A good Christmas movie! Another four are Christmas In Connecticut (1945), Miracle On 34th Street (1947), It Happened On 5th Avenue (1947) and A Christmas Carol (1951) aka Scrooge in the UK. Just some personal favourites.
The little girl who played DEBBIE in this film played little ZUZU in "It's a Wonderful Life." And the boy who said Debbie couldn't throw a snowball as far as he could spit played Young George Baily.
Two of the child actors were also in It's a Wonderful Life, filmed the year before. The daughter here was Zuzu Bailey, and the mean kid throwing snowballs played a young George Bailey.
Madison, you're getting deep into my annual Christmas watch list with this one!!! Please consider "Holiday Affair" with Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh. It's a fun Christmas romance.
I agree with the recommendation of "Holiday Affair". I watched it for the 2nd time last week (I first found the movie last Xmas). It's another delightful old film!
Madison, a movie you should eventually check out is The Man Who Came to Dinner (1941) which stars Monty Woolley, the actor who played the professor. It's a fun movie that has an all star cast that includes Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan and Jimmy Durante , that could be classified as a romantic (screwball) comedy with many twists and turns.
I have been waiting for many a Christmas season for someone to react to this special movie, which will ever bring a tear to my eye. When my mother passed away, I recalled what Dudley says about the cab driver: "...his children and his children's children shall rise up and call him blessed..." Looking the phrase up, I was unsurprised to find it a paraphrase of a Bible verse, Proverbs 31:28. I then used the Biblical citation as the anchor point of my eulogy for her.
Cary Grant got his start in comedy, first with a circus in Great Britain, then in Hollywood. Two of his best, in the screwball comedy genre, are "Bringing up Baby", and "His Girl Friday".
I just recently rewatched Bringing Up Baby and for some reason didn't enjoy it as much as I did when I was younger. I can still rewatch My Girl Friday and Arsenic and Old Lace over and over again.
This has always been one of my favorite Christmas movies, but no one ever seems to know about it. It's been completely ignored by RUclips Reactors, until now. Bravo to you for reacting to a movie that deserves much more recognition. You just got another subscriber. I'm watching this on Christmas Day, so Merry Christmas to you!
Thank you for watching this wonderful Christmas movie. I notice in the comments that there are suggestions for " Christmas Carol," (1951) in which Alistair Sim gives the definitive performance as Scrooge. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is scarier, funnier, and more Dickensian than any other version.
i love Alistair sims films he never fails to make me smile .particularly in his Ealing comedies like School For Scoundrels ,best days of your life and of course the st trinnian films
Three other great older Christmas movies are: "The Shop Around the Corner" starring Jimmy Stewart (the inspiration for "You've Got Mail"). "Christmas in Connecticut" starring Barbara Stanwick. A great scre-ball comedy. "It Happened on 5th Avenue". A heart warming comedy.
It took a while for me to discover this movie but it's become one of my favorites. And, for me, the ice skating scene is the most sublime - in a film that has more than one.
Nice choice! This was once a staple of the holiday movie lineup, but is becoming forgotten. I also completely agree with @terenzo50. This is especially true of A Christmas Carol (1951). This is absolutely the greatest adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Please do this one. No one else has.
Another classic film I try to watch every Xmas Eve. Alistair Sim was a wonderful Actor. If you have not seen it yet, you should watch the 1950 Comedy/Drama (The Happiest Days of Your Life). He stars in it alongside Margaret Rutherford & Joyce Grenfell. :)
Very happy to watch you review this movie, it's a real gem! I've always loved this movie! My favorite character is the professor! He's much more perceptive than he gives himself credit for. He knew there was much more to Dudley than most could see. Also, this movie has a connection to my other favorite Christmas movie. The young boy that gets hit with the snowball played the young George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life"!
A wonderful reaction to one of my favorite Christmas movies! Dudley helps everyone get back to their best selves. The bishop got lost in outward signs of success, but at the cost of almost losing what he loved, and the real goods a Christian should pursue. The widow was lost in feelings of guilt and loneliness over lost love. It's interesting that Dudley is able to use our human desires and refocus them back onto their right ends. It's so well written and acted to bring out these depths with a light touch. Legendary playwright and screenwriter Robert Sherwood wrote the novel and worked as screenwriter. A four time Pulitzer prize winner and an Academy Award Winner.
Madison, thanks for viewing this one. My mother passed away over Thanksgiving weekend, and this will be our first Christmas without her. Mom LOVED this movie (maybe she swooned over Cary Grant too) but of all the holiday movies this touched her heart more than others. Thanks for sharing and bringing back good memories from the past. A good one that needs to be seen by many this and every holiday season.
Wonderful Film, one of our favorites. A side note, the older boy at the snowball fight was the boy that played the young Jimmy Stewart that Mr. Gower slapped in "It's a Wonderful Life" and the child of the Bishop and Julia was Zuzu (as in Zuzu's petals).
This is my all time favorite. Cary Grant's skating double was Eugene Turner, a U.S skating champion. The World War prevented Turner from skating in the Olympics. During the war Turner was a P-47 pilot with over 60 missions against the Luftwaffe. I advise you watch "His Girl Friday" with Cary Grant, Rosaland Russell, and Ralph Bellamy. It's one of the all time great comedies.
Oh girl, you are missing out on the Cary Grant movies! The Awful Truth, Holiday, His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Arsenic and Old Lace, (Hitchcock's) Notorious, To Catch a Thief (also Hitchcock), An Affair to Remember, Charade...those are a start. 😆 But first things first: The Shop Around the Corner is one of the most darling movies of all time, and my favorite Christmas movie, even beating out It's a Wonderful Life. You must watch it.
Loretta Young's son, Peter Lewis, was in a famous rock and roll band in the 60's. His daughter, Arwen Lewis, is taking her turn in the family business (show business), plying the trade as a singer.
Moby Grape. Their debut album is a 5-star masterpiece, covering just about every genre of American music in perfect 3-minute bursts, each one catchier than the last
I was so thrilled when I saw this film pop up Madison! One of my absolute favorite Christmas classics, such a terrific heartwarming story. Something about the black & white films of the golden era, they just seem to have more sincerity & genuine storylines. The script was good, great casting & even today it can resonate. Yeah, I always wished I had Cary Grant’s magnetic charm, he was always so debonair. Really enjoyed your commentary, you gave great insight & picked up on the deeper meanings woven in between the main story. Hope you do more classics & if I could suggest a couple: “Christmas in Connecticut”, “The Shop Around the Corner” & “The Bells of St. Mary’s…each is simply fantastic!
This is a very entertaining movie. I second the recommendation of watching the little shop around the corner. It's a yet another forgotten gem. This was another great reaction, Madison. Thank you and I hope that you Enjoy your holiday season.
This film is an excellent example that with all stories, whether Spoken, Written, or Filmed, it always comes down to the writing. If the writing is good, all else can be forgiven or overlooked. Of course, to be a good writer, requires far more than a large vocabulary, or being able to string sentences together in a clever way. Being able to communicate well is important, but more important is having something important to *Communicate*.
In my top three Christmas movies of all time. Such a gentle, loving story with sweet characters right down to the smallest part. I adore the professor and his simple acceptance of the supernatural nature of his new friend. Sensitive performances by everyone top to bottom and a treasure trove of fabulous character actors filling out the perfect cast. All of them are familiar to me because I grew up watching each of them in dozens of movies filling out the casts of famous and not so famous films. Look a few up, for instance Elsa Lanchester who played the Bride in the original Bride of Frankenstein in 1935. Thanks so much 😊
I'm 67 years old and I first watched this movie about 55 years ago and it made such a profound impact upon me and I never forgot it...I love watching the wonderful actors of the day that I admired so much then and still do now in such a wonderful feel good movie...Movies such as this always had a life lesson or meaning behind it for us to remember for the rest of our lives...another great reaction to a great movie from my childhood... Good job, Madison...Keep being awesome !!!...
This film coming out just 2 years after the end of WW2, was a welcome balm for everyone as they were healing from losses, grief, pain and readjusting to the world as it now existed.
Loretta Young was such a beauty! She was Marlo Thomas' Godmother. The actress playing Mrs. Hamilton, Gladys Cooper, also portrayed Bette Davis' mean old mother in "Now Voyager" from 1941. As you can still tell in 1947, she was a beauty queen around age 19.
I love watching your reaction. Your comments and emotions seem very genuine and you have really good thoughts in your sum up. Another often overlooked holiday film is "Remember the Night"(1940). Starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray.
Excellent reaction and review of this classic movie. You have accurately captured the essence of what this 1947 morality tale was trying to convey. You probably know that there was a 1996 version called 'The Preacher's Wife', starring Denzel Washington in the role Cary Grant played and Whitney Houston as the wife and Courntey B. Vance as the Bishop. Personally I prefer the original, but it's probably because of my general disdain for remakes, especially if they are remakes of classic movies, which I find to be heresy! In any case, it might be worth watching, if only to compare the two very different historical and societal circumstances in which they were both shot..., and also to enjoy one of Whitney Houston's few acting roles.
@@michaeldmcgee4499 I would say the remake of Ben Hur in 1959 is better than the ones in 1907 and 1925. But that's the only one I can think of. You're right about 99% of them.
You guys are not letting your imagination loose. How about the 1976 remake of King Kong with Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges. How about the remake of Godzilla. The remake of The Ten Commandments. On and on! There are many remakes superior to the originals! Think out loud! Peace out...
One of my three favorite Christmas movies. The other two being "One Magic Christmas" and "It's a Wonderful Life." I love your reaction to it. You are very perceptive.
I am so glad taht you apreciate this movie because it is not only one of my favorite Christmas movies it is one of my favorite movies. You have such a deep insight to this movies.
A very nice reaction Madison. I'm an old guy (77), I haven't been to a movie theater in 20 years. Why should I when we have classics like this, no nudity, no profanity, no explosions and loud noise. And no silly plots from "stars" who many have never heard of. This movie and movies of this period are something the whole family can enjoy. El Mirage Land and Cattle Company El Mirage, Arizona
I love this movie as well. The first time I watched it, I had known of Cary Grant, but not of Loretta Young, so this introduced me to her. She had such a genuine, loving, infectious smile on her face throughout the entire movie. I've sought out other movies she was in, but none (IMHO) could match her performance in this movie. Also, Sylvester, the taxi driver, had to be a very good ice skater in real life to be able to stumble and act so clumsily on ice skates while staying on his feet. I think he was put into this movie to showcase his ability on skates.
Lovely to watch your reaction! Briefly, the beautiful dogs name "is" told as Julia opens the front door at beginning ...Queenie. That said, most of the reviews do NOT show the amount of footage you brought forth .Wonderful! Wasn't sure if you knew Cary Grant was originally cast to play the role of bishop! He asked to switch after reading script. Also, so sad but the bishop played marvelously from( David Niven ) had lost his wife shortly before filming, Hats off to his fine performance. Unsure if you recognized any spiritual aspects. Wasn't sure if you knew angel guided the boys back to St Timothy;s. Note how he knows every ones name without being informed. The supporting cast is outstanding...,even little Debbie! Hats off to you for watching. So many overlook because of its age & lack of color. This fit Cary Grant so perfectly. Cannot imagine any- one other. What a fine review!!!Thank you!!!👼🌌🏆😊🎬
In danger of forming attachments... OMG!!! Angels are actually Jedi!!! LOL!!! Merry Christmas Madison!!! Love your reaction!!! This is one of my favorite Christmas movies!!!
Thanks Madison for another wonderful reaction to this classic movie, The Bishop's Wife - so beautifully shot, scripted and performed by a stellar cast. Great to see two of my favourite character actors of the period, Monty Woolley and James Gleason, playing relatively small but impactful roles in the film. Agree with other comments that recommend The Shop Around the Corner and Scrooge (1951). Another minor masterpiece with "Heavenly" themes that you may consider is Here Comes Mr Jordan with Robert Montgomery. Thanks again; keep the great reactions. You are the best in the business, by a long stretch.
Merry Christmas Madison! I’m from a much earlier era than you, and l very much enjoy your appreciation of the earlier classics. The Bishop’s Wife is actually my favorite holiday film, and l am delighted that you like it too
Some may find older films as this corny at times or too sappy, but I find them more genuine, more inspirational. Same goes for Christmas music, I rather listen to the old classics than some newer artists trying to put their own spin on it, it just comes across too commercial too crass for me. I also recommend as others have "The Shop Around the Corner", i watch that one every year.
This was great, Madison! Personally, I always prefer the old classic Christmas movies to celebrate Christmas season, just as I usually prefer old-timey Christmas music to more contemporary Christmas tunes. There's just something so right, timeless, and sincere about them that I don't think most modern movies or music can compete.
An interesting film that takes place at Christmas, is The Lion In Winter with Peter O'Toole and Kate Hepburn. I highly recommend it even though Christmas provides the setting and is not truly the focus.
Love this movie! It’s a rare one that has a good remake, check out The Preacher’s Wife from the 1990s with Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston. Another great one with Loretta Young is The Farmer’s Daughter, very unique story for the era and she is charming as always.
Hi Madison, thankyou, for being the first reactor of those I watch, to react to this wonderful Xmas film. I discovered it myself 10 + Yrs ago & have tried to watch it on Xmas Eve every year since. I have requested it a few times with several reactors because I wanted to see someone react to it. But also because I wanted to share my discovery with younger people, so they could continue to enjoy it for longer than I have managed too. Thanks again, I hope more people get to enjoy it as I have. :)
The actress who plays Matilda is Elsa Lanchester, she played in the Bride of Frankenstein. She was married to another great actor, Charles Laughton. Must see his films.
A wonderful reaction and one of my annual Christmas movie watches my mom super busy raising 5 of us all by herself use to make time to watch this every year making special time for herself which was rare thank you for a heartfelt Christmas reaction have a great christmas time❤
People are “Perfected” by facing temptation, being tempted and making the decision not to give in to it. Or failing, suffering the consequences and learning from the experience.
I loved your reaction to this beautiful film, Madison. A good film for you to react to at any time is, 'Heavens Above!' 1963 starring Peter Sellers, it's a comedy which deals with important issues, in a similar way to The Bishop's Wife.
I’m particularly fond of the supporting characters stories, the Professor and the rich woman and the cab driver… all brilliant actors throughout. David Niven is very good in A Matter of Life And Death made about the same time with heavenly goings on ☺️☺️☺️
Archibald Leach was the greatest actor Hollywood ever knew - he played Cary Grant so well, the entire world bought the act! This is one of my favorites. Dudley brings out the very best in everyone. Some of my other fave C.G. films include THE BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY-SOXER (1947) with a teenage Shirley Temple, TO CATCH A THIEF (1955) a Hitchcock film with Grace Kelly, OPERATION PETTICOAT (1959) on a submarine with Tony Curtis, and FATHER GOOSE (1964) shipwrecked with Leslie Caron.
Great reaction, Madison. This is a wonderful movie, unfortunately overlooked as a Holiday classic. One of my family’s favorites. (Ok, and Cary Grant, too😉.)
The lady playing Matilda, Elsa Lancaster, was a great actress and later played a nanny leaving the job after one day in the 1964 Mary Poppins movie, in which Mary Poppins quicky took her place,
Elsa Lanchester was a big star. She was married to super star Charles Laughton, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and was The Bride of Frankenstein. What delights they were on stage and in films in Great Britain and America. And on What's My Line.
There’s a 90’s remake of this film called The Preacher’s Wife. It’s a nice version with Denzel Washington as Dudley and Whitney Houston as Julia. I love this version best though. Thanks for sharing and for your commentary.
I really like this Old Hollywood Big Studio Era Picture. This is one of the films I traditionally make it a point to view around this time of the year. Great reaction, BTW. I am really liking your style. Keep em coming. Shoutout from East Tennessee. Happy Holidays. See you on the next. Peace. Later.
Great reaction, Madison! Great edit. This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies. After I watched this, I wanted to be Cary Grant. Loretta Young is beautiful. My favorite character, however, is the professor. I love his little apartment. ❤
Another , little-known Christmas themed film is "Susan Slept Here," starring Debbie Reynolds (Carrie Fisher's mom). It also stars Dick Powell, Red Skelton, and other Hollywood notables. It is sweet and funny told dromedary the viewpoint of an "infamous Hollywood icon."
Oh, here's a Christmas movie almost nobody knows about, but is a true gem. One of the VERY few Comedies Humphrey Bogart was ever in- 1955's "We're no Angels", along with Peter Ustinov & Aldo Ray, it's a story about 3 convicts who escape from prison in 1895, from Devil's Island & the interesting situations they get into.
Matilda was played by Elsa Lanchester who was the Bride of Frankenstein among other things. She is also in one of my favorite comedies called Murder by Death. You should check it out.
Hi Madison, just watched your reaction to The Bishop's Wife. Really glad you liked it so much. It's always been one of my favorite Christmas movies. I'm a huge fan of older movies. Love Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, etc. I have a suggestion about another movie that you may or may not have heard of. Bell, Book and Candle ....1958 Stars Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak, set around Christmas too. Lastly, if you want more Cary Grant try: To Catch a Thief, Operation Petticoat, The Philadelphia Story, Father Goose and I was a Male War Bride.....the list goes on. Love your reactions! Take Care.
Perfect observation that movies like this are low key, but the script and acting are top notch. This one is on my perfect movie list. I agree that Queenie is a scene stealer, my family had a short hair St. Bernard who was also a scene stealer! 😀
Great reaction to a wonderful movie, if you haven't seen it "Christmas in Connecticut " starring Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, S.Z. Zakall,Sydney Greenstreet andUna O'Conner,it's a must watch.also another great Christmas movie is "the shop around the corner " starring Judy garland,Van Johnson, S.Z (cuddles) Zakall and Buster Keaton. There's another version of the same movie starring James Stewart, Margaret Osullivan,Frank Morgan and others that I just can't remember at the moment.
The Garland Johnson version of "The Shop Around The Corner" is called "In the Good Old Summer Time," (1949) and features Judy's baby daughter Lisa Minelli in her first screen appearance.
I watch this movie every year. The "angel" theme is one of the most beautiful film themes I've ever heard. It's in the mixolydian mode (the lowered 7th). I love every character in this movie *except* Julia, the bishop's wife! What a pallid, uninteresting portrayal, possibly the director's fault. I would have loved to see her played by Ann Sheridan or Linda Darnell, but it wasn't my decision, lol! Every other character is fascinating. David Niven and Cary Grant were on fire, ditto Gladys Cooper, Elsa Lancaster and the underrated Sara Haden.
The kid who said Debbie couldn't tgroa snow ball played George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life and Sebbie played Zusu George's younger daughter in the same movie.
😭 Oh, Madison … such a lovely reaction to such a lovely movie. Goodness, I’m really feeling the season this year. 🙏 Miracles are such a beautiful idea, regardless of the reality of things. Truly feeling they are, IS the Miracle. Looking forward to the rest of your December Schedule. 💋
A good Christmas movie! Another four are Christmas In Connecticut (1945), Miracle On 34th Street (1947), It Happened On 5th Avenue (1947) and A Christmas Carol (1951) aka Scrooge in the UK. Just some personal favourites.
Agree on all of the above, especially A Christmas Carol (1951).
The TNT version with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge is also very good.
I was just going to come here and point that out (since Madison reacted to It's a Wonderful Life last year)!
@@Finians_Mancave Me too.

I agree with you regarding The Man Who Came To Dinner. A marvellous film. The scenes between Jimmy Durante and the nurse are particularly funny!

@@michaeldmcgee4499I just rewatched it again a few weeks ago....Irene Dunne was brilliant.
Don't forget Cary Grant in "Arsenic and Old Lace". Good Halloween movie!
I just recently rewatched Bringing Up Baby and for some reason didn't enjoy it as much as I did when I was younger. I can still rewatch My Girl Friday and Arsenic and Old Lace over and over again.
He was also an acrobat in the circus during his teens and went onto do a lot of his own stunts in the movies. Very envious of the dude.
Yay! One of the best Christmas films and finally someone has tackled it. Good for you Madison.
Every year The Bishop’s Wife is the first Christmas movie we watch. We love it.
This has always been one of my favorite Christmas movies, but no one ever seems to know about it. It's been completely ignored by RUclips Reactors, until now.
A wonderful reaction to a wonderful movie. Thank you.
I first watched this film last Christmas and it's now on my annual Christmas watch list.
5:00 oh that mean rich lady actress was also in a old movie called Bernadette. she played an old mean nun. lol.
Song of Bernadette- beautiful film.
I've never seen a remake that wasn't inferior to the original except for Hitchcock's remakes of his own films.
@@michaeldmcgee4499 I would say the remake of Ben Hur in 1959 is better than the ones in 1907 and 1925. But that's the only one I can think of. You're right about 99% of them.
@catherinelw9365 1959 Ben Hur
One of the Best Ever!!❤
@@catherinelw9365 You're right! I'll give you that one! The 1959 version of Ben-Hur is definitely much better than the original!
I love the movie and its message. Thanks for reacting.
My absolutely favorite movie with my favorite movie star Cary Grant❤
A very nice reaction Madison. I'm an old guy (77), I haven't been to a movie theater in 20 years. Why should I when we have classics like this, no nudity, no profanity, no explosions and loud noise. And no silly plots from "stars" who many have never heard of. This movie and movies of this period are something the whole family can enjoy.
El Mirage Land and Cattle Company
El Mirage, Arizona
This is my favorite Christmas-time movie. I watch it every year.
This is my favorite Christmas movie. So glad you enjoyed it.
One of my ALL TIME favorite Christmas movies! Have it in my personal collection. I LOVE IT! Great reaction!
Awesome and overlooked Christmas movie.
I love this movie! Great story and great cast! I first saw it 45 years ago and have watched it many times. Thanks for this reaction.
That one is such a good movie, but you really need to know your Medieval English history to fully appreciate it.
You're a very special lady and I appreciate you 🐱
Love this movie!
A wonderful reaction and one of my annual Christmas movie watches my mom super busy raising 5 of us all by herself use to make time to watch this every year making special time for herself which was rare thank you for a heartfelt Christmas reaction have a great christmas time❤
Great reaction great movie!
People are “Perfected” by facing temptation, being tempted and making the decision not to give in to it. Or failing, suffering the consequences and learning from the experience.
One of my all time favorites
I loved your reaction to this beautiful film, Madison.
A good film for you to react to at any time is, 'Heavens Above!' 1963 starring Peter Sellers, it's a comedy which deals with important issues, in a similar way to The Bishop's Wife.
I’m particularly fond of the supporting characters stories, the Professor and the rich woman and the cab driver… all brilliant actors throughout. David Niven is very good in A Matter of Life And Death made about the same time with heavenly goings on ☺️☺️☺️
This is a masterpiece of Christmas movies.
The cook Matilda was the Bride of Frankenstein.
One of my mom's favorite movies!
Nicely done. Thanks!
One of the VERY few Comedies Humphrey Bogart was ever in-
1955's "We're no Angels", along with Peter Ustinov & Aldo Ray, it's a story about 3 convicts who escape from prison in 1895, from Devil's Island & the interesting situations they get into.
My personal favorite Xmas movie
Matilda was played by Elsa Lanchester who was the Bride of Frankenstein among other things. She is also in one of my favorite comedies called Murder by Death. You should check it out.
The maid Matilda was played by Elsa Lanchester, who happened to be married to Charles Laughton.
One of the best Christmas movies!!! It's a lovely heartwarming masterpiece. Not one scene that isn't great and contributing to the story.
Thanks for doing this reaction. Very overlooked. Add Holiday Affair and The Shop Around the Corner to your future Christmas list.
@@TedLittle-yp7uj yeah I forgot about the name change, I also forgot about Liza appearing at the end.thanks for clearing that up for me.
