My mom taught music almost all of her life. (She was giving lessons at 15, and continued until she died at 86). I once asked her which requiem she would want performed when she went, and this was always her choice.

What a remarkable performance. And what a remarkable technical achievement both with the sound engineering and with the video recording, guided by wonderful direction of the very many, and very fluid, cameras. Of course while I may marvel at the technical feats, the music is of prime importance. And what a magnificent and superb performance this is. The cathedral contributes significant reverb, but the engineers have managed to capture relatively clear musical lines, while allowing the reverb to contribute to the richness of the sound. "Off-stage" musos are judiciously placed in the copious appropriate parts of the cathedral, and singers also make use of the geography of the setting. If you seek the splendour that Berlioz provides and not the minimlist approach of some conductors, come and listen with the volume up (and NOT in a mobile phone) and let the music wash over you - this is well worth it. As I said, a remarkable performance and recording.

This might be the most even-keeled, precise, and tempo-appropriate interpretation of the Berlioz Requiem I've ever come across... the brass bands are in sync during the Tuba mirum, the choir has "bite" instead of a fluffy soft choral sound, the orchestra is well balanced, soloist sounds great, Saraste is calm (instead of sweating) and keeps things moving at an early Romantic clip, and the reverb is captured beautifully. Great night to be at the cathedral!

In the time of his era (1800 and before) people had MUCH longer attention spans b/c nothing was instant. There were quite a number of very talented geniuses during that era. Mozart was another one who lived in the mid 1700's and who was an absolute genius. I believe that this requiem was for his father's funeral.

This Requiem is especially dear to me. USCLB the college I attended performed this with orchestra at a Methodist Church that had a great balcony for the brass. It was So Moving!!! There was a storm at the same time as our
performance, During the 'Tuba' section, where all the brass plays, the lights flickered and the doors were swinging open and shut.. lightening and thunder crackled,.. and as we discovered when we finished, a tornado had passed right by us, pulling up the trees on the sidewalk right next to the Church. AMAZING!!!! None of us were frightened, we were INSPIRED -- and put everything we had into our singing. Still have this work memorized.

Berlioz's music has suffered from a great deal of misunderstand over the years with his critics calling his music things like :"..the work of a tipsy chimpanzee" . Even Debussy said of him that he was a "Monster, not a musician" but works such as this and his "Symphony Fantastic" etc have proved his critics wrong.

Une larme coule sur ma joue. Il y a des Requiem et puis il y a Le Requiem de Berlioz. Mais j'aime quand même bien Fauré.

What about the Requiem that you are composing Mr Berlioz? - "It will be frightfully grandiose!"

Superb--provides the dimension missing in the Munch recording. It was written to be performed in a cathedral. Technical work is remarkable.
