I did not watch the whole video because it is 21 minutes long. I have done the trail twice. On a third occasion, as a day hiker, I became stranded on the wrong side of the river at Hanakapiai Beach due to torrential rain and had to sleep in the cave at the base of the cliffs. The thermal blanket saved me on my day hike. Fortunately I had brought one. All this said, I would pack ultralight, as Toby has done. If he did not include it I would also include the following: If you expect rainy weather, a plastic light-weight spatula. Why? Because if the trail gets washed out, you can dig out a way around, otherwise you could be stuck for some time. 2. A whistle. If you fall off a cliff you can signal. 3. Light weight, high weight bearing rope, in case you or someone falls off a cliff. - Just me.
I recommend to join the Kalalau Trail FB Group. If you do a search there you will find plenty of tips but yes it is not easy. It took me 4-5 days to get my. facebook.com/groups/47161793210
Thanks. Had to do some math from oz to lbs. Your videos on the trail are great. I am sure that your socks are NOT COTTON! Thats huge :) Smartwool is the best in my opinion.
We are hiking the trail at the end of July. We can’t find an affordable car to rent. The shuttle is still closed. How did you find a ride to the hike and back from the hike? Also, did your cell phone work from the parking lot?
Yes, finding transportation is hard. I used Randy (808) 635-9009. Owner of Kauai Rainbow Tours. No the phone dose not work at the trailhead, Ke'e Beach. Also the payphone at Ke'e is not working. You have to walk down to Haena Beach Park, another 25 min or so to get reception. Enjoy!

Great Video!
Can you please give me tips on how you got the permit? I keep trying every night online when they release but I can’t seem to get one.
Great video! Hoping to go in September- seems nearly impossible to obtain a permit, they’re sold out immediately at midnight…any tips? Thanks!
