May you rest in peace Willie. I'm 75 years-old and you were definitely the greatest all-around player I ever saw, and baseball has always been my number one sport. Willie Mays was one of a kind.

The GOAT, he hit above 300 for his lifetime, had 660 home runs, had over 1,900 RBIs and had 3,283 hits. He also had a lifetime slugging percentage of .557. Keep in mind he played in an era where the mound was higher and the pitchers had a huge advantage over the hitters. Willie Mays played in 24 All Star Games, won 12 golden gloves, stole 339 bases and won 2 MVP awards. But he will forever be remembered for that over the shoulder basket catch he made in the world series.

I went to a lot of Giants games (12 years) at Candlestick Park and he lost about 120 Hrs due to the wind and the average estimated number of Hrs lost by 2 years in Korean War is 70 for a total of 190. So maybe 850 was Willie's real number ....

Willie Mays was and always has been baseball to me.
I was born in 1947, in San Francisco, California, and raised in San Jose. The South Bay. At the age of 10 I began listening to the SF Giants on my crystal radio. The technology of the day for a kid interested in electronics.
To me the Giants was Willie Mays. I remember imagining his home runs and amazing left field catches. He defined baseball for me. A definition that has never changed for me. As time marched on baseball became a business as it has for all other professional sports. It sadly lost its Willie Mays luster.
Willie Mays will be missed in so very many ways. Goodbye Willie we loved you then, and love your memory now…

Same here. Born in 1947 in the Bay Area. Watched Willie and the Giants starting in 58 at Seals Stadium and then on to Candlestick. Many great memories. He was truly my childhood hero. I learned everything about playing baseball by watching him play. Hearing of his death today tore me up.

I grew up watching Willie play centerfield in San Francisco since the day the Giants arrived in 1958 when I was in elementary school, watching at Seals Stadium in downtown San Francisco under the towering glass of beer Hamms Brewery sign. Willie was my childhood hero. I saw him do so many unbelievable things over the years. The game in which he hit 4 home runs. The impossible catches against the centerfield fence followed pinpoint throws to home plate to stop runners from scoring or throwing them out. I practiced his patented technique of running full steam, head down to where he thought the ball was going to be , only looking up to catch it at the last second. I failed many times, but then I got it. Willie Mays taught me how to play baseball by watching him play. He was often said to be a natural talent, as if that was god-given, but that discounted his intelligence and dedication to perfecting his craft. He did things differently and better than others. Yes, I idolized him. He meant so much to me. We all must go eventually, but this still hurtsa lot. Play on, Say Hey Kid!

We ALL need to STOP for a minute, Willie Mays, my hero, died today. A MAN of honor, grace and humility that was born from his era. Served his country selfishly, would athletes of today do that? I am not sure. I had the honor of watching Willie play a few innings of a game in 1968 or 69. He replaced Barry Bonds because the crowd chanted for it. It was bat day for the kids.

I wept at his passing. From the time the Giants moved to SF, I listened to the game on radio announced by Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons, two of the best baseball announcers in the game. “Tell it bye bye baby” was the cry from them on home rums by the Giants. I saw many great ball players from 1959 through today: Mantle, Koufax, Clemente, Colavito,,Aaron, Banks, Gibson, Stargell and of course McCovey! All great players and many I didn’t name. But Willie Mays was special, my childhood hero, and now he is gone. RiP Willie!

It's notoriously difficult to compare players who played in different eras. I won't take away from or disparage anyone who's in the usual GOAT discussion, but in my humble opinion, Mr. Mays is it.
The stats, the awards, the records and accolades are impressive, but none so much as his obvious love for the game. RIP, Mr. Mays.

Think how many Homeruns he might have he missed two years of service in the army and played in Candlestick Park; where he Iost from 10 to 15 homeruns per year; multilpy that by 10 that is 100 to 150 homeruns he might have had. Also that the strong winds provented those homeruns, would have been hits hnstead of outs would have increase his life batting average at jeast 35 l points; there a lifetime batting average of 337 at least, maybe 342.🎉
