Introducing Kim Ju-yeol
전라북도 남원군 금지면 옹정리에서 아버지 김재계와 어머니 권찬주 사이의 3남 2녀 중 차남(넷째)으로 1944년 10월 7일에 태어났다.
Kim Joo-yoel was born on October 7, 1944, the second son of two boys and three daughters, to Kim Jae-kye, his father, and to Kwon Chan-ju, his mother, in the village Ongjeong, Keumjimyeon, Namwongun, North Jolla Province,
1960년 3월 15일 제4대 대통령 부정 선거가 있었다.
On March 15, 1960, there was the 4th presidential rigged election.
1960년 3월 15일부터 4월 13일까지를 전후하여 마산에서 3.15 부정선거에 항거하여 시민들이 들고 일어났다.
Around March 15 to April 13, 1960, citizens rose up in Masan to protest against the 3.15 fraudulent election.
이 시위를 목격한 김주열의 이모할머니는 김주열 김광렬에게 시내에 나가 보라고 했다.
Sister of Kim Joo-yeol's grandmother, who saw this demonstration, told Kim Joo-yeol and his old brother Kim Gwang-ryeol to go out and join the protest.
김주열 형제는 시위에 합류해 구호를 외치며 시위대와 함께 전진했지만 경찰이 최루탄을 쏘았고 김광열은 집에 돌아왔지만 김주열은 돌아오지 못하고 실종되었다.
Kim Joo-yeol and his older brother Kim Gwang-yeol joined the protest and shouted slogans and advanced with the protesters, but the police fired tear gas and Kim Gwang-yeol returned home, but Kim Joo-yeol could not return and went missing.
김주열의 어머니인 권찬주 여사는 아들은 어디에서도 찾을 수 없었고 김주열이 살해당해 경찰이 도청 앞 저수지에 시신을 투기했다는 소문을 듣고 시민들과 저수지 에서 물을 퍼냈지만 끝내 김주열을 찾지 못했다. 결국 권찬주 여사는 아들을 찾지 못해서 며칠 간 가슴을 졸였다.
Kim Joo-yeol's mother, Mrs. Kwon Chan-ju, could not find her son anywhere and heard rumors that Kim Joo-yeol had been murdered and the police had dumped the body in a reservoir in front of the provincial government building. In response, she scooped water from the reservoir with the citizens, but in the end she couldn't find her son, and she spent several days in her grief as she couldn't find her son's whereabouts.
그런데 여러 날 후 마산 앞바다에서 김주열의 시신이 발견되었는데 처참하게도 눈에 최루탄이 박혀 있는 변사체로 발견되었다.
However, several days later, the body of Kim Joo-yeol was found in the sea off Masan, and it was miserably found with a tear gas canister stuck in the eye.
바로 김주열이 실종되었던 그날 경찰은 시위대를 향해 최루탄을 쏘았다.
On the very day of the protest when Kim Ju-yeol went missing, the police fired tear gas at the protesters.
이때 맨 앞에서 시위를 하던 김주열의 눈에 최루탄이 박힌 것이었다.
At this time, a tear gas grenade was put in the eye of Kim Joo-yeol, who was protesting in front.
경찰은 시신에 돌을 메달아 몰래 마산 앞바다에 버렸지만 시신을 묶은 밧줄이 27일 만에 풀리면서 김주열의 시체가 물위로 떠올랐다.
The police tied a stone to the body and secretly dumped it in the sea off Masan, but the rope that tied the body was untied after 27 days, and Kim Joo-yeol's body floated on the surface of the water.
이를 본 마산 시민들은 분노하였다. 마산의 3.15항거는 4.19 혁명으로 이여졌다. 이 사건의 범인인 박종표는 체포되어 실형을 선고받았다.
Seeing this, Masan citizens were furious. The March 15 protest in Masan led to the 4.19 revolution. Park Jong-pyo, the culprit in this case, was arrested and sentenced to prison.
마산 시민들은 김주열의 시신이 떠오른 마산 앞바다를 잊지 않고 기념하고 있다. 그래서 이 공원이 생긴 것이다.
Masan citizens do not forget and commemorate the sea off Masan, where Kim Ju-yeol's body floated. That is why this park was created.
