    In this video we try our had at reinforcing some of Icon plastic trays...after a few issues, it turned out pretty well!
    Time Stamps
    @0:00 Intro
    -While I have never been a fan of plastic trays...we might wind up being better served using them as opposed to trying to work around them. This is in large part due to the long pattern Icon ratcheting wrenches.
    @3:20 Plastic Fails
    -Give it time, and it will fail. Want to avoid, or simply delay that for as long as possible.
    @4:00 Cardboard and Foam
    -Not much, but better than nothing
    @4:45 Test Piece
    -Start with what you are least likely to need/use.
    @5:10 Drawer #2
    -Lots right, lots that could be better.
    --Hall Wrench Rack fits great, but minimizes the rest of the drawer space
    --Long Icon's on a US General Magnetic Strip
    @6:30 Kept the Plastic
    -Between this drawer, and some shelves, I have kept a lot of packaging...glad I did
    @6:58 Cleaning
    -If unused, clean up the trays before foaming
    @7:26 Shop Vac
    -Not easy with one hand...lowered the volume for headphone users
    @8:00 Cardboard Insert
    -Seems minor, adds a lot of strength
    @8:35 Customary Geese
    @8:40 12 Year old Foam
    -Yep, not going to spray
    @9:33 Foamin' Friday the 13th
    @9:40 GE Insulating Foam
    -Went with 1" Expansion
    @10:02 SAE Long Pattern Tray
    @10:20 Metric Stubby
    @10:34 SAE Ratcheting Stubby
    -This is the guinea pig...if it works well I'm going straight into the other trays
    @11:38 Better Ideas?
    -If you are super knowledgeable with this stuff...what would you do? Epoxy? Make a mold? Different foam?
    @13:04 First Run
    -Single layer test
    @13:58 Second Run - SAE Long Tray
    -Decided to fit the cardboard NOW as opposed to after the foam cures
    @15:28 Cardboard Placed
    -Went down easy with no immediate consequences
    @16:04 Weigh, or No Weigh
    @17:10 SAE Foamed and Cardboarded
    -Nothing crazy...yet
    @18:18 Live Foaming
    @19:55 Live Cardboard
    -Probably smarter to wait a bit like I did with the previous 2 trays
    @20:45 Not Done Yet
    -There is still foam, so I'm still going to spray
    --Maximizing my $3 investment, lol
    @21:32 Fourth Run - Metric Long Tray
    @21:55 1 Inch vs Big Gap
    -I'm inclined to say the 1" is a better choice...can always add layers...
    @22:55 Never Not a Problem
    -One-by-one the metric wrenches slowly slipped out of the tray
    --I think the impact is what pushed the foam out of the long pattern SAE tray...nothing major
    @23:53 Saturday Night Update
    -24 Hours later...how did it turnout?
    -Stack of projects...even added a bonus socket tray since the can still wasn't fully empty
    --Not sure I'll keep that tray, but didn't want to waste the foam
    @25:50 Solid and Happy
    -Amazing what a little foam can do...it just feels like a solid tray at this point
    --Foam and cardboard add a lot of rigidity
    @28:58 Metric Stubby Tray
    -Where it all started...you can tell from the sound what the foam added
    @30:08 Recap
    -Sometimes, even when you don't necessarily like the trays, they are the best option
    @33:00 Cart Updates
    -Currently in a state of flux as we tweak it for the best layout...stay tuned for videos on that
    @34:10 Drop Test
    @34:30 Your Thoughts
    @36:00 Conclusion

    Nice Job! I used Great Stuff foam to stop my Isuzu truck mirrors from vibrating and rattling. I drilled a hole in the bottom and top and filled from the bottom. I filled until the foam came out the top and stopped. 30 mins later my wife asked what I had done to the truck and I bragged about stopping the rattle. She then asked what was on the ground. When I went and looked both mirrors had busted out and we’re on the ground😂. Foam solved my rattling mirror problem by forcing me to buy new mirrors! Foam is Great Stuff when used sparingly!

    Watched your video last night and used your trick after picking up some icon sockets! Thought about sticking some magnets inside to keep them from rattling around while transporting. Next time. Thanks for the tip!

      Thanks...definitely worth doing if you like the trays and plan to use them long term. It is crazy how much more solid they are after this.

    I did this to all my cheap hallway doors when I bought my house. Works great for noise and insulation. Also made the doors feel not so cheap.

    With the exception of my extension trays, I've ditched most of my original ones in lieu of more space efficient solutions. I love how things are organized and presented in the trays, but they just take up so much space. Currently I'm mostly using Hanson peg rails and westling machine rails for sockets, and ernst wrench pros for wrenches.

      @lonestarmopars  4 месяца назад

      Yeah, I definitely prefer my other storage options, but for the wrenches, it just worked well (plus I was out of any other option for them). I'm still using these trays (this was filmed a long time ago) and am glad I spent the $3 in foam because my experience with the plastic trays is they always crack...just a question of when. A lot of the Capri sockets I got came with the plastic already busted. The Westling setup is gorgeous and you can never go wrong with Ernst.

    You can use a electric kitchen knife to shape the foam

    Ingenious and and cost effective solution. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I honestly think/hope you'll get greater longevity out these now. Lance, not sure if you ever discussed this on previous videos, but may I ask, how did you get interested in in Challengers, Chargers, Hemis, etc... You know, Mopar enthusiast stuff? I know that many people get the bug in their teens, or growing up with it because of family and friends. Personally, I am not a Camaro or Trans Am guy, but I know many who are. I like the old Dodge/Chryslers and Mustangs/Cobras.

      Thanks...it is a really nice, inexpensive upgrade to the trays. I don't think I've ever made any videos about myself, haha...just cars, parts, and tools. Maybe at some point I can do that. The old car show videos never really got many views, or interaction...might have been a few years ahead of the curve...but, they are still there.
      I was always into cars...Mopars just stood out. Best lines, best colors, best performance and from an under dog. When I got into them it was before the TV auctions drove prices up thru the roof. The Dukes of Hazzard was definitely an influence, but oddly enough I also really liked Darts and Dusters...toss in the winged cars, Roadrunner/Superbee, and a host of other cars from mild sleepers to wild, over the top drag cars and show cars and it was just my thing. It is a great hobby and I've met some good people thru Mopars. I have a lot of unreleased car videos and I'll eventually get to filming more, there just isn't near the same audience for that stuff as there is for tools, which I also like! I know a few Mopar guys that are fond of Shelby Cobras...a lot of them being Viper people. Oddly enough when I bought a cheap guitar (never really got around to teaching myself much), the bigger highlight was coming out to an old dude in a new Challenger that was parked by me...his thing was cars and guitars, lol.

    Foamy goodness...cool. I should try this on my 66 piece gear wrench bit ratchet set. I wonder if the HF lifetime warranty covers the packaging if things go south with the foam...I'm leaning towards no.

      @lonestarmopars  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, if your plastic is in good shape and you intend to keep using it long term, I would definitely give it a go. I bet they have never been asked to warrant the storage trays...It kind of stands to reason that they SHOULD, but I am betting they would default to the tool itself. That said, does Snap-On warrant the trays? It is an interesting inquiry on both fronts!

    • @lonestarmopars
      @lonestarmopars  4 месяца назад

      I honestly don't. I would ask the nicest employee, or someone that knows you are in the store a lot and just see what they say. You could almost think they should warrant it, although not likely...and at the same time, offering up a standalone replacement makes a ton of practical sense. I knew if I kept using it as is they would crack.

    • @lonestarmopars
      @lonestarmopars  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, really surprising how solid they turn out...still light weight too. I did quite a few other trays (some I'm not even using, but thought I might move the sockets back to them if I upgraded down the line)...A bunch of my Capri impacts came with the plastic already cracked...you can sort of work around that and get things back to functional.

    Has anyone tried to make a tray like this with spray foam, reverse engineering?

    • @lonestarmopars
      @lonestarmopars  4 месяца назад

      I had another video a few years back where I remember people mentioning making molds from the trays and then going to town. Can't remember the ideal setup, but it has been done. Spray foam would be similar, just might require a bit more end work to clean it up.

      @mab0852 4 месяца назад

      You spray it with pam or mould release if you're fancy and pour plaster in the back to make a plug. Once you have the plug, you can drill a bunch of tiny holes through it, and you've got a vacuum form. Heat some plastic, rig up a way to pull vacuum, and you can make as many as you want. Or, you could use the same plug, wax it really good, and coat it with flex tool or bed liner to make the tray. Then, foam in the back like in this video for stability. Lots of methods if you are somewhat crafty.
