My mom taught music almost all of her life. (She was giving lessons at 15, and continued until she died at 86). I once asked her which requiem she would want performed when she went, and this was always her choice.
Thanks for sharing that memory.
How strange , I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Outstandingly gorgeous and a preview of what heaven will offer. Thank you Beriloz. @@WDRKlassik
i shall never forget the ending of the movie Tree of Life where the Lux Eterna plays, then the Amen...such a sublime melding of imagery and music
What a remarkable performance. And what a remarkable technical achievement both with the sound engineering and with the video recording, guided by wonderful direction of the very many, and very fluid, cameras. Of course while I may marvel at the technical feats, the music is of prime importance. And what a magnificent and superb performance this is. The cathedral contributes significant reverb, but the engineers have managed to capture relatively clear musical lines, while allowing the reverb to contribute to the richness of the sound. "Off-stage" musos are judiciously placed in the copious appropriate parts of the cathedral, and singers also make use of the geography of the setting. If you seek the splendour that Berlioz provides and not the minimlist approach of some conductors, come and listen with the volume up (and NOT in a mobile phone) and let the music wash over you - this is well worth it. As I said, a remarkable performance and recording.
I had read that Berlioz had said "If all of my works were to be destroyed save one, i would beg mercy for the Requiem"
It’s easy to see why! An epic work, from the soul!
The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
This might be the most even-keeled, precise, and tempo-appropriate interpretation of the Berlioz Requiem I've ever come across... the brass bands are in sync during the Tuba mirum, the choir has "bite" instead of a fluffy soft choral sound, the orchestra is well balanced, soloist sounds great, Saraste is calm (instead of sweating) and keeps things moving at an early Romantic clip, and the reverb is captured beautifully. Great night to be at the cathedral!
Thank you for the compliment!
We're glad to hear that you enjoyed our performance 🥰
Choirs are way too small, though.
This is insane. How can one human even be blessed with the talent and discipline to compose something of this quality and magnitude? It's a humbling experience, just to get to hear it.
In the time of his era (1800 and before) people had MUCH longer attention spans b/c nothing was instant. There were quite a number of very talented geniuses during that era. Mozart was another one who lived in the mid 1700's and who was an absolute genius. I believe that this requiem was for his father's funeral.
Berlioz was also a gifted writer. You should give a read to his autobiography and his funny comment on music and performances in his book "Evenings with the Orchestra".
not a bless but practice practice practice
The Heart opened. We àre now One! Sanctus is Sublime!
@@gljm Book: INTRODUCTION TO THE ORCHESTRA - Hector Berlioz
This Requiem is especially dear to me. USCLB the college I attended performed this with orchestra at a Methodist Church that had a great balcony for the brass. It was So Moving!!! There was a storm at the same time as our
performance, During the 'Tuba' section, where all the brass plays, the lights flickered and the doors were swinging open and shut.. lightening and thunder crackled,.. and as we discovered when we finished, a tornado had passed right by us, pulling up the trees on the sidewalk right next to the Church. AMAZING!!!! None of us were frightened, we were INSPIRED -- and put everything we had into our singing. Still have this work memorized.
Oh, to have been there! This is the setting this requiem deserves. They’re probably lucky I wasn’t there… more than likely I would have been openly crying at the beauty of it all.
Possibly the most beautiful and profoundly spiritual ending of any classical work. Fantastic performance.
Vielen Dank! 😊
it is gorgeous, a fantastic work
It"s hard to believe that this incredible work could have come from the hand of man.
The human mind is truly wonderful. I’m so grateful that Berlioz developed his talents so that the world could hear what was in his heart.
There are a handful of RUclips channels helping me get through the global pandemic and a serious automobile accident. This is one of those channels. Mit tiefer Dankbarkeit aus Vermont, USA. 🐧
How are you feeling now? Better, one hopes?
@@classicalduck I'm fine, thank you. ☺ Like most of us, I'm vaccinated, watching all the "bad" numbers going down, and looking forward to doing some traveling later this year. Have a safe in interesting year! 😁
The composer; the composition; the choir; the orchestra; the soloists; the conductor; and the setting, are all a testament to the Western Culture that so many are trying to minimize, even villainize, in our twisted world.
they try to TOTALLY destroy it. The more ignorant they are the more they are enthusiastic of destroying of human achievements.
Two comments that entirely miss the mark.
@John, amen brother
This performance is fantastic. It is clear, well defined, the interplay of voices is superb, the tempi well chosen and it is dramatically moving. Thank you!
This is marvelous. What a joy to listen to. I must say, what a talented composer Berlioz was. Also I must say the orchestra and choir where outstanding. What a performance. Wow! Thanks so much for uploading this.
Our pleasure!
We are happy that you like it. 🥰
Wow. What a wonderful performance, especially impressive in the Tuba mirum, with the brass choirs spread around and the reverb in that huge space. It is a prime moment for things to get off, but not in this performance!
Lady on the right of conductor is truly satisfied with this performance.
Wonderful setting for this magnificent work.
Berlioz's music has suffered from a great deal of misunderstand over the years with his critics calling his music things like :"..the work of a tipsy chimpanzee" . Even Debussy said of him that he was a "Monster, not a musician" but works such as this and his "Symphony Fantastic" etc have proved his critics wrong.
gljm 1159 -- But isn't he broadly considered a gifted orchestrator...in the panthèon with Rimsky, Respighi and Ravel? Greetings from Acapulco!
The best performance ever.
Thank you!
Music on the grandest of scales! Berlioz, the master. Awesome performance.
Thank you! ❤
@@WDRKlassik I was astonished by this performance by your great orchestra! Magnificent. Since I am in USA I have to enjoy these through RUclips. This is the next best thing to being there!
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words! We're happy you're enjoying our performances from overseas!
Cheers from Acapulco! BRVI TUTTI!!!! Ahhhhh, those 'Amens'........
Thank you very much for your kind words! :)
Tragico, solenne e maestoso.
berlioz assigned a fellow named habeknecht to conduct this piece at its' first performance dec 1837,at the tubum miram, the horns and drums sounding from earths 4 corners, old boy habeknecht sets down the baton, opens his snuffbox to take a few hits, berlioz out in the audience ran up to the lecturn furious at habeknecht and commenced beating time for the horn and percussion guys,,,this is ,I think,,, the greatest of the requiems The ending chords are simply gorgeous

love this performance, best-ever!
Truly a marvelous Requiem from the genius of Berlioz! Brilliant performance!
Hi, Anand!
Thank you for your kind words!
Merci beaucoup 🤗
Amazingly beautiful performance. Love how they manage the reverberanting environment to work with it not against it. The mix between instrumental sections and voices altogether are incredibly and precisely done. I can't stop listening/viewing this, congratulations to all people involved.
Thank you very much! 🤗
Excelente performance and impressionant KölnerDom
lacrimosa de Berlioz is a masterpiece
Gracias!
item of curiosity,in karajans career never did he conduct this huge and beautiful work, brahms beethoven mozart, bach, all but berlioz
The cathedral the music the orchestra the choir ,this is astonishing, again the choir wow amazing.
Thank you 😊
È impressionante tutto....il pubblico, l'ambiente, l'acustica, il coro.....
Grazie mille 🤗
Stunningly Magnificently Beautiful!!!! We need to be organizing more occasions of performing this and other of the beautiful Requiems in all parts of the World while our humanity is in so much disarray and trouble.
Stunning performance. I can see why this requiem is a favorite of so many people. Great orchestra and choir.
Thank you!
OMG. Spectacular. My new favorite rendering of the Dies Irae.
Thank you!
We are glad that you like it.
Offertorium..! Jukka-Pekka, Bravo!
I don't know if I could sing this Requiem I would be so overwhelmed emotionallyI don't think I could that's
Heard this live in Prague some years ago and was very disappointed. I wish I could have been there to hear this live - this must rank with the best performance ever.
Hi, Colin!
Thank you so mich, we are happy we can offer our recordings here for everyone.
I got to sing this in the Soprano section of a 200 voice choir, for four consecutive concerts. And if that wasn't wondrous enough - it was in Carnegie Hall, under Seiji Ozawa - when he was first starting out ! Wow. I'll never forget it ! Hearing this exceptional recording brought it all back ...
Wow! Thank you for sharing 😊
Lindíssima obra. Merece estar no Panteão das maiores obras sacras do repertório Clássico. Parabéns aos grupos instrumental e coral. Jukka e xcelente!!!!!!!
Obrigado 🤗
Oooooo I had a flash of idea,.. Couldn't the collective WE organize a Worldwide performance of this and other of these fantastic works to be performed At The SAME TIME..allover the World. We could do it, and online be simultaneous.. a unified CRY to God. Surely He will hear.
🧏♀️👂❤️❤️❤️
Truly godly. Most spiritual and deeply profund music.
Beloved child of the House...
When the four brass ensembles join in during the Dies Irae, I feel that the iconic soprano Patricia Janeckova is being welcomed into Heaven by the Almighty.
Berlioz une âme divine hautement développée !
DANS TOUTE SA PLEINITUDE. ELLE ÉTAIT MAGNIFIQUE CETTE MESSE DE BERLIOTZ..TOUT CONCORDAIT 💥💥💥💥🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊❤️❤️❤️😇🔐🙏🌟
Sublime lacrymosa!
Beautiful !!!
Thank you! 🤗
Bellissimo!!!
15:04 chills…
was it not Bs greatest work? every classical music reviewer in comparing classical era to the romantic pieces takes the fantastique as the emblem,, this mass beethoven would gave said lmasterful herr berlioz,,it continues where my ninth and the missa left off'' I have this piece on vanguard vinyl maurice abravanel condutcting utalh synph orstra in the great mormon hall w choir,a 2 record set,the best recording I have heard,,busted turntable too
I am frightened.
I like how the tenor sings from above the audience in Sanctus or how the brassists play from behind in Tuba Mirum. Unfortunately, this is something that can only really be appreciated when listening to the performance live.
WONDERFUL
Danke schoen !!!
When music sounds, everyone believes.
Played for the heroes of France that fought and died at Dien Bien Phu. Vive La France 🇫🇷
Sublime
🤗
Thanks
This is what I'm talking about!
Capolavoro
11:25 always gets me
Grandioso
Quelle admirable civilisation.

What about the Requiem that you are composing Mr Berlioz? - "It will be frightfully grandiose!"
Go *BIG* or go home!
Superb--provides the dimension missing in the Munch recording. It was written to be performed in a cathedral. Technical work is remarkable.
Thank you!
We're glad that you like our performance 😊
You could hear the residue of a genuine Faith
I’m convinced some part of his faith never died.
Oh dear lord to be there....oh my goodness...
