This was really good. Everyone talks about this and I just think I needed to see what it actually looks like while doing it. So now I have to gather my strength and find the right moment to do it because I’m at a point where I have to do something. Thank you so much!

After 13 years and two kids later. I’m pregnant again with twins .15 years ago I had to sleep train my 8 week old. I had to start back working at 6 weeks and had to be on the job at 5:45am. I know sleep training is not supposed to be appropriate at 8weeks old but after cosleeping and waking up with my forearm on baby’s forehead I know I had to make a plan. The first night took 45mins for her to stop crying. The second shorter time. By the forth night she went down without a problem. With twins on the way I’m praying it’s as easy as my first. 😅.
Difference is I had no problem with waking up throughout the night to feed especially since she was breastfed. But the first 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep meant the world of difference. I’m aware this video is three years old. Good job mama looking forward to the rest of your videos.

My daughter took 30 minute naps until around 6 months when I switched her onto two naps, they started consolidating. Definitely suggest switching to 2 naps and extending those wake windows! Even if he does look sleepy, push through!

You have way more patience then I do!!! My son is 3 months and he sleeps in my bed every night (not by choice.. he hates his bassinet)... can’t wait til he’s 5 months so I can start sleep training😓 you’re an amazing momma and such a strong woman. Thank you for these videos!! Makes me feel less alone in this baby sleep journey ❤️

going through this right now with my daughter. 2 nights in, 1 night was rough, 2nd night was rougher, but the mornings got better.
Doing this is like fighting every paternal instinct in your body; to go in there and start soothing them as soon as they cry, but in the long run babies need to know how to self sooth, and to be an optimal parent we need our sleep too to look after our child.
Thanks for the video, it's very accurate to a lot of what we are going through at the moment. Most videos or online reading only talks about the steps, but doesn't show what we see here, which is a baby crying intensely for an hour straight, that's a reality hit, set backs and adapting to the situation.

Hi momma! You have mentioned that Jackson doesn’t last 2hrs before being cranky. But I think that pushing his wake window longer will help his naps to lengthen, he might be cranky cuz of other reasons like he is bored and needed a new scenery, teething. I have a 5month 2 week old and we have struggled with the crappy 30 mins naps for soooo long until I followed appropriate wake windows for his age. I transitioned him from 4-3 naps when he was 4.5months old and that’s when I increased his wake window and his naps finally lengthen.
Now, we are following a 2/2.25/2.5/2.5 wake times (on 3 naps).
Jackson fighting his last nap could be a sign he he ready to drop that last nap and switch to 2 naps. Yes it will lead to early bedtimes for a few days but that will also help lengthen his naps.
I would say try a 2.5/3/3 wake times for him (that’s 2 naps) push through the wake times, keep him entertained before putting him at the appropriate times. Hope this helps! ❤️❤️

    • @annettesoriano4618
      @annettesoriano4618 4 года назад

I agree! My son is 6 months on Sunday and at 4 1/2 months I increased his wake times and went from four naps to three naps and his naps went from 30 minutes long to 1 1/2 to 2 hours long. I think at Jackson’s age he should be down to two naps now and overtime that should help his naps lengthen. Give it a try! Praying for your and little babe 🥰

    • @alejandradelcastillo4459
      @alejandradelcastillo4459 4 года назад

@@annettesoriano4618 Same here! I say longer wake time periods. Mine is 7 months is a few days and I just keep her up a little longer closer to 4 hours if she is not very cranky. I just keep her entertained and when she starts getting fussy is either because she is probably bored or hungry. As soon as she starts getting super fussy, I take her outside for a couple of min to change the scenery and when we come back in, she's like a new baby. Usually going outside for a min helps kinda put her self back together. I can tell she is getting sleepy if she is really really fussy then I see if its been 3 or 4 hrs since she's been awake so I m like yep she's tired. My babe also has a 1.5 to 2 hr naps. we have 2 naps now.

Hey Kayla, I don't know if you read this, but I just had to message you.
I feel like my son has had identical sleep issues and other issues to Jackson, reflux etc. He is also born in December -19. We tried everything, and when I say that I mean EVERYTHING. After spending loads on sleep consultants and trying multiple different sleep training styles, one of our doctors had the idea of checking his ferritin (iron) levels. They were really really low, as were mine too (which probably caused his low levels). We got an iron supplement for him and the change is unbeliveable! He sleeps so good now, takes great naps and is happy for the full wakeup time. He also would be super tired after 2 hours every time.
I don't know if this helps or if it is the iron thing with you, but maybe it is worth of checking out! Especially if the sleep training is not seeming to work. 😊

You are listening to your instincts and doing what’s best for your baby 🥰

It’s all about wake windows for us! We just transitioned my 6.5mo to 2 naps with 2.5/3/3.5 wake windows. She’s been taking at least 1.5hr naps for each! She does get cranky around 2hrs but we just push through by carrying her around and playing quietly so she’s not over stimulated. I hope the sleep consultant can help :) You both are doing so great!!

Thank you for putting this out there and sharing your experiences. I had previously watched your video of sleep training Riley. That is what motivated me to try it with my almost 5 month old. He was previously napping being held or in his swing, and he was co-sleeping with me at night. I did kind of a modified version since he’s still so young. But he now will sleep the majority of the night in his bassinet and almost all naps are in his crib! It was definitely harder for me than him! But we are both getting better sleep now, even though we don’t get it perfect.

You mentioned mesh bumpers, I highly recommend them. My baby who is now 9 months would move around in her crib then get her arms or legs stuck then wake up cause she couldn’t get them out. I bought the mesh bumpers and she started sleeping way longer and that wasn’t an issue anymore.

Emilee Engelhardt Mine is almost 8 months and still does 3 naps. He does tend to wake up early though, like 6am daily, so two naps and getting to bedtime just isn’t enough for him. The last nap is always a cat nap still though. My dude just can’t hang past 2-3 hours though. I definitely try food and diaper and a change in activity and he will start doing the eye rub, so I know it is that he is tired is why he is fussing.

My baby is 4.5 months and for the last 6-7 weeks he has been waking up every 1-3hrs at night. Sometimes staying up for 2-3hrs crying, falling asleep for 5min, crying, etc.
Not going to him doesn’t work, so I have to comfort him every single time. I tried the Ferber method the last night and he woke up 11x in total. I try to only nurse him 2x at night. He goes down easily most naps and mostly at bedtime, but I have a very hard time letting him cry longer than 4mins at a time. Also we share a room so it’s extra hard to hear him cry at night when I am in the same room.
I will try this tonight and make the Intervalls a little bit longer, but modify the Ferber method to my needs.
I can’t take this anymore him waking up 11x a night, I did it for 6-7 weeks but I can’t anymore

Baby boy used to nap for only 30 mins and was waking up every 2hrs at night😬 my baby is 6 months old and now does 9am wake up, 11:30 nap for 30 min, 2:30 nap for 2 hours and between 6pm-6:40pm 10 min nap if needed, and 9pm bedtime.

So I think a lot of the issue is scheduling with Jackson. He sounds undertired for most naps and bedtime which is why he is waking early and taking short naps and fighting bedtime as well. He is probably ready for two naps and longer wake times.

Have you guys thought about maybe switching who takes care of which kid? I know Joe usually takes care of Riley at night, but maybe give yourself a week or so of taking care of Riley like Joe normally does and letting Joe do the sleep training with Jackson at night? You could even pump and give Joe bottles for Jackson. This might give you a bit of a break and Riley might really love some extra momma time.

I 100% recommend Taking Cara Babies - even if not buying her 5-24 month program, just following her IG. She openly says that night sleep is conquered before naps and pushing wake windows (gently of course) to match your baby’s development. Her tips and sleep program have worked WONDERS on our little guy, who is the same age as Jackson. We were having the exact same issues from the start and she got us to a place where he was sleeping through the night by 12 weeks and conquered naps around 20 weeks. That all said, you’re doing a great job and you’ve got this!

I think his crawling and learning new skills is probably more of the sleep culprit than teething. Teething isn’t supposed to really be something that interrupts sleep until teeth are about to break through. When they learn new skills though, then they wake up and try to start using them (such as crawling around the crib in the middle of the night). I also think he knows that if he cries enough in the middle of the night, you will nurse him to sleep in bed. You might need to nurse him in a chair or in bed but put him back in the crib after nursing so he knows that he can’t cry long enough to get to come to bed. We also stopped all feeding until it was time to get up when we sleep trained so he wouldn’t wake up and think he needs food super early every morning. Ours waits until 7am after feeding last at 7pm. We just make sure he eats real often during the day. Just some food for thought!

    • @lessehead
      @lessehead 3 года назад

I don’t think crawling and learning has anything to do with it! As a mother of two grown kids, I think babies have to learn how to self-soothe, and that is why the Ferber method works. They are going to cry; it’s what babies do. I would stop trying to analyze it and just let him figure it out.

Natalie Wiles is an awesome sleep consultant! She did a q&a video with Susan Yara awhile back on sleep training and I learned a lot from it. When we trained my daughter, we surprisingly had more trouble with bedtime rather than naps. But even before sleep training, she took decent naps. I never had a problem with short naps but she always slept on me before sleep training. Also, I think letting him sleep in your bed in the morning may be confusing him. My daughter is 19 months now and the days when she accidentally passes out on me or in my bed, she has some issues the next day or 2 when she goes to sleep in her bed. You don't suck at sleep training! It may be that he's just not ready. We didn't sleep train until my daughter was 10 months old and she did very well then. I think he may be ready to slowly increase his wake times and try to drop that last nap of the day. Keep your head up, mama! I am so surprised Riley is being a champ through all this! I always get worried when my 19 month old wakes up in the middle of the night crying that she'll wake up my 8 year old lol

It took us about a month to get night time down with her & with naps it took us a little long however she only takes one nap & has since 6 months, she goes down for bed at 6-6:30 and sleeps till 6:30ish in the morning then naps for 3 hours during the day after 3-4 hours after being awake! Maybe because he’s falling asleep in your bed in the morning it’s confusing him!. He might scream that bit longer cause he knows he does get to sleep in your bed! When you get the rocking chair it might be better cause you could nurse him there and then put him back in the crib if it’s to early to wake up! Hope it’s going good though love your videos

Both my boys have always been great night sleepers both slept through the night by 8-9 weeks. But naps have never been good I’ve just given up on them I don’t stress myself out about it. My 10 month old only takes 1 nap if that and usually the longest I can get him down is 1 hr. He gets sleepy around 6 pm but we just keep him up because he’s time is at 8. Just follow his lead and don’t stress so much about a schedule. That’s my advice

As everyone has been saying, if the wake windows increased then naps would probably improve, which would in turn make the time leading up to and including bedtime better.
But the second thing I wanted to suggest is: as difficult as it is, when you put him down at night, I don't think you are "supposed to" have him fall asleep nursing some nights and not others. He's got to go in wide awake every night of training (and ideally every night after that too). You notice how the night after he nursed to sleep he cried 40 minutes at bedtime BUT also slept the longest through the night? If he was going in wide awake every night the crying at bedtime would gradually decrease day by day AND he would be more likely to give you full nights because when he's putting himself to sleep at the beginning of the night he's more able to easily do it without fuss when he wakes slightly overnight.
Picture it like this: if you fell asleep in your living room at 9pm, and then woke up a couple of hours later in you bedroom with no recollection of how you got there, wouldn't you kind of be like, "what the hell?" for a bit? But when you fall asleep on your own in your bedroom at night and wake up slightly in the middle of the night, it's nothing. You probably just go back to sleep without making a peep, or even realizing your awake. That's what needs to happen with Jackson. Hope that makes sense! I only mention it because any sleep consultant worth their salt will tell you this. Wanted to save you the hassle and cost, lol. :) Good luck!

Hi I know this comment was posted 3 years ago and it seems as if you are knowledgeable in the area of sleep training. I was wondering since no one talks about the use of pacifier... my daughter has been using it since day one and has been a decent nap and sleeper but now at 5.5 month she's having a hard time when she wakes up and can't put the paci on her mouth... she is getting better tho but am I hindering her by letting her use it? And my daughter is a panick attack crier meaning her cries sounds like she is having a panic attack and it scares me I can't let her cry more than 3min... also she seems to wake up every night at the same time for a bottle feed... I don't even know what my question is at this point I just want her to ge able to put herself down to sleep without me helping her every time she can't find the paci... another thing we live in a one bedroom apt.. not sure if hubby and I should start sleeping in the living room to properly sleep train her.

I’m 21, unmarried and have no children but I was just curious about how sleep training works because my mom did the same with me and my brother and it worked out great (especially since my mom brought us up as a single mother and she had to deal with a newborn and a toddler on her own)

My baby is 8.5 months and fights the third nap of the day HARD but puts herself to sleep fine for the others. She's not ready for just 2 naps I've tried recently. I just rock her for the third nap only and she's out like a light. Doesn't mess with her ability to put herself down for the other naps/night time at all

I know this video is old but ... I also have a Riley (Ryleigh) and a Jackson (Jaxon) lol. I'm currently sleep training my Jaxon. Since he's 4.5 months I'm staying in the room at nights while shushing and patting him (chair method). Took him an hour initially to fall asleep. So so hard to sit through even though I was right there to comfort him 😞 Surprisingly his first nap was 2 hours but I think he was just so tired from less sleep at night. Anyway, this was helpful to see how it works for someone else.

It has been really nice to watch your sleep training videos while I am pregnant with my first (37 weeks). It has led to some great discussions with my husband about how things can go, how we want to handle it, and how we will eventually sleep train months from now. We are going to do the Taking Cara Babies sleep training eventually but it seems pretty similar to Ferber so it is great to see it in action. Especially because it hasn't been simple for you, so I know how strong I will need to be. Even when you end up comforting him, it is so clear how strong you are and how much you love your little dude. Everyone getting even some sleep is a success!!!

Try adjusting his wake times. Try going to 2.5 hours or so. Try 2 naps. I know when my baby dropped the third nap she naps so much longer now. There might be a few early nights. Around that age you can’t go by cues anymore. You need to follow wake times. Also going from crib to your bed might be confusing him

Power to you Kayla. You don't suck. You're doing your best and going with your instincts. These sleep training methods don't seem to take teething or bad days into account. Babies have days when they just need extra cuddles, so you're doing what you think is best and being flexible. Power to you 💕 Thank you for positing this. It's kind of annoying seeing a lot of these sleep training videos on RUclips that go perfect like "Yeah day 2 of sleep training my baby slept 12hours". I'm like 'oh please! that baby probably didn't even need sleep training' and I just click off the video. At least your videos are realistic. This will be what a lot of peoples experience will look like 👍

My 4.5 month old daughter is teething and I give her ashton and parsons teething powders (godsend) but I always put a drop of gripe water in her morning and night bottles, maybe try Jackson with some of that? Teething can unsettle their stomachs and everything but gripe water covers so many different things and they only need 5ml :) xx

I suggest Camilia by Borijn.. it's completely safe and reliable. Please look into it and give it a try many mom's recommend those teething drops, plus it helps baby relax and fall asleep. Jackson is definitely having a teething issue that is contributing to his irritability and restlessness. Also him transitioning to the crib maybe something he's mentally not prepared for. I know you're doing the Ferber thing. But he seems like he just wants comfort during his sleeps. Maybe put one of your shirts or a sweater that has your scent on it in the crib with him will help him fall asleep and stay asleep. It's an old trick that used to work for my daughter when she was about his age. If you're not too sure about the teething drops atleast try the shirt trick. Place it over him like a blanket and keep an eye on him until he falls asleep then for safety purposes remove it to prevent any fear of sids. Best of luck!!

I would definitely increase his awake windows to 3ish hours. Just keep him awake & keep him busy. Go for a walk, sensory play anything to keep him busy. That will definitely help him nap better & also go down to 2 longer naps maybe first one at 9.30 and for next one at 1.30-2 and then go to bed at 6.30\7. It might take a few days to adjust for him but in the long run will be better for you both if he has 2 longer naps than cat napping all day.

I was so looking forward to this video after the first one with his first 24 hours. I love watching videos on sleeping training to see how it works for others and to get inspiration/motivation from someone who has been through it. Just a note though: It was a little hard to follow which day of sleep training you were on when you started every new clip with “let me catch you up with what happened yesterday/last night” without also mentioning which night of sleep training you were on or even what day of the week it was. For me, that would have been helpful to know.

My first baby is 20 days old (he just fell asleep nursing while I watched this video- thanks!), and I may look into the Ferber method when we’re there! I don’t understand why Jackson is so anti-sleep!!! I remember watching your videos when he was 7 weeks old and he would grunt all night and not sleep then, either. Jackson, SLEEP!!! 1. Is sleep training possible if I have my baby's cot in my room?

Just wondering to keep consistency would it be an idea to nurse him at 5am in a chair in his nursery & pop him back in his crib instead of bringing back into your bed until getting up time.. I realise it's harder work for you to do so but I just wonder if hes resisting napping in his crib because sometimes he gets to sleep in mummy's bed & that way your totally consistent every time & theres no confusion.. just an idea.

Charlotte Wilby I agree! I think this builds a crutch that he knows if he wails enough he will get to come to bed with her and nurse to sleep. Mine always did this too because he knows someone would come hold him. Now we just leave him there or will change him and feed him and put him back in the crib so he knows he can’t win us over 😂

Be careful following this advice and method. Dr. Ferber has actually renounced this method and regrets putting this method out there. He is now in support of more gentle ways of getting a little one to sleep. This is the old method which is reserved only as a last resort after all other methods have failed. It can cause psychological and attachment disorders that can be lasting through childhood and even into adulthood.

Hi Kayla! My husband and I watch your videos all the way in Australia (we like to call ourselves the Aussie version of Kayla and Joe 😂).
Just want to say that you are doing such an amazing job! Don’t worry about some of the unsupportive comments on here. It’s such a sad sad world we live in when as mothers we can’t be more supportive of each other and instead find the time in our busy days to bring another mama down.
I sleep trained by 9mo but we didn’t use the Ferber method (we followed a program called the Little Ones). My only suggestion would be (as some supportive mamas have already suggested) extending those awake windows and really really tracking them. I usually set a timer the minute my little man wakes up. Also consider dropping that last nap and having an earlier bed time until Jackson gets used to the longer awake times and less naps (our bedtime is 6:30pm).
As I said, you are amazing and I really enjoy watching your videos! 🥰
