  • Shibamata is a town made popular by Tora-san from the Japanese series, “Otoko wa Tsurai yo” or “It’s Tough Being a Man”. The film is centered around Shibamata, which is the hometown of Tora-san.
Taishakuten sando is a shopping street that leads to the Buddhist Temple, Daikyo-ji or better known as Shibamata Taishakuten. Dotted along the street are numerous shops that sell a variety of food and snacks including kusa dango (mugwart dumpling) and rice crackers.
Upon entering the gate at Shibamata Taishakuten, take note of the dragon looking pine tree fronting the main hall. Be sure to check out the intricate carvings and depict the Lotus Sutra scriptures.
After your visit to the temple, take a break at Yamamoto Tei which is about a 10 minute walk. This former residence of Mr. Yamamoto, a wealthy business owner, is now a tea house. It was built in the 1920’s and incorporates western design. The garden here was ranked number three in 2021 by Sukiya Living Magazine: The Journal of Japanese Gardening.
We had time to check out the café in Candy Candy Museum, but did not get chance to take video inside.
