    I met SOG in Detroit about 20 years ago. He was broadcasting TNF at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Very cool guy and kind enough to take a picture with my buddy between rounds.

    John Verderosa vs Hector Camacho, 1981-1982, would have been a heck of a fight.

    I interviewed Sean several times in late 1981 and early 1982 when I was in radio in the OKC area. I found him to be very gracious and humble. It was sad to see his rapid decline after he gave up his title to fight Andy Ganigan and lose that bout. There was a day Verderosa would not be competitive against Sean. But John, who was a heck of a fighter (and whose style seemed to be a precursor to Vinny Pazienza) caught Sean at the right time. And Pat O’Grady was right: Sean went on to a solid next career as a boxing commentator.

    O’Grady was a young man, but he was definitely looking shot between this fight and the earlier one with Andy Ganigan. Both those guys pole axed him. He was young, but 80+ fights is a lot of fights for a fighter of any age. Fortunately, he and his father were able to see the hand writing on the wall, and he left the sport with all his wits and a full adult life in front of him...and he DID become a better announcer than Ferdie Pacheco!!!

    Sean still deserves all the good he can get. Thanks Sean. OKC

      He could slug well and he had boxing skills and the guy had a lot of fights and they took there till but he's still da man and a solid Boxing TV host!

    Two very evenly matched boxers.but there styles couldn't be any more different. This day in age you would rarely see two fighters with these records risk it.

    Verdorosa had an ax to grind entering this fight. Pure coincidence both fighters ended up staying in the same hotel before the bout. Verdorosa extended cordial best wishes to O'Grady in the lobby and got a very snobby cold shoulder. It's all about karma.....

      I'd like to get O'Grady's side of the story. I also wonder how they feel about each other today.

    85 pro fights by age of 24!!!! and koed 70 men. that is some record by ogrady.
    both handsome men at start of fight. ogradys face is some mess at end.

    • @Thonolan000
      @Thonolan000 10 месяцев назад

      That record was extremely misleading. O'Grady had two wins against top ten competition, and those were by decision. Mostly, he beat up bums.

  • @spiderreed350

    If Sean just had a little energy left he could have stopped Johnny because the heat was totally punched out.great war though.

  • @spiderreed350
    @spiderreed350 2 года назад +2

    Sean took on lots of tough fighters that he didn't have to.he could have took easier paths to tittle shots but that wasn't his style.he fought all comers and I praise him for that

    Johnny the heat style was a lot more entertaining than Vinny Paz!!! Two totally different fighters

    And yet today Sean is in constant pain from broken hands, fingers since arthritis set in, ringing in his ears all the time, is back is hurting all the time and both his feet are in constant pain from running all the time, jumping in the rain etc. Yeah indeed that is what boxing does to the human body, not fun getting old in this sport. Just think of Mohamed Ali, Wilfredo Benitez, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Robinson, how their life ended.

    O Grady should have jabbed but he let Vederosa in the wheelhouse without having to get past a jab.

    O'Grady was very poorly managed. He was already a shot fighter by 24. Thanks to a grueling schedule and never working with a great trainer. He was definitely an underachiever.

      Leonides Martinez DEFINITELY WRONG! O GRADY WON THE TITLE OVER HILMER KENTY FROM KRONK GYM. KENTY WAS A GREAT FIGHTER. SEAN WAS MANAGED BY HIS FATHER WHO RUINED HIS CAREER. TOO MANY FIGHTS, BAD TRAINERS. IF ANGELO OR MANNY STEWARD HAD HIM, SEAN WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT. AS FOR BOOM BOOM, HOW WAS HE OVERRATED? HE WAS BEATING ARGUELLO. IF IT WAS 12 ROUNDS, HE WINS. A CHAMPION WHO LOST HIS EDGE AFTER KILLING KIM. BAD MANAGEMENT TOO. NO REASON TO FIGHT BRAMBLE. PRYOR, DAVIS, WERE BIGGER FIGHTS. THE HEAT COULD PUNCH. PARTIED TOO MUCH. NATURAL STREET FIGHTER!🥊🥊🥊

      @Your Neighbor Agree. Sean mismanaged for awhile. My memory was that Oklahoma did not have a boxing commission so was Sean fighting at an early age.

    • @EverettBurger

      Nah. I bet many of the guys who were champs during his career would have loved to have had his USA Tuesday Night Fights gig.
      Modern athlete: get in, retire while still young, get a media gig for decent money.

    Sean was cooked...hit Vedorosa with everything but the kitchen sink in the first 3 rounds but couldn't get him out of there. Had he been the fighter he was 2 years earlier, one of those straight right hands he landed 3-4 times in rounds 2 and 3 would have put Vedorosa out. When your punch, chin and stamina are gone, it's time to get out of the boxing game. I don't understand O'Grady's popularity as a boxing commentator over more than the last 30 years. He must have some sort of appeal I don't understand. Monotone, not particularly astute or insightful and the author of some bizarre commentary. CBS tried him out for a few fights but after he embarrassed himself during the Mancini vs Arguello fight, they sent him back to the USA network. I guess if Ferdie Pacheco can carve out a long career with a microphone in his hand, anyone can.

    • @xchindit
      @xchindit 2 года назад +1

      I remember his stint with CBS. It was his "fights pretty good for a wop" comment about Mancini that got him canned. I liked him as a commentator and he was a hell of a fighter. He and his family brightened up the boxing scene.

    • @MrCrystalcranium
      @MrCrystalcranium 2 года назад +2

      @@xchindit In that same fight, he said Mancini's corner was upset with the 3 "Spanish" judges because they would favor Arguello. One judge was from Los Angeles, one from Puerto Rico and the third from Mexico...and, or course, Arguello was from Nicaragua! Sean definitely had a bad day!
