  • Attempting to cure the tapping noise which has developed in the top end of the engine, a 5mb 2.25 petrol engine - a common problem on older Land Rovers.
Be aware of the changes that were made to components over the years, imperial and metric threads etc. In this case, it's a 1983 109" with metric threads in the cylinder head.
Part 3 looks at fitting the new camshaft, chain and tappets.

In the clip it looks like you measured the skew gear at 20 degrees from the back of the engine. not the Front. Could that explain the error?

180 degrees out because the cam and chain timing is set with #1 valves open where as the distributor is timed with #1 valves closed.

The cam timing is fine, however... at some time the distributor drive dog had been reversed, this putting the rotor 180 out. I only discovered this on trying to fit a replacement distributor a couple of years later. I pulled the old dizzy off and expected to just drop the new one in, but it wouldn't go.. The P/O had just fitted the leads to the rotor cap 180 out so to speak, so it worked.... Now all as it ought to be.

Just timed my cam and noticed that the key way in the cam sprocket sets the cam lobes so they are up - thus opening the valves. I figured that was timing the cam. Not on the firing stroke.
Piston at top dead centre etc.
So this accounts for your timing being wrong. Turn the crank until the cam is correctly placed - that would be another rotation of the crank. I’ll let you know the result.

Take a look at your video- your cam lobes can be seen in the valve open position. Correct for cam but not for ignition timing.

Yep that worked. Interesting your distributor dog being changed. That would certainly stuff it up.

HI did you just reverse your distributor drive dog and leave it that way to fix the 180 degrees out issue? (mine is have same issue).. or did you fix your issue another way?

Did you renew the locking wire on the tappet guide lock bolts?

Good afternoon. Tell me please where in this engine of a tag on the crankshaft and a cam-shaft(average) Thank u. And these tags coincide with the diesel.

Same as the diesel version right ? Stupid question I think :) but had to ask

Now don't quote me on this, but I believe late Series 3 engines have the same cam shaft, earlier diesel 2.25's had a different cam between diesel and petrol. It's a long time since I had to read about that..
The followers, cages and tappet blocks are the same.
