@@bosssavage3325 You gotta understand that they are working with 20 year old code AND trying to support now 2 versions of that 20 year old code in the same code. To me that sounds incredibly difficult. Changing code in one place could affect a lot of other code at this point.
All changes in Era are a violation of the promise that was made to us Era players when we started playing here. Simply said, do.not.touch.Era!
People paid $20 to clone their characters based on that very promise.

They came out with a blue post two days after they realized they messed up… they double downed and acted as if these changes were intended.
Not only is this modern development team incompetent, they are liars and think you are stupid.

Yeah same. My voidwalker was out when I logged off before patch and was the only pet who changed when the servers came back up, so I thought the bug was caused by me having that pet out. However, a few days later the rest of my pets changed and their skills back to level 1

People paid money to live in Era forever as it was. So Blizz doesn’t respect customers. They can’t develop new products worthwhile and the make shift Classic dev team seems to have no one with player experience on the team.

Also, it wasn't necessary to pay. You didn't have to keep that character on classic and also have the same character to progress in TBC

Druids should have always been able to use polearms. If you look at the original shipping manual for WoW, Druids were listed as being able to use "spears". Spears were combined into "polearms" when the game shipped. Hunters in the original manual were only listed as being able to use "spears" also, not "polearms". So that is them giving druids what they should have always had.

This is blizzards mask off moment when it comes to classic. They begrudgingly catered to us but only as a means to an end. They detest the fans' love of classic because they dont know how to recreate it. Instead their mission is clearly to subvert the playerbase and drag them towards retail style game mechanics. This is them saying we hate classic we've always hated classic, play this instead.
I honestly can't decide what's worse. Them knowingly doing these changes or what seems to be the prevailing theory in that SOD and classic era sharing a client has massively fucked things up and now they're trying to play it off like it was intended.
They spent time and resources to make the game worse. Incredible

I posted a much longer explanation but for a quick TDLR on why I believe they did this: the vulnerabilities in classic/SoD/hardcore were so egregious (imagine a "hacker" having full access to warden on each client's PC or whatever blizzard's modern equivalent is called, and a "hacker" being anyone who belongs to one of a handful of certain discords or anyone willing to dig deep enough through sketchy wow hacker community forums to find the buried treasure). The "omg players can fly and go underground" exploits are equivalent to hunters/warlocks naming their pets with foreign characters compared to how intrusive the MOST serious vulnerabilities in the game were/are.
This explains a few things: alliance equivalent of warchief's blessing, undispellable world buffs, druid polearms, all reasonable changes. But not changes anyone asked for...a bit strange but maybe still above board.
However, bringing Cata's guild UI to classic? Not a reasonable change in my opinion. I prefer the classic UI, Xaryu and Asmongold both agree...hmm ok, that one is interesting, now my alarm bells begin to ring, they probably aren't telling us everything. I just watched this video and learned that many more undocumented changes have been discovered, likely many more will be discovered in the near future....now the alarms are not just a fire drill, some aspect(s) of these changes were done for purposes that Blizzard didn't want to disclose. But why?
So that they could patch (HOPEFULLY) a majority of the games most serious vulnerabilities. Why wouldn't they say so then? That's a good thing right...?
Because if you knew how serious these vulnerabilities were/are, you'd be so disgusted that a once-legendary company like Blizzard could take your $15 a month knowing they were exposing their customers to an unprecedented degree of compromise to privacy and security, you might cancel your sub, wipe your hard drive clean and reinstall the OS to be certain there wasn't a trace of blizzard software remaining, and vow to never give blizzard another nickel as long as you live. In which case you'd have done exactly what I did.
I love osrs but there are no classes in osrs. In wow you’ll just get everyone acting in their classes’ best interest.

There are a few things I'd like them to change. Never change anything that messes with gameplay, but things like the Calendar would be really nice for setting up events and raids.
now you cant logout skip to get to the front of raid instances... awesome i have to die repeatably unless players come out and clear a path for me.
with infinite chronoboons you can get infinite stormwind buffs LOLOLOL

What's even more interesting is it seems to jump forward in time, so this wasn't just a couple extra sentences that happened to be included when the editor cut the video, this final clip was cherry-picked and added. I suspect despite the comment's wording being a bit ambiguous (sloppy tbh), the editor was able to get the gist of the comment and probably agreed, as do I.
I believe the chatter meant: "The devs didn't intend for classic's migration into cata to impact era, they just couldn't find a way to decouple them".
IMO the chatter is pretty close, except there was never an attempt or an intention to decouple this change from classic's move to cata. This patch was a major update which obviously changed far more than the handful of changes listed in the patch notes. It was a sort of reverse-torjan-horse, where they disguised some major underlying overhaul(s) as being some straight-forward QoL/Balance adjustments. Except these overhauls weren't malicious like the trojan horse, they were security fixes. See my other 2 comments for more details.
Classic wow was an experience you had to be there to fully appreciate it. Going from dota 1 and seeing more than 4 skill moves on the hot bar was surreal. Everyone was lost and finding their way. This was before thottbot took off. That ship has sailed and those memories cannot be recreated in modern times.

I doubt young players even know or care enough to search for addons... they just can't be bothered if they're not spoonfed the content... in exchange of some microtransactions to make it faster ofc :))

I can confirm, most of Blizz team just had a lobotomy, so can't blame them!
My Fel Hunter spells disappeared every time I logged off and had to buy the skills again which cost like 5g. As far as why they went to the Cata client for era, I believe they did that for Classic plus going forward. It likely makes life easier on them. Which is why they didnt say anything to us.
The 1 second guild chat delay is driving me nuts.
The most annoying part for me so far is the 1 second delay between sending a message and it showing up in gchat. This is a social game and in 2024, there is no reason for that delay to exist.
I feel like the only changes that are talked about are actually improvements, besides the guild tab and druid polearms. Why is nobody talking about the fact, that the removal of logout skips kills certain dungeon runs??

For me personally i would love if era was used for classic+, I think the new rend buff for alliance is a perfect addition. However, I respect ppl who would feel like their favorite version of wow basically got overwritten.

I have unsubscribed from the game with a message urging Blizzard to revert these changes. I signed the petition and donated some of my money. I have commented on Wowheads' post and on the original blue post on the blizzard forums. I have tweeted at the developers and game directors as well as Blizzards original accounts, I have made tickets in game. No response from them in a week anywhere. I'm not expecting to have answers personally but to not have any response anywhere suggests Blizzard is laying low, either waiting for us to forget or hopefully working on reverting these changes.
1. Old guild UI is way simpler and less invasive as to how much screen space it takes up.
2. Buffs being dispellable is what builds faction friction, which is good.
3. Warchief's Blessing is a balancing tool for factions. With equal buffs like this there is even less reason to play Horde.
4. I have no argument about polearms for druids other than the "where does it stop"-worry.
Changes belong in Seasons and "OSRS"-servers.
The major point IMO is that Blizzard can't be trusted to make good decisions, as evidenced by so much in SoD, so it's better they don't make any at all. Also, having seen the progression from original Cataclysm when I started playing to now, and then seeing the changes that were made in TBC and Wrath (through the Classic lense) makes it so obvious to see why Blizzard should not be allowed to make changes.
Also, Classic WoW is not about nostalgia for me as I never played back in the early to mid 2000's. I played first in 2019, and right away I saw that it's just simply and obviously a great game.
Wondering if weapon procs work on druids in forms since MANY polearms have some proc based dmg on em, and if it doesn't work, why make it even available for druids 🤔
The reason most people including myself are upset is because of the slippery slope. Where does it stop? If it just stops here I can live with it tbh, as you said not the biggest deal and I kind of like that change to WBs. And even the guild tab has some benefits like being able to read messages when you logged out. (still prefer old UI).
Here are some
- my warlock pets all lost their learned abilities
- mage T2 set lost textures
- items such as bandages/mounts sometimes cant be used: says item not found
- rain of fire instant cast
- drinking often gets interupted for no reason
- water textures sometimes gone for a split second
- some SoD quest can be done in classic now
I'm pretty sure most of these things happened due to changes on P4 SoD, and not intentionally.
The developers themselves said it's very hard to do these implementation on SoD due to it being tied to Era.
It is very likely whenever they do something like this in SoD, they need to make a code to block the interaction in Era.

@@Larky90 then why not have separate servers for SoD and Era?... oh I know why... they're slowly going bankrupt and can't afford the upkeep for their stable moneymaking server which is Era... they tried recreating the initial succes but it's the same as monkey see, monkey do... they do not have the talent or attention to detail to even attempt making something as refined as Classic, instead they just rush out "cool" graphics with retcon stories that didn't bother to even read before creating their own...
I know some people including content creators are very supportive about these types of changes! I hope it does actually bring in more players.
I don’t like them, and I won’t be playing classic or sod anymore, but I’ll be checking in from the sidelines to see how the classic wow universe evolves from here!

The beauty of classic era was know that NO ONE would ruin the game. Not the developer, and not even the players could ruin it because it wasn't going to get changes. This sets the precedent of changes. Especially when blizzard does it so flippantly.

I dont think horde players realize how much ally help with dropping buffs on their side for sake of Mind controlling it. Mix that with a 1 minute cooldown and horde is going to be real dry on rend drops in a few months.

All company's eventually figure out ways to introduce monetising their games with pressure from the suits above, Jagex have fended off so many potential buyers because they all wanted to convert osrs into a cash cow and honestly it looks that is what's happening and been happening in wow classic for a while and now its coming to SoD / Seasons. It wont be long before every one is back on private servers if they keep this crap up.
BTW those kind of patches are called shadow patch notes, they are not on the official notes for damage control reasons. Another type of hidden patch is called ninja nerf.
Correct , the patch notes were vague and I suspect purposely omitted the majority of the changes for damage control. Ironically, if you were aware of the severity of security vulnerabilities in these clients you already quit, and I see so many comments here to the effect of "changes?! I quit..."
For at least a year, Blizzard has been charging customers 15 dollars to expose them to what is probably the most severe, intrusive vulnerability they've ever encountered on the internet. (I've been on the internet since before America Online, and I say that without a shred of hyperbole). If players knew half as bad as it was/is, the company would probably be bankrupt.
Fixes like this one were overdue 8 months ago, it was criminal negligence to let it continue this long. I'll never install another piece of Blizzard software, so as curious as I am I can't personally verify what, if anything, has been fixed.
But for the people who want to continue playing this game, you should be overjoyed they finally took action to fix some of these vulnerabilities.

Changes with no communication is just awfully disrespectful toward the community, and these changes are probably a hint they are going to change more things in future
People saying logout skips are stupid in the first place are kinda stupid themselves, because what they don’t seem to realize is, that this also affects dungeons. You will get ported to your hearthstone location, and it uses your hearthstone CD, if you reset a dungeon with an alt for instance. This effectively kills a lot of dungeon farms and runs like BRD emp runs. You have to die now and run back to get to the beginning again, as you cannot just walk back, especially if you did a lava run. Mara princess runs are also pretty much dead, DM east lasher farm dead. All dungeon runs, where you basically can’t just run to the entrance (without it taking an ungodly amount of time) are dead.
