    I’ve owned my Synology for 2 years and just learned about snapshot replication. Thanks! Great video!

      One more thing to add, for me this is a game changer. I use syncthing on my Synology to keep my home folders synchronized across my Macs. With snapshot replication I can finally restore files I accidentally delete. I have Time Machine enabled as well but the the more back up options the better :)

    It's great to finally find a channel dedicated to all Things synology geared more towards home users rather than companies. I had been using a series of how to videos from mydoodads channel but he seems to have moved on to other things before completing his series on synology. There are so many things which would help out "new users" like myself gain a better understanding, and your channel seems to check all the boxes. Thanks; I'm looking forward to checking out all of your videos.

    I always assumed Hyper Backup was for clients only and never gave it a second thought, this is great and would not have considered it had you not posted this. Awesome video and info as always!

    The problem with setting static IP address on the NAS ( in my experience ) is that the router does not always recognize it and so it sets its own IP address for the NAS. And then the NAS can't been seen on the network. It can take a fair bit of messing about to get this sorted out. I just use reservations on the router. This way, all of the devices on the network can have their IP addresses set in the same place making it far easier to administer.

    • @andyrandy0815
      @andyrandy0815 Год назад +3

      Creating a DHCP reservation is the best way to go. If a static IP is set in the Nas, make sure the IP is not from DHCP range 🙄

    • @WunderTechTutorials

      DHCP reservation is definitely the way to go if you know how/can.

    Great video as always.
    A couple of points though:
    IPs should always be assigned from the router if possible. Hosts demanding certain IPs can potentially create problems.
    Disabling UPnP is great and all, but if you're using Chromecasts etc. they might not work.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Год назад +1

      Thank you! Definitely agree on the first point. Some ISP-provided routers don't allow it though (my parents didn't), so this is the next best option (along with limiting the DHCP range if possible).
      Definitely interested in your second point - what ports do Chromecast devices open? That would concern me from a security standpoint because I can't imagine why they would need to have any ports forwarded. I don't have one though, so I wasn't aware that they use UPnP.

    Would it be beneficial to backup the snapshots to a cloud service such as backblaze? Along with the other backups from active backups for business and certain other important files?
    Or would that just be overkill. I don’t want to pay more than I need to if I can help it.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  8 месяцев назад

      I don't believe that you can back up the snapshots with Hyper Backup (you can use snapshot replication but it needs to be a second NAS). Either way, the backup should be enough .

    Weird question. I plugged in both of my Ethernet ports to my router but the router shows traffic over just one. What do you have to do to get it to use both. Link aggregation was enabled.

    • @WunderTechTutorials

      You did it correctly! That error just exists because you don't have a valid certificate, but the traffic is encrypted and the device is trusted which is the important part.

    I'm in the middle of RAID expansion. Adding a 5th drive to my SHR2 setup. And my oldest drive just went to critical status. Can I swap this drive while im in the middle of RAID expansion or am I screwed?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Год назад +1

      I wouldn't do it in the middle, to be honest (but this is just my opinion). With SHR-2, you'll have two drives of redundancy so I would wait it out and then replace it if possible.

  • @notreallyme425
    @notreallyme425 Год назад

    My router doesn’t support link aggregation, so I set my two network connections up as a “bond.” Besides just having one IP address, is there any other advantage to doing that?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Год назад +1

      Do you remember what you configured? If you set it as Balance-SLB, it's very similar to Balance-TCP (which is what the tutorial I created uses).
      If it's active/backup mode, you'll basically have a backup in case anything was to happen to one of the lines (lose one but the NAS will stay online).

  • @batchv.7737

    Hello. You said in the Router Configuration Settings that if you have anything listed in there, it's dangerous. When I checked my NAS settings under router configuration, it has entries made by "Quickconnect". I enabled quickconnect to be able to share files and folders. I also use quickconnect for remote access of my NAS if I'm not at home. Are you telling me that Synology has this Quickconnect feature in their software that puts its users at risk???

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Год назад

      It's not that QuickConnect puts you at risk, it's that UPnP can attempt to port forward without you really knowing (like the example you're explaining). The good news is that UPnP doesn't always work (router has to be configured for it), but a lot of them are by default.
      In summary, I would log in to your router and check to see what (if anything) is port forwarded. If there are ports forwarded to your NAS, remove them because it means that in some capacity, your NAS is accessible from the outside world.
      There's nothing wrong with port forwarding if you're the one doing it...but you have to be the one doing it - consciously knowing what you're doing and why you're doing it. That's why I (as well as many others) hate UPnP.
      EDIT: By the way, check the QuickConnect settings. There's a way to disable UPnP there for QuickConnect.

    Would Synology Drive Server and versioning plus recycle bin accomplish the same coverage as Snapshot Replication?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Год назад +1

      Off the top of my head and not remembering exactly how Synology Drive handles it, I'd think for individual files that it would be similar. Where it could differ is with an entire folder - if you have to revert to yesterdays files for an entire folder, it's a very quick thing with snapshots. Not sure if that's possible with Synology Drive (off the top of my head).

    • @TheMattMustain
      @TheMattMustain Год назад

      @@WunderTechTutorials after further research, you are correct. Versioning is helpful for individual files. It isn't helpful for an entire folder. Ransomware comes to mind. Also, rolling back individual file versions appears to be only available in the web GUI which stinks. Can't do it in a desktop or mobile app. I'll be configuring snapshots. Thanks for the video 👍🏻

  • @jimholloway1785

    I saw in the Synology Package Center it has a DNS server. Have you setup this DNS Server ?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Год назад

      I have used it and it's...fine. Not my favorite because it's kind of confusing, but it does work. I prefer Pi-hole or AdGuard Home for the ad-blocking as well, but if you just want a DNS server and are willing to get passed the somewhat confusing functionality and settings, it's fine.

    • @QuikTechSolutions
      @QuikTechSolutions Год назад +1

      JIM, I agree with Frank. The DNS Server takes a bit of getting used to, but is solid once it’s up & running.
