I'm a culprit of number 5 (Not spending long enough on the material). You get excited about learning a new move from Mike Bereal or Cory Henry and then four months later I'm hitting my head against the wall because I feel stuck. No my friend, you got too excited and didn't spend time on the material. "Whatever you wanna keep, you must repeat", that is going to be the motto for 2021. Great video doc.
Definitely man. I'm sharing this to all my church band members. This helps especially that I'm young and often feel stuck on how to practice and what to practice on the keys.
This has helped over the past four years in my growth unimaginable. If nothing but thought process alone. Learning to practice is the main thing.. thanks Sean!!
Idk if divine intervention or coincidence but this is the EXACT video I needed to watch. I've been a little disappointed in my rate of progress lately and had spent the past few days sulking.
I really get it. My expectations of running before I can jog or walk are truly unachievable. Fact!! That inner anxiety of needing to get somewhere quickly needs to be confronted daily for my temperment. I need to value myself to take the time, in the same way that my golf coach took me step by baby steps to achieve a continuing life of improvement. Gotta get the book you referred to.
I watched one of your videos that mentioned the difference between practicing and preparing for a gig. That point you emphasized was very crucial for me. Thanks again!
That’s Crazy...I got the urge to get atomic habits a few weeks ago because I was dealing with the same things. Felt I was being pulled every which way and practice time wasn’t as prevalent. God Bless you Sean 🙏🏾
Bro I just found your channel today ! It’s amazing ! It’s very rare to see a musician cover the psychological aspect of music. Mentality is everything. Thank you so much ! ☺️
I read the book a month or two ago and it was so insightful. You truly have to fall in love with whatever you want to improve at, and then it will become less hard trying to accomplish. One other part I loved in the book was when it mentioned to stop worrying too much about the goals and focus more on the systems. When you make an authentic and detail system/practice schedule to achieve your goals, then the goals will start to manifest on their own. That was very prophetic in my opinion. Thank you for this Sean!
Brilliant advice. Your membership site is brilliant as it provides pointers for systematic progress. Although I have been playing for years, I have had to go back and learn stuff which are foundational 🙌🏾. Glad to say, I am obsessed!
Thank you so much Sean! This has been my problem all along. My mind struggles to focus because I'm always thinking about all of the songs and progressions I need to learn and sometimes I end up not getting much done. This has helped me tremendously. I do better with a plan and schedule rather than just practicing whenever. I've already grown just from the time this video was published. It seems when I have too many choices I end up not making a choice..It's overwhelming at times. I'm working on it.
I'm stealing all of these because they are great. One thing that has helped me and took me to another level was buying the sheet music and checking behind what I heard and played by ear. Even if you can't read you can buy the digital version and it plays the music for you on an app. I just bought Lord you are good by Todd Galbert and stole alot new chords and progressions from it. I've previously learned difficult parts Donald Lawrence John p kee and James Hall by sheet music as well. It's not that hard to read, you can use the technique you learned in elementary school to write the notes from the chords shown on the sheet.
Incredible insight. Thank you for your heart to want to truly help musicians, by giving us some challenging truths so that we can grow. Thank you my brother.
Wow! 🤯 I’m definitely implementing the information to my personal goals! Mind you, I’m not a musician! Request, podcast, or write a book perhaps? Sheesh!
@@SeanWilsonPiano It was really helpful because a good number of the reasons youve mentioned have been whats hindered by growth. Definitely going to buy the book as well
This video has so many gold nuggets and very helpful Sean.. I need to watch it a gain with a Notebook. The Point are really valuable. I love the book "Atomic habits" its just sets the mind right.
Sean, thank you for the Goal Chart. To be honest I'm more interested in learning jazz and being a good jazz pianist/keyboardist than learning Gospel. Thank you, Blessings 🙌❤👏😀
Hey Sean I love this. Excuse my ignorance but I'm struggling to make the distinction between practicing songs and working on vocabulary. I might be wrong but I seem to recall you saying that we expand our vocabulary by memorising songs. I'm just struggling to understand the difference between the two as you refer to them in this video. Also, do you time manage a practice i.e. 5 mins fundamentals 5 mins Songs 5 mins Vocabulary? I seem to recall you using the two minute rule with a student in one of your other videos. Apologies Sean, I'm overflowing with questions as I watch your channel A LOT!!!
Hey man great question actually. And you’re right the distinction could be clearer on the vid. You learn vocabulary from songs. My vocabulary is the amount of chords I know and can use in various contexts. So you wanna practice using various chords in different contexts. So for this video, you are getting vocab from songs yes, but taking it to other songs and situations is where you extend that vocab and deepen it
Ah okay. I think I get it. It's a bit like learning a pentatonic lick and figuring out how you can plug it into different songs and solos. Except in this case you mean chords and inversions. I hope I've got that right. Cool stuff. Thanks Sean.
No, but you would benefit more by studying Dominant chords, since Tritones ARE dominant chords without the bass note. I have a course on Dominant Chords

Great video doc.
That’s still me, I still rotate songs often but have one or two long term. Best of both worlds doc
There's also this phrase sean,if u dont use it u loose it... meaning u should always apply wat u learn.
Always
Definitely man. I'm sharing this to all my church band members. This helps especially that I'm young and often feel stuck on how to practice and what to practice on the keys.
Yeah, feeling stuck is common... especially if folks end of teaching themselves... gotta have direction. Please share bro!

I think it's something we all fight. So I made this one personal, but only after I went through the struggle

What are the songs can you recommend for a beginner to start with?
I was going to practice in all 12 keys one key per month is it better to break it down to less keys to get a better feel?
Yeah, I wouldn't recommend doing more than 2 keys at once. Preferably one
We gotta go all in
