I think their purpose was to disrupt the Russian army and create a bit of a buffer zone.
I also think that you're right and that they didn't expect the success that they have achieved. That means if they go too far into Russian territory they will have supply problems as they didn't plan for it.
They need to proceed with caution and consolidate their gains.

    • @Ofasia777

Which is more or less exactly as it is. Ukrainians understand the war could last years with endless branching scenarios, so just taking endlessly favorable fights (as far as possible) makes sense. Planning is necessary and goals are cute but it can only accomplish so much for an army lacking redundancy in everything and particularly the airforce, such as Ukraine.

This guy is exactly right. I studied SC strategy for many years, and only the highest level players would send out a small attack force whilst under siege, and then call that attack force back once the enemy is forced to use resources to respond to it. It is a much better cost to effect ratio to do it that way than to not most of the time.
Of course if the taken area isn't being attempted to be retaken by the enemy, the it's a low cost and worthwhile to keep it. You just have to react to what gets you the most done for the least cost at all times. If it's effective, keep going. If it gets bogged down and costly, change course.

RU already "took the bait" several times, clearly their defense minister (finance majors don't study military tactics) decided the most economical way to send troops into it's own terrritory is buy bus, which are easily destroyed over and over no matter how many children you send, you could send all your buses and you'd lose all of them, my guess is that they are just content in counting their own bodies...

Yesterday there were videos (Ruzzian Telegram channels) of Ruzzian soldiers being packed onto trains and moved from the East front into Kursk. So, it's not a question of IF they will bite the bait, but of how much they will bite. The entire video is a waste of time, as it operates on several days old info... For example, yesterday they hit 2 bridges in Kursk with small fire. No mention to that. Just now, they have just hit hard onto one of the bridges in Kursk taking it down. By the time that gets evaluated into DW it will be old.
