    This is a standard song for them to perform off mic. I actually like it a lot when it's performed in such an intimate way. When they do it on stage or in this recording, I'm less drawn to it. It's still obviously great, because it's Pentatonix. But in the future when you one day need stuff to react to, I think the private performance versions of these are worth a listen. It's just one of those songs that is really elevated by them hearing each other with their naked ears and just existing in that feeling.

    I was so lucky! A VIP ticket to a PTX concert used to include a private concert--just 10 fans in a dressing room with Pentatonix (and a few staff), and they would sing one song--no microphones, just 5 singers, standing just inches away from us. And when I was there, they chose to sing "Valentine." My daughter had never heard that song, and she was mesmerized. It would have been so much safer for them to choose a more choral song, full of pretty harmonies and occasional scrunchy chords. But they chose this quirkly little song with intricate timing that could easily go wrong forty different ways--and of course, they nailed it. This song reminds me of the displays of Swarovski crystals at the company store in Austria. Sharp, clear, brilliant, and somehow both cold and warm at the same time. Amazing.
    I really appreciate your transcriptions of the arrangements. They are a perfect accompaniment to your acute analyses. Thank you.

    They "beautified" the original to me. In Pentaholic terms, they "upgraded" it. I had forgotten this one and I really love it! I like the sort of disjointed beginnings then the move to the beautiful melodious sections. Having not heard the original until today, I might not have even attempted to hear it from PTX. The sweet singing of Mitch is heartwarming for me. He doesn't always perform with this sweet voice. He's always in great voice, but this one feels very innocent. They were so young here. I love your open mindedness of giving it a try anyways and it was clear from your face that there were parts that really got to you. When you play it on a keyboard, I find it really lovely for my ears. I never get tired of your style of reactions. Are "Can't Hold Us (Macklemore Ryan Lewis), "Say Something", Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis covers and their original made about the time of Daft Punk medley called "Love Again" on your list? Thank you once again!

    Yaaaaaaaaasssssss! I was so hoping you would react to this cover today! I love it. That intro is so clever. I love it when PTX covers an unconventional song like that and give it such a fresh approach. Another such cover is Come Along from Cosmo Sheldrake... it’s all over the place and yet catchy. It is from the Matt Sallee era so I will patiently wait. Happy Valentine Day to everyone! ❤️🤗

  • @PtxXtp

    Oh the live off mic version of this definitely needs to be heard. They used to do this for their vip groups when there was maybe 10 people at most watching. So the cell phone videos hold up. Plus its a couple years later than this video and you know how Mitch keeps getting better and better as he ages. Ptx getting such a beautiful arrangement out of this original reminds me of their cover of the song Come Along. The original is very weird and not very melodic, but somehow ptx make it work even with the weird lyrics. I guess it will be awhile until you get to it though since its in the Matt Era. I wouldn't be opposed to you mixing the eras up. Just saying there's a lot of good stuff since Matt joined too.

    Babytonix, how young they are! I have no idea how I missed this in my Pentaholic binging times, I am kind of geeking out about the interesting time changes and crystal chime effect of their voices, I can really see them enjoying this, more challenging than a traditional song, fun like Making Christmas, which is Awesome vocally and visually, I am not a Nightmare Before Christmas person, but musically I was immediately fascinated by the complexity, Mitch had even commented that it was musically the most difficult song to date. I love the clarity of Mitch’s countertenor, so pure and pleasant. Wonderful to see a flashback with Avi too. Thank you Sir Hairless ❤

    I haven't heard this one before! They are just masterful arrangers aren't they, as well as great singers. This level of synergy is so rare. Mitch's vocals are always stellar and Scott's voice so velvet. Kirstin's distinctive timbre took the back seat here to allow Mitch to stand alone. Avi kept his line subtle and supportive, while Kevin, as always, held the whole thing together with his complex layers and qualities of rhythm.
    { Just reflecting on what Kevin might have done if he'd continued to complete his medical studies. Would he have been humming or beat boxing while conducting surgeries?! }
    ... Which reminds me...
    A few years back I was having a nerve block in my neck, under what they called "a light anaesthetic' {ie; not as deep under as a 'general' but enough not to be fully conscious } Woke up, briefly, on the trolley being wheeled back to Recovery Unit, with the Aneathetist walking beside me, grinning. Seeing I was awake, he said; "So, you're a bit of a Blues singer!" " Jazz too..." I blurrily replied, before dropping straight back to sleep. Later, I woke up properly and went; "Whaaaaaat!?" "What happened!?" They must have had some background music going in Theatre, and I must have burst into song! I can just imagine the pandemonium as he was trying to place the needle precisely at the right nerves by my spinal chord. Were they dashing about shouting; " Hold Her STILL!" " CUT The MUSIC!! 😵
    I was desperately curious to find out - but there was ONE big question that held me back - and it was this... As I went under, that Anaethetist had his back to me, bending over, and my last conscious thought was; " What a nice arse that man has! ... ... ... " Horrifying! Did I talk about his arse whilst under - as well as sing??? 😵‍💫🥴😰 Was too chicken to ring him and find out...

Katy Perry's Rise with Mario Jose , Brian Justin Crumb, and Mary Lambert have brought tears to so many reactors as well as myself because it's just so overwhelming especially when you know the story behind the collaboration. I love this song, though I've never heard the original. As always, Mitch's vocal gymnastics blow me away, and he always sticks the landing. Wait--that's real gymnastics. 🤪 I really like the part at "'cause I know about my love" where the harmonies do that smooth slide (musical terms: what are they? 🤷‍♀️) When I'm "enjoying" another night of insomnia and listening to the radio, I love it when PTX's versions of this and "We Are Young" come on, though I don't like the original of that song. Wow, I'm wordy today! 😆

    Yay! I really hoped you'd do this one on Valentine's Day! Another great reaction and analysis. I know what you mean, it is a bit confusing as a song, but I actually think it's perfect for Valentine's Day because it has so much feeling and Mitch's voice always grabs me by the heart - especially on this one and The Prayer. Honestly, he could sing the phone book to me or a shopping list and I still think he would make me feel emotional. You have done some Dimash reactions now. His voice is technically probably the best in the world but he just doesn't move me the way Mitch does.
    As you say there is multi tracking on this video here, but just for your own interest (and I would love to hear what you think!) do watch this private performance of Valentine. It is just them, no mics, nothing. They all stand in a line with their eyes shut and are so in tune with each other it's unbelievable. ruclips.net/video/ARRWlFndZkA/видео.htmlsi=KS9NEdwlaf4_wKN1. Mitch and Scott's voices sound so beautiful together - it's evident on this one and The Prayer, plus all the Superfruit songs. The back and forth between them on the Prayer is one of the most beautiful things I'ver ever heard in my 54 years! On some of the Superfruit videos you can see Scott shut his eyes and just appreciate Mitch's voice - I'm thinking in particular of Hiphop goes Broadway I think either 1 or 2? Superfruit is less PG just as a warning!
    For another really emotional one which really features Kirstie watch 'Say Something'. It's beautiful. She's also the lead on 'Rather be' and 'Shallow'. They really don't have egos about who features the most on songs - they always want to serve the music and use the best voice for each arrangement. If you want to see how they work with their arranger Ben Bram (the 6th member of Pentatonix!) I would watch the making of Evergreen - you will find it fascinating from a musician's perspective!
    Thank you again - as always I'm sad that I have to wait another whole week before you do another PTX one! Thank you for enriching my musical life!

      All three you mentioned where Kirstie has the lead are on my list👌Watching Evergreen has also been recommended a lot, but some others mentioned it may contain musical spoilers for songs I've not yet heard, so it's a bit tricky

      @@SirHairlessThat is fair enough re Evergreen and you haven't got to the 'Matt years' in your PTX reactions yet so maybe best to wait for that one till you've done some of those maybe at Christmas as Evergreen was a festive album. You have a long way to go in your PTX journey - and I for one can't wait!

    Ahh yes! I’d hoped you might do this song… and after thinking about your deep dive into it, I think I’m glad I hadn’t heard the original, although it was interesting (&jarring) to see the clips. I’m really curious which of them suggested covering it! This is quite early on for them. There’s a vulnerability in the beginning, then Mitch’s part feels more confident, reassuring. Speaking of Mitch, the part you pointed out how tightly his vocals with Scott dance around, it reminds me of a lot of their Superfruit music. I look forward to whenever you to that. So do you think it aided your R/A of the song to hear the original first? Thinking of Kiiara’s Gold here, where you avoided the original until you’d done the PTX version. Hope you had a lovely Valentine’s Day, Thanks for this treat

    • @SirHairless

      I'd love to know which of them suggests each song they do! I'd love to know their music tastes on a personal level Yes, I've seen a number of comments about Superfruit. I mentioned in another comment reply that I'll probably incorporate Superfruit into a poll within the next weeks/months (not sure how just yet)
      To your question about listening to the original song first....I think it's pot luck really 😅Whilst I try to go into every reaction from a completely neutral perspective, I think there are some psychological biases that are simply unavoidable. If you think the original song is the best song you've ever heard, it's highly unlikely a cover version can top it and so you (subconsciously) may notice the "off" bits in the cover more than usual
      But, in general, I think listening to the original first is a good idea - especially when drawing on the comparison to make points. With 'Gold' I was still very early on in my PTX journey and decided against listening to the original as I wasn't that familiar with PTX and would probably be focussing on comparisons vs the original rather than the singers themselves
      So going forward, it's likely I'll listen to the originals first (at least in most cases, I imagine!)

      @@SirHairless That’s a very helpful response.. I would bet you’re familiar already with most popular songs that artists cover, but then there’s the random Gold or Valentine, and your answer makes good sense. Now wouldn’t it be so great if ptx would preface or conclude each cover with how they decided to ‘make it their own’, and who brought it to the group as a suggestion to cover?! Now and then in interviews or discussions they may reference that info. And I’m sure Ben Bram has a big role in all aspects. Their own channels are a great way to learn about their individual interests and styles. And I’m sure that exploration is on your calendar for someday I hope you plan on doing this for a very long time because we’ll never get to the entire catalogs of everything… especially since they are reportedly busy working on new music now

Silly me. Great reaction!!! For your own entertainment or for a reaction, please check out Pentatonix live performances of the song. They sang it off-mic quite often so there are fan-recorded videos of their beautiful performances.

    Always appreciate the analysis and breakdown from someone who understands music and music theory as much as you do, and your honest reaction to both the original and the PTX cover. I have to admit, this has never been one of my favorite PTX offerings. It's obviously a very complex arrangement, and their performance is top-notch, but I just don't think I'm a fan of the song itself - and while PTX may be able to "upgrade" many songs in their covers, this one just doesn't hit the mark for me.

    The original is kind of jarring to the ear, I don’t know how I feel about it lol. But I’m glad PTX saw something in it and created this beautifully chill song. Would love to see you break down another PTX one that doesn’t get much reactor attention, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. 😊

    Not many reactors react to this song. Which is sad to me. This is still one of my favs that PTX did. I don't mind the original either, as I had heard it before, being I'm a fan of Jessie Ware already. Oddly, I came to understand the song itself in greater depth because of their cover. Anyway, great reaction, I enjoyed it.

    Yeah, when you hear "Valentine" you think "love song", but this is like a Halloween love song. Kind of scary and yet pretty. It is one of my all-time favorites because I didn't know the original and because the harmonies are so beautiful. I love learning about many unique artists through PTX. Each part here is carefully woven together, and it was one of the first videos where Mitch and Scott (aka Scomiche) sang a duet as the main part in a song, and it had to be a love song. Thanks for another great reaction.

    I think of this song as almost Superfruit (with PTX accompaniment), mainly because of those tight octave runs - Scott and Mitch do that a *lot* on the Superfruit album. It reminds me of a little youtube "Happy Birthday" that they put up for Jazmin Sullivan, all in crazy runs an octave apart. It goes off the rails a bit at the end, but it's pretty impressive. ruclips.net/video/f0nMsJQVBps/видео.html

    One of my favorites❤ did you react to "Aha" perfomed in Starvista at Singapore?

    • @AprilG72271
      @AprilG72271 6 месяцев назад +2

      That's my favorite performance, but the original video has better sound quality. You cannot hear Avi Kaplan's overtones in the live performance because it's an amateur video from a cell or camera, but it is second level PTX for certain. Everyone asks "where's Kevin?" If one watches closely they will see Mitch move center stage while Avi is trying to blow the speaker system. And Scott move to Mitch's spot leaving room for Kevin at the end. He is there but the video focuses on Mitch mostly. You may want to consider a double reaction to both the original video and Singapore Star Vista. But no doubt the live performance is crazy good. I mentioned Aha Singapore when you first began reacting but advised that you may want to get to know the group a little better. I believe you're there. You analysis of songs makes you different from others, so I believe you have had enough exposure to react to that one. Imogene Heap should be proud. THEY SLAY IT

    I agree with your confusion about this song. I don't like it. The lyrics get lost because there's not a good flow in the music so it's difficult to relate to the song. The music is choppy and disjointed and ptx do a good job of emulating that feeling. Your breakdown does make it musically more interesting than I previously thought of it but I still don't like it 😂
