- Welcome back to Ask Allen About Low Carb Cocktails
Today I am continuing with one of the world’s oldest spirits that pre-dates rum, Baravia-Arrack von Oosten and and the Smoking Jet Pilot cocktail.
As a reminder from last week, Batavia-Arrack van Oosten is a rum-like spirit made from fermented red rice and sugar cane or molasses, bottled at a high proof without aging. The research I did was inconsistent saying whether it used sugar cane or molasses, so I am not sure, but I think it is made with sugar cane lending to the funky taste profile.
Go review last week’s video for the review of the spirit and some of the history. Now let’s try the cocktails.
Smoking Jet Pilot
Ingredients:
• 1 oz mezcal
• 0.75 oz Batavia Arrack
• 0.75 oz reposado tequila
• 0.5 oz lime juice
• 0.5 oz grapefruit juice (1.5g carbs)
• 0.5 oz Falernum (or cinnamon simple syrup)
• 0.25 tsp Cumbé (or Herbsaint or Brandy/Cognac)
• 1 dash Angostura bitters
Instructions:
1. Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.
2. Shake 20-30 seconds until chilled well.
3. Fill a tall glass with pebble or crushed ice.
4. Strain into glass and serve with a grapefruit peel twist for garnish.
So that is the Smoking Jet Pilot Cocktails. You should try this cocktail. If you can’t find Batavia arrack you might try a White Rum with some funk (an Agricole Rhum, or something simpler like DonQ Crystal). I think you will like this.
