy, lost a lot of weight, am no longer staring at looming diabetes, lost carb cravings completely, and am pain free, am limber and feel 30 years younger. I get hungry but don't feel starving. Seems like something in grains causes inflammation for me. I stay away from sugar, of course, grains and oil.

Following his advice wound up 50lbs overweight with horrendous type two diabetes, Hyperinsulinemia, and a host of other problems. Starches are sugar period!! Not to mention the oxalates, and lectins found in the legumes.
As far as I’m concerned, following the advice of McDougall,Esselstyn, Barnard, Fuhrman and Greger will keep your insulin raging😡 and that’s not a good thing!
Grains can cause inflammation. My doctor recommended that I give up grains. I now eat more complex carbs so that I don’t get hungry so often. I’ve lost a pound of week since switching from grains to complex carbs. Best wishes to you.

My experience with this: I was diagnosed with T2D in 1998 at age 40. I immediately started a keto diet (Atkins then) and have been managing my T2D this way, mostly, ever since. I am a skinny, healthy little guy, my A1C is 5.0 to 5.2. Coronary calcium scan score is 73. Good for an old diabetic.There is really a very fat sick person inside me kept at bay by my choice of diet. I know, he came back a couple times over the years when I ate the standard american diet.

The diet Dr. Esselstyn advocates is no sugar, no refined carbs, no vegetable oils. So basically, no junk food. These eliminations, I believe, are much more important than eliminating animal foods.

What I don't like about him saying not to take in Olive Oil is that how many people were using Olive Oil that was blended with Soy Bean Oil or Canola Oil. Even the biggest names in Olive Oil were selling tainted Olive Oil. So then any trial or information would be tainted.

NO, very low fat whole food plant based diets have the best track record for overall long-term health (and they get you off your meds in the short run too). Low carb achieves short term weight loss and some related benefits but is linked to higher rates of heart disease and premature mortality in the long run.
@@srolesen not all carbs are bad. Certain cultures have eaten rice (Asian) three times a day without issues. The changes happen when there are major shifts in eating patterns especially the western diet. Dr Esselstein is giving us a solution to a major problem. Eskimos eat a lot fat but hardly suffered from heart diseases. The same thing happens in other cultures who have consumed certain foods without problems. But suffer major health when they change their diet or eating patterns.What about just eating when you hungry?

I went vegan and cut out bread and all oils. I lost 40 lbs and I looked sickly. Friends and family asked if everything was ok me? I looked like I had cancer. I stopped it, went on Mediterranean diet gained about 20lbs back and look and feel healthy again.

I think the problem is you cut out bread. To thrive on this diet you have to eat a lot of whole grains. If you are eating a lot of vegetables and fruit and not enough grains you will get malnourished. Grains and legumes must be the majority of your diet. Bread is good for you when it is from fresh milled wheat and homemade. Bread is satisfying and if you eat enough grains until you are filled you should be ok.

The standard reply about gluten is to avoid it if you have diagnosed celiac disease or diagnosed gluten intolerance, otherwise they say it’s OK. Try to get organic gluten products so that the grains don’t have pesticides.
Gluten, a protein, is OK. Unless you fall into the very very small percentage of people who have an intolerance to it. Example, people who suffer from celiac disease should not eat gluten because they cannot tolerate it.
Wanna be safe? And healthy? Stop eating it! Problem is, we are all going to die at some point, so how long do we want to live, and live in health at the same time? I love most food that is not good for me but decided I want to be healthy so I have daily choices of what to eat! Some days I do ok and other days not so much! I’ve discovered consistency is the key though. I found bread that is gluten-free and it’s not too bad.
I don't think it's very responsible for a doctor talking about curing CAD not mention the role of diabetes and advocate for eating grains. You can say what you want about meat/dairy vs no meat/dairy. That's a personal decision. But to not discuss the complete picture of the causes of CAD and the role of metabolic disorders and insulin resistance is inaccurate.

90% of inflamation damage to the arteries is caused by insulin resistance. Doctors are saying that an A1C reading of 5.6 is normal. Eating nuts and twigs, fruits and vegetables may be fine for some but how about someone who has a persistently high fasting blood glucose level. I would avoid most all grains.
Amazing how many people cast negative comments and sound like they missed the doctor’s details of who was in these studies, and that he tells the improvements and negative information, in a methodical fashion. Biggest non-scientific reason to believe him- this is the diet he and his family eat. Search RUclips and you’ll find his son, daughter, and wife practicing what they preach.

Six weeks is not enough time to prove that Keto was the cause, that's totally ridiculous. It's very likely that through many years his life style and diet caused that. It takes years to get to that poor state of health.

Very interesting! I'm on a low carb diet, but only small amounts of meat, however, plenty of fish such as salmon and also several eggs a day. This presentation makes me question my approach. I started doing this to shrink my enlarged prostate, which indeed shrunk a bit within 6 months. I do ingest plenty of olive oil, which is also propagated by eg. Steve Gundry. I think tainted olive oil really is a problem, but what about pure, non-filtered organic olive oil? Is that really a problem?
The diet excludes any animal with a face or mother that has a face so this would exclude fish and shellfish but what about mussels, clams and scallops?

The doctor should know. Write him or email or something. I think that certain things take longer in the body to heal, to build back up... For those who are watching this video in 2022 - Higher olive oil intake was associated with a lower risk of CHD and total CVD in two large prospective cohorts of US men and women. The substitution of margarine, butter, mayonnaise, and dairy fat with olive oil could lead to lower risk of CHD and CVD.
Olive oil slides plaques off the arteries and prevents plaques from sticking in the first place but he won't tell you that because he wants a repeat customer who is always sick.
I think what you are missing with the gut bacteria and the meat based diet is that the meat is profuse with antibiotics as this is the method for raising the animals here in the USA as it gets them matured quicker and thus quicker to market for profits in the corporate scheme of food production. Thus it would factor in to a study if the diet was "organic" raised animals or commercial grade. Another factor would also be based on the public water supply and if the water consumed is fluoridated …...which is adverse for consumption

@@pierrenormandeau5414 yes, but in the grand design, the essential amino acids you need as a human can not be all found in the plant based diet and we lack the enzyme to break down cellulose hence the materials need to be well chewed up to break the cell walls to get to the nutrient content. But lacking a critical amino acid that is only in flesh. In the wild.......sources of flesh would be basically plant fed as opposed to flesh from a predatory beast that would be a threat to a primate as a carnivore. Its an interesting conundrum in that primates are not primarily thought of as canivores or predatory

@@pierrenormandeau5414 Yes you can say all that and it appears great on paper. The reality is different as it is about digesting and absorbing the nutrients in the small intestines into the body. Plant based diet has to get passed the cellulose cell wall to get the interior of the cell and we do not have the enzymes to do so, so we need a mixture in our diet to get all the complexed amino's plus other nutrients such as B12 from red tissue as its main source. If you are examining stool samples based for digestion, you can't tell if gut bacteria beyond to small intestine has acted on the material or if it has all been digested in the small intestine and achieved uptake in the body for utilization by the body. You definitely do not want to have a major source of soy in your diet as a man nor a woman as it is processed into estrogen.....you do not want to give estrogen to a man, and too much estrogen in a woman can give rise to female cancers. You do not want plant based diet based on the use of chemical methods to grow and process as it would not be CLEAN, the same way as the process of producing flesh on the industrial scale. Post industrial revolution has contaiminated the environment so you have to know what is in the soil, and post WW2 chemicals and pharmaceuticals have passed through on into the water systems and think about irrigation and drinking water

Isn't it the case that these people you cite live a stress free lifestyle? I followed your diet after my HA and stents and lost a huge amount of weight. To such an extent 86kg-66kg that I was really sick and looked terrible. I do have very low cholesterol and now eat most things, but no processed foods and have levelled out at 72kg at 6ft. It is the case that those on a vegan diet live shorter lives than either a vegitarian or omnivore one, so this is not conclusive. However, a vegan diet includes crisps and oil, so your point about would make a difference. There is also psychology involved here, that cabbage 4 times a day would make me thoroughly miserable and depression/stress is highly inflamatory. This is all food for thought and thanks.

Actually, the Esselstyn diet is still the gold standard for preventing, stopping, and reversing heart disease and despite confusion arising from weak studies with mislabeled groups, the best and most recent research still says that eating more saturated animal fat and elevated LDL levels are causal for heart disease.

How about repairing the gut
I find this really strange, I have been keto, (NOT loads of bacon n meat) very little, loads of veg and only good oils and have made great strides. I eat eggs and some sheep and goat cheese. I eat no cow, and definitely no grain, its so bad for the gut. If there are problems in the gut i still think you'll have probs in the blood vessels, gut is key
Where did you get the idea that all grains are bad for the gut? Cheese and meat do nothing for the gut but Wholegrain jumbo Oats for instance does so much good for gut. I am a Biochemist & this was my field of research for my Masters degree. There are grains like Wheat which may not suit those who are gluten intolerant but try not do dump all grains in that category. Grains come in so many shapes & forms from Oats to Teff (Ethiopian high protein grain and an excellent food for the health of our microbiome).
If you are on keto and are trying to eliminate good healthy carbs from your day-to-day diet, you are only painting yourself into a corner. Unbeknownst to you, your cells are becoming congested with lipids. And soon, insulin will knock on their door as usual but, get no reply. This will be the pre-diabetic stage. Then you’ll one day out of the blue go in to full-blown diabetes.

That sounds more like food addiction than hunger. If you’re hungry, eat vegetables. If you don’t want to eat vegetables, then you’re not hungry. Eat ONLY what is nutritious.
I’ve been thinking about what you said. Check out the work of Dr John McDougall who advocates eating complex starches to alleviate hunger. Like you, salads don’t keep me full for more than 3 hours. Potatoes and beans do. I like McDougall’s books but not his videos. Best wishes to you.
What about oxalates and lectins..? Plant protein almost killed me.. Kidney stones, oxalate buildup in vascular system and organs, etc..

Plant protein didn't almost kill you, eating lots of high oxalate foods was the problem. You have to avoid those and drink lots of water.

I had oarta dissection 2018; My heart condition worst when I had diarrhea (for 2 months-after I eat old food from my ref-May/June). I went to ER (MAY-5days) and doctors didn't treat my diarrhea. They focused on my AFib. Went back to ER (June-5days) same focused ony AFib but not diarrhea. I was so weak, not eating. I talked to my Cardio why not treating my diarrhea and up to now the whole 2.months it didn't stop. Daily i had lab tests but wasn't given results coz the doctors were not checking on it. Doc gave me diarrhea med only the day I got mad with her and it stopped from 4-5 times a day...it became 2-3 a day; until once a day. I moved to another hospital location and reported the doctors and nurses. I wasn't allowed to eat for 3 days during my stay in ER and I know my potassium was low coz I said I felt I was dying.
Also lost 18lbs on plant based.
Dr. Esselstyn I am a 66 year old UK male resident. I retired from my role as an office based consultant in the construction industry in October 2021. I am not over weight -188lb, and 5'-10" at MI now, post MI have reduced to 170lb, I dont smoke or drink, I play golf twice weekly, but unexpectedly I still suffered a MI in July of 2022. Was rushed in to Harefield to have a stent fitted, that worked and we are on the mend... In the UK we are fast catching up with the USA with bad diet, I was in USA in the year Obama ran for President and I know you guys are in deep trouble with food. But here in UK NO ONE has talked to me regarding any basic nutrition, my surgeon has prescribed me with a cocktail of the usual drugs, that you must be very familiar with, including Statins.... which I am against the use of as I want to try to manage my recovery myself using a non meat and dairy regime as I dont trust Doctors in the UK who have no idea at all about nutrition. My wife of 40 years bless her, is shopping for Veggie sausages etc, which are made with OIL etc. What can we do to avoid OIL in products, and is the small amount of OIL in these products harmful to my recovery. Naturally as you are the father of plant based nutrition.. I welcome any comment you may have. I have your book on order, Sir, via Amazon.
To avoid oil, avoid all processed food. Eat only whole food. The Esselstyn’s have published several cook books that might be worth getting. I don’t know whether or not you have public libraries in the UK the way we do in the US, but here in the US we can offer borrow these books for free. Many doctors are now saying that processed foods (those that have a list of ingredients on the label) are the root cause of 80% of all diseases, including dementia. I follow Esselstyn’s diet on average 90-95% and have reversed angina and peripheral artery disease. I’ve lost 40 pounds and much more energy. Best wishes on your new journey.
