    Tariffs protect local businesses...
    People only get worried because they might have to pay an extra dollar for a brand made in USA, but most of the money spent stays in the US... whereas buying from overseas takes most of the money out of our economy.

Trump will need to handle the next deal to keep them from striking. I think he's using tariffs only as a negitiation tactic to achieve a trade balance. The problem comes if the us can't export enough to china to balance the much larger chinese import, then you'll probably see tariffs to incentivise china to buy more.
    I've always wondered though. What prevents chinese products to be sold to the us by chinese neighboring countries without a tariff? Then it just becomes a shipping problem circumventing the tariffs.

    • @mikeh6286
      @mikeh6286 15 часов назад

      @cannedparmesan3996 Well there are lots of ways to defend tariffs (falsely). For example you can pretend you're helping workers in failing businesses. If they can't stand on their own they crumble eventually. All you're doing is getting them dependent on gov support = extremely bad.
      Also there are interests that want gov to punish their competition. They don't say that publicly but that's what they want. Also there's a gov machine that gets funded when you introduce tariffs. They're certainly for it, and would lobby for its survival and expansion.

    • @mikeh6286
      @mikeh6286 15 часов назад

      @@cannedparmesan3996 Also and most importantly to the question of why gov likes tariffs is because they can auction it off to the highest bidder. Between a small failing family business or a large corporation, who do you think has more chance of lobbying for its "poor" workers and "donating" to the campaign of some representative?

      @@Joybuzzard Normal procedure is though that local producers up their prizes as well to somewhere just below the prizes including tariffs so they can make more profit. Lots of mankind's history shows this, though there can be reasons for targeted tariffs and why they can work, generalized tariffs never showed that in past though.
      Even if works it would likely take 20 years to change the logistics and build factories and train people and then you still run into the same problem as was original problem that US can not produce at same prizes and quality as rest of world, so rest of world will not buy those goods ..... You would have to start way cheaper and better quality goods for that prize and that will be insanely difficult in US with current house prizes and such unless import more cheaply paid immigrants or lower wages drastically and then people would starve while in jobs. Hell that already happens now. Raising taxes on the rich and corporations, redistributing wealth to middle class and freeze price increases for 20 years will likely have way better outcomes, but no politicians around the world advocate that unfortunately, since shareholder value is overvalued.

    tariffs exist to spur on production in your home country, by making buying imported things too expensive, but there's no guarantee it will increase local production, it could end up just making everything too expensive.
