    Something to remember: the first Hellblade was made with a self-imposed indie game mentality, as the dev team wanted to see whether they could deliver a AAA-quality game on a fraction of their usual budget and manpower. Whether they succeeded or not, I leave such judgements to you.
    With that in mind, what's this game's excuse?

      Yeah the first game felt like a 15-20 min tech demo that was stretched out into a full game for some reason.
      It was all show and no substance. It also might as well have been a computer generated movie instead of a game for how much gameplay was in it.

    • @alexlyster3459

      That despite extra budget. The team for this game really isn't all that much larger than the first game.

  • @CrazyMattLine

    The appeal of the first game was that it felt like a delusional psychotic break and was atmospheric enough to carry that feeling. It was never fun per se, but it was a fascinating experience. You were constantly questioning whether any of it was real, or whether Senua was just running around an empty valley battling things that weren't even there.
    Hell, the boss fights were literally analogies for mental health conditions.
    It didn't need a sequel, it was a complete experience and story in and of itself. To go with all the mythological stuff being actually real is even more baffling.

    • @satekeeper
      @satekeeper 5 месяцев назад +3

      I always assumed in the first game basically none of the stuff was real. We even see her "die" at the end, then become the god.. I took that to mean it was all just her metaphorically accepting a horrible painful truth, being changed by it. But now there's others people, towns, etc., so.. it was all real? Kind of disappointing.

    • @icravedeath.1200
      @icravedeath.1200 5 месяцев назад +6

      That's just depressing, they accidentally ruined their great depiction of psychosis by the sheer fact of a sequel existing.
      Imo they could've done good by pulling the scope back by a lot, the structure of hellblade doesn't work at such a large scale.

    Not knowing what was real and what was an illusion was one of my favourite points about the first one. So i think it's a real shame tge devs dropped the ball in the sequel by showing that for exemple giants are real and others can see them too...
    Also, having other people around you in general felt weird. The constant isolation felt fitting and made everything more surreal. Having actual dialogue with people you can see instead of voices and shadowy figures breaks a lot of the atmosphere. Having your allies be just out of focus or frame, somewhat blurry figures like Senuas memories of Dillion would have worked wonders

      @@BurntFrost Idk! Personally, I like going down that route. I like that we have Senua as an unreliable narrator with so much in question about what’s real and what isn’t.
      Maybe some people are real, maybe others are imagined. Maybe the ENTIRE game is imagined by Senua, or maybe she only hears voices. I really enjoy how much freedom the story gives you in deciding what to believe and take away from it all. Definitely not for everybody, but that’s another thing I like about the game haha. The AAA world is typically so focused on marketing everything to everyone, and I like that this is just the devs doing something they really wanted to do themselves. I actually did a theatre piece wearing make-up inspired by Senua, but this was before renewed interest in early medieval cultures caught up to what archaeologists have been saying for a while: the Vikings didn’t wear warpaint outside of heavy black eyeliner (according to records anyway). Similarly, the idea that Celtic Britons and the Picts did it has been called into question recently, at least as far as using woad to do it, since woad is crap as both a tattoo ink and as a body paint.

      The band Heilung (who composed the soundtrack for Hellblade II) has a term for what they're doing: "Amplified history". The premise is explicitly not historical accuracy, but the creation of a certain atmosphere and vibe based on historical elements, but amplified to work in the context of present day media landscape. In some way it's not that different from legendary sagas.

    • @GallowglassVT
      @GallowglassVT 5 месяцев назад

      @NeovanGoth I can vibe with that as a Heilung fan and it does work in games that are going for a more larger than life feel. Films and TV though? I'm a huge fan of the first one and I can't help but feel a bit disappointed with the sequel. The first one, while still not a typical game, provided a very distinct experience that I'd argue couldn't have been just made into a movie. And also a small in quantity but still engaging combat. With the sequel they went for improved graphics while sacrificing everything else. The story still is pretty good, not as touching as the first one imo, but the game aspect is pretty much completely lost. It feels like a movie that you have to hold forward throughout with a bit of repetitive, albeit pretty looking combat. Although there are a bunch of people who enjoy the sequel more for the improved graphics and don't really care about gameplay, but I'm not in that group.

      It was good because of the unique way of telling the story and the amazing graphics. But I never saw the appeal in playing it a second time.

    It's very frustrating seeing videogames continue the broadcast TV trend of "ofscrean-itis". Hey brother, look at how many ships are in my fleet, that right behind the camera. Hey watch Picasso paint and mistreat women for two hours while the camera stares at the *back* of the easel. Hey watch us write all these complex equations on a chalk board the is just out of frame. Hey Watch Blackthorne draw a map of the world that we'll never point the camera at after he's finished it. At least videogames have the excuse of needing to save disk space and limited processing power. It seems like directors these days want to give the audience less reason to look at the screen.

    I feel like the plotlines where the main character always "has to" do something is almost always for female protagonists. Which makes me think a lot of writers are still not comfortable writing for a female character, and that's subconsciously reflected in these plotlines which make the character more an object of their environment and circumstances rather than a subject with full agency. Maybe they have difficulty fully warging into the mind of a woman, and are uncomfortable depicting the internal thoughts and struggles of a female character. So it's easier to just view them from the outside and subconsciously remove the character's ability to decide things form the story.
    Or maybe it's some deeply internalized patriarchic thing around a woman who enacts violence. Like they've reached the point where they can accept a woman who enacts violence - but what they still can't accept is if that woman enacts violence without the moral high ground. They can accept a woman who fights and kills - but only if it's always clear and never questioned that she holds the moral right when she does. The easiest way to do that is (a) make the protagonist's enemies obviously and simplistically evil and/or (b) take away the protagonist's ability to choose to conduct violence. So if Lara Croft kills a bunch of soldiers by brutally slashing their necks open, then (a) the soldiers all need to be Illuminati terrorist pedophiles who kick a puppy in a cutscene and/or (b) Lara Croft cannot be shown _choosing_ to kill them; the choice is forced on her and she _has to_ kill them.
    What Lara Croft can't be is a female Jason Brody from Far Cry 3. In a lot of the broad strokes, the plotlines of Far Cry 3 and the Tomb Raider reboot are very similar - privileged white upper-class kid gets trapped on a remote island and must learn violence to survive. But Jason Brody's character development is us seeing him spiral and lose himself, as his deeds of violence change him into something dark and disturbing. While Lara Croft's character development is us seeing her rise triumphant, and violence is the unquestionable moral means by which she reaches the best part of herself.
    And the difference between them isthat Jason Brody is a subject - a thinking human being who may be facing desperate circumstances but is certainly the one who chooses to fight and kill. While Lara Croft is just an object at the mercy of events - a victim of circumstances who never has a choice except to pick up a knife and merk some bitches.
    Videogame writing might still have some way to go.
    (And yes, I know, Rhianna Pratchett was the lead writer for Tomb Raider and she is in fact a woman - but in all her works, most of her female characters are basically the same: two-dimensional good archetypes who are forced by the acts of the villains to let their heroism emerge and there's just no complexity to them at all. So I argue that either Pratchett is shit at writing for female characters, or just shit at writing.)
