I have played Superstar Saga and Partners in Time before but Dream Team is still my favorite so that already makes that statement untrue.
Super paper Mario is kind of the best in my opinion as it controls similarly to a Mario game while keeping the variety gameplay the paper Mario games have, each world you explore is very unique and each character has their own stories they even say something different when you go back to each world. Though world 6 is kind of a shell out of wasted potential and the 100 battles could’ve been unlocked after beating the game as there could’ve been more with what they could do with the Japanese theme. But besides that it’s a pretty solid game. The thousand year door is just as good using the land’s culture and residents to tell a story while having a decent B plot as to give us a confirmation that the princess is alright as we’re fighting against the terrorist group that has her captive. Both are very solid games that pushes the aspects of paper Mario to its roots from the 64 game in terms of culture, gameplay, story, and uniqueness. Even though the 64 games goes flat in story in different parts. On the opposite ends you got sticker Star that has a nice mechanic that takes has some decent puzzles but each the story is kind of dry and a few areas have quite a lot of wasted potential for good puzzles. You got paint splash that has its moments in story and has very unique areas but it doesn’t push itself to its potential in terms of mechanics as it only relies on paint being a resource which is annoying when it’s required, speaking on resourcing the fighting mechanics are recycled in a terrible way needing paint to do good damage which can be a giant pain in the ass even when you need to go to fight a boss and I had to sell weak attacks, buy stronger ones, grind for higher coins and paint capacity, and fight the final boss 20 times because my attacks are too weak from lack of paint making or out of strong attacks it so it heals more than I could damage. And there’s origami king which has pretty unique areas and mechanics but the layout is very flat and too open making it feel like a chore exploring around, and the dialogue feels very artificial which effects the whole story. Not gonna mention the Mario and Luigi crossover cop out. In terms I love the paper Mario series as a whole though the newer titles may need more effort in balancing qualities and put more effort where it counts. And I hope Nintendo releases a new paper Mario game that pushes itself to be a good love letter to the series itself.
