Good info and video. I have seen breakaways with like 30s advantage at 15km to go on a flat stage this years tdf. That wil fail normally. It were 4 riders, got down to 10s at 10km or so, but they managed to outsprint the peloton. That is impressive, considdering they were like in the breakaway for 150km or so. I've also seen 2minute breakaways being caught in the last 20km. Or the last one or two riders in the break too just get cought 50m from the finish. It all happens, but a breakaway is at a disadvantage the more aerodynamics play a role and the course is straight. If it is ultra hilly (above 7% average) or just ultra narrow, technical and twisty then the breakaway is at an advantage because a small group can navigate tight and twisty roads better than a large peloton plus on hills the peloton has no aero advantage, which is why they catch the break so often on the flats
