How To Convert HLG Footage to REC.709 in Premiere Pro

If you shoot footage in hlg3 bt2020 colors and it doesn't look right, I can help. In this tutorial, I'll walk you through how to fix the colors and make them appear normal in Adobe Premiere.
When you import hlg footage, it doesn't look right because of the difference in color spaces between hlg (meant for HDR) and rec 709 (normal video). To fix this, we'll change the color space of the sequence to rec 709, and convert the clip colors to rec 709. If you shot in bt2020, you'll need a conversion LUT, and I'll provide a link where you can download it.
After you download and extract the LUT, I'll show you how to add it to Premiere. Once you follow these steps, your footage will appear normal, although it will have a flat color profile that can be color graded for even better results.

Finally. Thank you kid man!
Bro you just save my life my wedding shot is finally normal 😭💥
Indeed, still lot of people watch on SDR. Specially windows users. Same as many years ago, people discussing how to apply colour filters to make black and white image look better. I remember yellow filters on a lens were improving contrast in shadows )
Thanks alot
Thank you very much for your understanding.
You're welcome

Hey! nice vid and straight to the point, thanks ^^
But
i have a question: Does the LUT is a previous "lumetri config" made by somebody else?
If yes, then that means that i can do a config by myself?
if no, that means that i have to rely in third party LUTs made by someone or made officially by camera manufacturer?
Thanks beforehand ^^
Hi, great video ! But Do I need to replicate this to every rushs ??? Sometine i got 40 rushs
thank you super
Could we vice versa change all the settings to match the 2100 HLG? Because when I have rec 709, my video looks washed out. When I change it to 2100 HLG it looks good
Great tutorial! Will this process also work for HLG3 footage?
Yes
this is the tip what I really want, its soooooooooooooooo helpful! thanks!
How to do this in premiere 2020 version
Thanks a lot 👍
I've been struggling with this kind of problem 😅
Happy to help
Much appreciated! One question, if I record my footage in HLG, and my sequence was already in REC. 2100 HLG. Why shouldn't all my footages automictically show correct color?
You'll most likely EXPORT your video in rec 709 so your colors will look okay in your timeline but be messed up after export
Does this apply for rec2100?
My premiere pro doesnt have the option to change the working color space ):
This option has been added to the latest version of premiere pro 2020
how can i do this but not one by one but all clips ?
Tuyệt vời
What is the point in shooting in HLG if you export it in SDR for both colour space and log gamma?
Dynamic range
Great Video! just asking why dont we just shoot rec 709 rather than bt 2020 if it more easy?
Hlg has better dynamic range. Also it's just useful to know how to deal with this sort of footage if you're a video editor, you might receive hlg footage from a client and need to know how to color correct it.
it definitely is@@To_The_Point_Tutorials
Is there difference in converting from bt 2020 to rec 709 or should I just shoot for rec 709 anyways
Bt2020 has a wider color range than 709. Technically you're getting more color info with bt2020. This can reduce banding and give you more flexibility when color grading. Still not as good as 10bit footage but it's something 😄
Hii,
PLEASE HELP!
My Sequence Setting doesn't show any 'Working Colour Space' option. Neither does the Interpret Footage has a 'Colour Management' tab. I have ticked the Display Colour Management option in the General Settings as well. I have a PPro 2020 version.
What should I do so that my Colour Management Option gets displayed in my PPro??
Hi. Really not sure in this situation. It could be because you're using an older version. If updating it is not an option for you then try to find some blpg posts or tutorials about this from 2020 or even earlier.
ti amooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
GOD BLESS YOU!! I was lowkey getting so annoyed with Premiere Pro and my camera... 🔥
So just have HLG3 with rec709 and you wouldn't have to worry about it, got it
dont work
best solution: shoot in rec709. HLG and HDR is not worth it
HLG and PQ are amazing. Specially if you use capable TV or a phone. Not worth it mood comes from windows users, who just see broken color and wonder why we need it.
Sorry why shoot in 2020 if you’re going to convert to 709? Just learning this sure
Bt2020 colors have more data for color grading than rec709
