Thanks for sharing your experience. I've got a '99 F150. Windows, windshield washer, and interior, exterior courtesy lights work intermittently. After watching what's involved, I think I'm going to try to check out the GEM contacts and clean them. See what that does. As you mentioned, in the beginning of your video, a leaky windshield might have contributed to my problem.
D Shank - Ima thinking this video will be right usefull. I done replaced it once and discovered water was coming down my column from cab lights which I siliconed and replaced a cracked windshield which didn't have a good seal. So hopefully it'll be the last gem I put in it. She's been my daily driver for 17 years and has 345k miles. 6 speed manual pulls great and will cruise down the highway at 75 all day. Thanks.
Thanks for the wisdom! I have 03 4.2 same issues no mirror no window same clicking noise. changed all my relays window motor and switch still clicking no window gonna go Gem its all thats left before i throw a brick back through window.
You got a like and a sub out of me. I'm a computer guy not a diesel truck guy but I have learned that my F350 of 2001 vintage has a GEM that won't go to sleep ergo it's drawing twice the power that it should. Local shop rates are $85 an hour and they've got to ship out my GEM for a refurbished unit and it's gonna set me back about $1400 for the 3 hour troubleshoot, reman GEM and subsequent repair/programming. I didn't know about a GEM until I had heard I had a bad one. In 5 days or so I should have my truck back. I kind of wish you were closer to me. Wish me luck. Thank you for this video.
Super helpful! I guess im still concerned about how to source a new GEM now that these trucks are 25 years old and knowing its got the right programing for my truck!
Glad I could help out. I think you're right about getting harder to source these GEM pieces as the years go by. Good news is there are still a ton of these on the road, so hopefully they will still be available for a while.
Thanks for doing a really helpful video. My cruise control quit, then the mirrors, door locks and so on. I am hoping it is the GEM, so this helps to avoid mistakes and a lot of wasted time in taking the unit out.
@Shawn Alexander my windshield has a leak too, water getting in and now my headlights don’t work regardless but parking and turn signals do - headlight brights icon stays on when they’re turned on but no headlights. Frustrating I tried the multifunction switch, headlight switch, relays, fuses. Pulled the gem and cleaned connections still can’t find anything - no headlights
@Shawn Alexander well I thought I had an issue with the horn...seems that after taking the relay in and out it started working. That’s the only other thing but it does have me wondering if my fuse box could be the problem instead of the gem. Any ideas?
Good video. If people do not have a problem with their windows and other things going wrong in the 99-03 f250, specifically the items controlled by the GEM, then they will not understand this video.
I was a Ford tech back in thr 90s until 99 Gem modules were a common issue Not only on super duty but Rangers explorers ,expeditions, ( same) and the entire lineup.. can't remember if they got a dedicated 4wd module or not after that..2001 or 02, i think?? I was in the Army then fighting for Big Oil and Boy George.😂 Your windows can all work fine, keyless entry etc. Wipers, battery saver and interiorlights will act up....but you also may not have power (5v) to your 4wd selector switch which will render your 4wd inoperable. It just depends which part of the module opens or goes bad..Hope this helps. I'm replacing a customer's right now for this very reason. .and this was an awesome video Brother! Haven't changed one since 1999 😂
I have that same sound under the dash and my horn comes on randomly along with the interior lights, radio and cargo light all with the truck off. So I have to disconnect the batteries when I park it. Maybe this will solve my issue.
Ive got an 04 f250 5.4 xl. My headlights wont shut off. I pulled the harness off the headlight switch and the mutli switch on the colom. Still on. I pulled my fuse panel and it us just full of plugs not really a module like youve got there. So is it still a GEM? I dont really have any power options. Any idea?
Aside from the three size 20 torx screws mounting the gem case to the fuse block, are there any other fasteners? Do i need to open the GEM and unscrew anything, i cant get the GEM to separate from the fuse block, dont want to force it. Nothing wrong with my GEM, except for what's wrong with all of them. I have a 2001, and the stupid buzzer when im listening to the radio and have doors open is annoying. The black wire with a pink tracer on the ignition switch is already been cut buy a previous owner. But when you turn the ignition to ACC with a door open it's buzzing. I'm going to reverse engineer the Buzzer circuit in the GEM. And disable it for the ignition, but keep the headlight buzzer. Or i might mount a buzzer on/off switch in the headlight/dome light assembly. if I'm not mistaken the buzzer is on the bottom of the gem circuit board. (After i got the fuse block and gem out, I realized, it would have been way faster to just add a new power switch on the dash and run a 12v wire to the radio so i can listen to it with doors open and ignition off.)
I have a 1997 Explorer the 4 wheel drive systems in these are notorious for computer malfunctions. What happens is the auto feature thinks the tires are slipping when they're not... and the vehicle is at high speeds... the auto kicks in the gears grind and you blow out parts of your transfer case like the range slider and shifting fork. That's probably why they decided to disengage the Auto 4 wheel drive.
I HAVE A 2000 Excursion V10 4wd and there is a battery drain i traced to the gem. I pulled the gem fuse no 20, a 15amp, and that cures the drain, its only a temporary fix i know and have to put fuse in to drive it and pull back out every time i park up. bit of a pain but the module isnt cheap and hard to source here in the UK.....
I would get a battery quick disconnect until you can solve the drain problem. Much easier to work with than removing fuse every time. I use one on my 1985 Mustang GT because it often sits for long periods...Hope this helps.
@@DrShankopotamus had one, i'd bought off Ebay, on for a week, it dipped the battery voltage down too low before disconnecting itself and when I put ignition on and pressed brake pedal I'd hear the little motor reconnect but it wouldnt give me enough juice to crank this V10 over. I think it was only rated up to 3 litres, now I know why. It maybe would've worked better if there was a switch or button to disconnect upon exiting the vehicle but it's voltage dependant and I wouldn't know how to rig the wiring to get it to work that way.....anybody any ideas?
Would the GEM help control running of the engine at all? Project RV dies after about 20 minutes of running but doesn't have power windows, mirrors, or 4wd and someone recommended replacing the GEM
Everything works on my truck, cruise control, windows, wipers, locks(by button press and key pad only). The key fob works I know, I took it to auto zone and tested it. And I can get the truck into the program mode by cycling the key 8 times but the key fob will not program. What could be my issue? HELP!!! 2006 ford f 350 king ranch.
...some magic happens around 13:30~14:00 - how did you press those big connectors back in? I'm in the midst of this right now. i'm thinking of trying to gently use a C-clamp. I think I'm going to have to go through the front ofthe opening. I'm not able to push it up from below.
I pulled it back out and fed it in through the rectangular hole the plastic cover goes over. I sprayed the board with CorrosionX and gobbed the plug openings with dielectric grease to act as a dam against future water running down the wires. I also melted some drain holes in the bottom corners to let any water out and keep it from being a swimming pool for the electronics "as designed". The grease made it like wrestling a greased pig to push it all back in there We started it up and ran it 40 miles. I bought a GEM with the same part number as listed on my SuperCrew Lariat. It seems everything works except the locks. It's my understanding that I'll have to go to a dealership to get them working with my remote fobs.
I know this is an old post but I just recently purchased an 2000 f250 V10 and I have no dash lights, OD light won't work and no 4x4 indicator lights working so 4x4 won't engage. Any idea what it might be advise would be really appreciated
Sorry for the delayed reply. Hope you were able get it fixed. As i recall, the GEM controls a ton of stuff, and that could be your problem. There is a problem with water leaking at the bottom of the windshield. If this was bad on your F250 it could have damaged wiring in the dash. Good luck.
@DrShankopotamus all you had to do was clean your contact ends on each port and each cable end with electronics contact cleaner and a brush and lightly sand and lightly as evverrrr twist each pin!
Did this fix your truck and what where your symptoms? Or was the 4x4 your only issue.... Im getting a terrible battery drain and flashing interior lights /and clicking relays... im gonna check my fuse box for corrosion first ... before replacing the GEM
The new GEM fixed the problems completely. I'm still not sure what the previous owner was bypassing or how they figured it out to keep the windows working. They apparently sacrificed auto 4WD switching for the power windows. I show in the video how they had grounded out the switch for the 4WD. It all started with trying to finally get my auto 4WD switch working again. Go figure...
My 2000 F150 4x4 had the leaking windshield. I replaced the windshield as I was having the flashing dash lights, sometimes the blower motor would run, and my windows could go up and down with the power off and key removed with the drivers door open. I also had an issue where my turn signals stopped working along with the ABS light came on and my overhead console (temp and compass) quit working at the same time. I also lost my dash fan setting, air conditioning, and other annoyances. I am trying to locate a replacement GEM now. I fully expect it to fix all of my issues from the research I have done.
I got it online from a Ford dealer. I don’t recall exactly which one. I did bing search and went by price. I got it from a dealer to make sure it was genuine Ford.
I'd like to ask if you had a problem with your dash being completely dead, or going dead with no instruments working as this is my issue. Truck will still run but no gauges work. I changed my gear shift selector with new also.
How did you fix it. I have the same problem my overdrive button knob pulled out of the shifter, the wire & knob pulled out, and when I tried to put the wire back in, I got a spark and the entire instrument panel went dead. Checked each and every fuse and found none foul. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
I just changed the gem & I also changed the shift lever before that with updated wiring as they say that’s an issue My only problem now is 4x4 is not lighting up & have to trace that but the replacement Gem has 2 letters at the end of part # that’s not the same 🤷🏻♂️
All of my issues was the wiring in the shifter for the overdrive off switch. It’s brand new from ford I left it unplugged as I don’t care for the OD switch No more issues!!!!!
As I recall, I didn't have trouble with all the gauges going dark. Since the GEM controls so many different things I wouldn't be surprised if it were the culprit.
Could you please let me know if there’s 3 plugs on the side going in to Gem? I could only find 2 & I looked everywhere, I took it out & waited a long time for new unit to come & now I can’t remember, I took it apart and could not find a third grey plug
Sorry, i don't recall exactly and i have since sold the 2000 and replaced it with same truck for 2016...A few 2016 videos are on the way. Thanks for watching.
So I have a ESOF super duty that no longer works. Will not shift any way. Into or out of 4x4. There is also a drain on the battery which started at the exact time my 4x4 stopped engaging t-case. I have also had flashing lights on the dash in the past as well. Does this all sound like GEM issues? I should mention that t-case motor has been changed out and relays for the 4x4 system.
It might be the GEM...I would check for any blown fuses/relays or shorts in the wring first. If you have a bad short you could damage a new GEM and all your work is in vain. Good luck.
I have the same issue! When I try to program a fob, it goes thru the cycle but does not signal to program the fob. Have you replaced the GEM? Did it fix the issue? Debating on doing this...
My gem is 22 years old and when I pulled it it was dusty..fine dust ..Most people asked if I had water intrusion when I told them my blower was on without a key and my blinkers worked also and the 5 speed aod trans stopped shifting out of 2nd with speed sensor codes ... I drove the truck to work fine ..went out after 7 hours and the blower motor was on .... I freaked out thinking the key switch was engaged ... No it is off ...Ghost in my truck ...Weirdest symptoms.. Then a friend told me dude its your gem module... I had my f250 Sd for 22 years and this is the second freak thing to happen... The other is .. The instrument cluster controls the alternator.. 500$ + part ... You think hey I got a bad alternator with a bad voltage regulator ... No pal you need a Instrument cluster from the factory with certified mileage... So the Gem Module and the Instrument cluster get my vote as Top two weirdest breakdowns ..ever .
@@YXEFlatl1ne replaced speed sensor in the rear dif, that solved the trans not shifting , replaced the fuse box and fuses with a rebuilt box, that solved the electrical issues . I also replaced the ignition switch as a good measure. The gem module was not the problem ..
GEM stands for Generic Electronic Module. Vehicles since about 1996 have many computers and sensors in them, I'm not criticizing DrShankopotamus, but you can waste an enormous amount of money trying to fix electronic problems this way. There was a time when you could shoot the old "parts cannon" at a problem, maybe in the 70's and 80's, but from 1996 until today you SHOULD NOT start buying parts and hope you fix the problem. Fuses, relays, GEM, where does it stop? It's all about diagnostics now a days. There's miles of wire in vehicles and a broken wire may be all that's wrong with your car or truck. Just losing a ground through a broken wire can disable 40 or 50 things the GEM or RAP does. If you're not handy with a $20. digital multimeter from Walmart don't spend $200. on a GEM.
@@bentnickel7487 I'm with you! Ford is telling me my GEM is out, I have asked them to check wiring for aftermarket headlight, turn signals are not working and my battery is being drain from somewhere. Any thoughts
My 2000 F-550 looks worse than yours when it comes to dirt. I wondered if maybe it was a flood vehicle. But now after seeing yours I know i'm not alone.
I wondered the same myself and did some research. I wasn’t able to find anything pointing to flooding...but I sure got a lotta dirt in a lotta places...

The GEM controls almost all things electrical. So many things can malfunction or just stop functioning at all when it goes bad. I recall there were a few other things that started working properly too...
I don't think I replaced a ground wire and it seems to be working well...However, which ground do you think would be the culprit and I'll check it out. The only large ground to the motor that I can find appears to be intact...thanks for the feedback.
Fanagle for me is sorta like cheese...it’s almost impossible to have too much...and just the opposite of shenanigans, which seems to exist everywhere in an over abundance. Thanks for watching!
I've been working on doing that...Thanks for the input. I just keep it on a bit too loud when I'm just fixin stuff without video and I forget to turn it down. Thanks for watching.

I left it unplugged as I don’t care for the OD switch
No more issues!!!!!
As I recall, I didn't have trouble with all the gauges going dark. Since the GEM controls so many different things I wouldn't be surprised if it were the culprit.
How must did it cost
Good luck.
@@DrShankopotamus Thanks for the reply man.
Ok so I’ve been looking everywhere and can’t find nothing but when I try to program and fob my locks do not cycle?
I have the same issue! When I try to program a fob, it goes thru the cycle but does not signal to program the fob. Have you replaced the GEM? Did it fix the issue? Debating on doing this...
What ford dealer online?
Stupid question, but would it be obvious is there was a leak around the windshield?
Not always. But usually you can see water in the front floor beneath the dash after heavy rain.
Just replaced mine and my speedometer dont work when it worked before HELP!!!!!
How many of those grey connectors are there on the side
It's been so long ago...I don't recall...Thanks for watching.
What was it???
@@YXEFlatl1ne replaced speed sensor in the rear dif, that solved the trans not shifting , replaced the fuse box and fuses with a rebuilt box, that solved the electrical issues . I also replaced the ignition switch as a good measure. The gem module was not the problem ..
Is the GEM the computer? thanks for the video by the way
GEM stands for Generic Electronic Module. If you're not handy with a $20. digital multimeter from Walmart don't spend $200. on a GEM.
Bent Nickel thank you sir
@@bentnickel7487 I'm with you! Ford is telling me my GEM is out, I have asked them to check wiring for aftermarket headlight, turn signals are not working and my battery is being drain from somewhere. Any thoughts

Where did you get the GEM?
From a Ford dealing online...Don't recall exactly which one....

A. Cuestión. That can affect that the truck. Does not start.
Was the door pad code on the sticker on gem module
The bolts will pull the. Plugs in. Slowly line up and screw bolts in cant force it i have done many. No room.
I noticed the door chime when you turned the ignition on worked in the end of video after you replaced it...
The GEM controls almost all things electrical. So many things can malfunction or just stop functioning at all when it goes bad. I recall there were a few other things that started working properly too...
So the ground probably from the chassie to motors rotten away..
I don't think I replaced a ground wire and it seems to be working well...However, which ground do you think would be the culprit and I'll check it out. The only large ground to the motor that I can find appears to be intact...thanks for the feedback.
550$ for new gem. Programmed. Not cheap
Zippo Lighters
where did u get yours from?
I think i need more fanagle
Fanagle for me is sorta like cheese...it’s almost impossible to have too much...and just the opposite of shenanigans, which seems to exist everywhere in an over abundance. Thanks for watching!
You need a fresh can of "shutup and just do it."
Love your video, very helpful but please turn your radio off first!
I've been working on doing that...Thanks for the input. I just keep it on a bit too loud when I'm just fixin stuff without video and I forget to turn it down. Thanks for watching.
I appreciate you video but you cut out the info I needed wtf. I cant get the damn thing out of the hole there’s no room. Thanks. You guys gotta show the real pia shot to.
Sorry...As I recall, it was just too tight to get a shot in there, but I think I tried explain it a little in the video...or maybe i forgot.
My box makes a click noise
