Hey guys, my main IG account got compromised and disabled, so if you wanna show some love and check out my new main account @hallofbirds, that would be awesome. Thanks for all the support here on YT and over on Instagram, it really means a lot.
Do you know how to video night sky? Some super fun and interesting tech flies behind our house from time to time, but I can't get good night sky video with my s21. Any suggestions? It's so frustrating. I waited two years for them to start flying experimental stuff again, and then I couldn't video it.
I envy that you’re in a place with no light pollution
Yeah, it's awesome, and I definitely don't take where I live for granted!
@@BrentHall I’ve been trying to nailed the Milky Way for two summers now, I’ve learned a ton and have the settings down…..then discovered how much light pollution affects getting it. You got great content my dude, keep it up please.
I'm grateful to live in Reno. About an hour or two in three directions (N,E,S) and u can see the Milky Way.
@@BrentHall bro i live in a very low light polluted area but i still don't see the milky way. Why? Just to give u idea I'm a space enthusiast and i know when to look for the milkyway. I know all of the constellation and there time and location. But seeing the milkyway is a dream for me. I can giveu my location if u want to help. I have no idea how much less light pollution u need to see it. I'm so annoyed and jealous
@@Zain0_0 it's hard to see with your eye so the other way you can do it is by using your camera
"This is take 2 because I forgot to plug the mic" Classic Brent, that's the cool part of your videos, that you're a normal guy struggling like us haha.
lol, yeah, that's how I roll...space cadet :P
I have a normal s21 and I got crystal clear images of the milky way and the big dipper.
Shutter speed- 15
ISO- 1600
Could u share it?
I also have a normal s21 and was hoping to apply the tips from this video for an upcoming trip. Glad to hear it's doable!
I can't seem to get anything worth editing at 1500.. too much noise
Bro can u give me details
great job! Last summer my daughter was learning to drive. She needed some night hours so we drove an hour away and got into the darkest sky we could get to. I used my S10 plus and got some great pictures of the milky way. Planning on trying again this summer.
Nice! I hope you can find some more dark, clear skies!
what settings did you use?
Thank you for sharing this. Really more and more people need to know astrophotography is a lot more easier than they though and in fact for them. If only they know those tiny tips.
I actually got to capture the milky way for the first time tonight with my ultra.
Unfortunately it's not that bright in my area. It's actually rare for it to be visible at all most of the time unfortunately. But it was actually slightly visible tonight.
Im glad that in my "town" the streetlights go dark after 22:00 "10pm" so it's almost completly dark at nights
6:32 was a comet? Or a bug flying around?
Very surprised what a phone can take.
Thanks brent
I'm from india, i live in city thats why due to light pollution i can't take photos like u, i took pretty fair astro 😅
u have teached me a lot and i'm still learning 🙂🇮🇳
Photographing THE GALAXY With The Samsung GALAXY S21 ULTRA, that's right way to say, lol
@ 6:27 What is that bright yellow line shape (at the left most side of the picture)? Was that a meteorite that moved during that 30 second exposure time?
Thanks, Brent. Love your work (and love New Mexico).
If you got phone that support manual camera settings and have nice camera you can do it. You obviously need sky without light pollution. Recently i installed gcam7.1 that have built-in astrophotography mode really easy to take milky way photos.
Where do I find these settings on my Nokia flip phone?
Wow always I enjoy watching your videos 👍👍👍 !!! I will try to do with my S21 Ultra !!!
For samsung getting nice shot shot means s21 ultra can get those images you want!
I'm a Huawei astrophotoger because these cameras in Huawei phones like P30pro and even Huawei p40 are so impressive for astrophotography. My Huawei p40 photographs as many stars as my Canon 700D dslr as I just can't choose which is better because the quality is fantastic from both.
I'd say s21 ultra is pretty good what you got and it's fun getting great shots with any camera. Some dslrs aren't good enough for astrophotography as I've tried few and they were OK but it's what you know which is really good.
I choose Huawei for smartphone astrophotography as I've taken incredible shots with the Huawei p20 smartphone and I recently got the Huawei p30pro and the quality is fantastic then I bought Huawei p40 and I must say its as good as my Canon 700D. Soon I'm getting Huawei p40pro and I've seen shots from it looking fantastic even in ultra wide.
Smartphone cameras has come along way and keep getting better each year.
The S20 Fe can take night shots fairly well with enough exposure and manipulation in the pro settings.
Even milky way?
I used to be able to take great star pictures when I had my V30. Ever since I switched to my Note 10+ , I still can't get the hang of it. Maybe I'll do better with the Ultra 22?
Just appreciate your work👍👍
Many thanks!
So will these set up work for a Samsung 10 if I go into pro mode with the 800 and 30 sec and go manually? Will be in Big Bend tonight and moon is waning...BUT don't own a tripod..can sort of place on a table still was at Marfa lights viewing last night and the milky way was awesome there ( minus the bathroom lights)
I don't got all those settings present they remove them
Love your videos
Thank you so much, I appreciate it!
Nice to see Brent, we have had the wettest may possible here in wales, so no chance of Astro, your sky must be amazing.
Oh bummer! It's only rained once, for less than 5 minutes, here the entire year so far. Yeah, I definitely love the skies out here. :)
What is the camera’s name of the phone 😁i want to download it on my iPhone x please my friend😅
Handshake: Thanks, as I have an S21 Ultra, and this is great and very useful information and look forward to watching more.
CAVU.
Good video mate. Im pretty impressed with what this phone can do so far. The "past my bedtime" comment gave me a laugh, Im the same when Im out there recording. :)
lol, yeah, the older I get the earlier I want to go to bed.
Please I've been trying to find a way for my non ultra version to take a picture even similar to this, but all the searches come up as ultra. I don't have an ultra please I just wanna take pretty star pictures
Hey Brent I was wondering since now we can use the wide-angle lens on our S21 Ultra have you used that for astrophotography?
I used in this video, and I talked about it a bit...
@@BrentHall I'm going to be watching it in a few minutes I'm at work I was just wondering thanks for putting out these videos I love watching your content. Wish I could do that for a living
hello, take it easy, I want to ask you something, please can you answer, I made the same settings, I took it with my phone, the stars are not so much, but there is a bit of weather, not like yours, it turns pink after you take it and white stars appear in the pink sky, can you tell me why? 🌌☺️
Glad I saw your video! I got same awesome pictures on Mauna Kea.
Oh man, that's awesome, I'm glad the video helped!
Amazing Video as always!!🔥🔥🔥
Thanks man!
Is there a instruction about using the pro video or taking a picture in the city at night.
I went over pro video mode in my latest S23 Ultra Pro Mode video. I know it's technically a newer phone, but with the One UI updates, the controls and layouts and everything are pretty much the same. Maybe give that video a look and see if it helps.
You should try to stacking. This will drastically decrease the noise. You could try sequator, it is free and pretty easy to use
I stack images a lot actually, but usually only from images taken with my big cameras and telescopes. I just don't personally do serious astrophotography with my phone, so I haven't taken the time to do it.
Nice! I’m excited for the phone telescope video.
Is 10sec exposure in Samsung a52s can shoot milky ways too?
Did it work? Lol
I have the same phone, I'm planning to try it tonight
Thank you for this video. Really helpful
You're welcome, I'm glad it was helpful!
You can fix part of the problem by not using the camera to run the shutter, just enable the voice feature and say "Cheese" - or use a bluetooth camera release.
But why didn't you use the 108 megapixels in pro mode? If I'm not mistaken there is how to use it, you just need to choose the photo format and then put it in option ( 3:4 108MP ) and that's it, after that just enjoy the details.
Portuguese:
Mas por que não usou os 108 megapixels no modo pro ? Se não me engano tem como usar , vc só precisa escolher o formato da foto e então colocar na opção (3:4 108MP) e pronto , depois disso é só aproveitar os detalhes .
You can't shoot in the 108mp in pro mode. Also, when photographing anything in low light, with high isos, such as the milky way, you don't want high megapixels.
I have put settings you suggest on my s21 and it always looks like the flash is on
What telescope do you use for those pictures?
we are trying to start but the stuff I bought, I found out later is total garbage.
Up until recently I was using a Celestron Nexstar 5SE. I've made a couple videos with it, you might check out my astrophotography playlist if you're interested.
Can you please explain on how to find out the direction of Milky way galaxy?
Glad i came by your video, I'm going to the pyrenees in september and was hoping to get some nice pictures of the stars😄 so this is very useful
Oh nice, I'm glad the video helped! Have fun out there. That's definitely a bucket list area for me someday!
How do you edit the picture to make it more defined colorful and so on?
Will this work on a s21 regular?
I set the settings on my S21 Ultra exactly as shown in this video and my picture looks nothing like that. What's the trick?
Brent, can I ask where your excellent video on eye focus using second back button focus r5 and r6 has gone please, i needed to recheck my settings and cant find it!! cheers from Bob.
It hasn't gone anywhere, it's right where I left it.
ruclips.net/video/5l5feoIUmdI/видео.html
I only have an s10e does it work?
Does it work with the s10 + ?
great job. nice video.
Many thanks!
Did you have a sample of the manual focus on mountain as well vs slightly off it?
What about taking a bunch of raws and stack them using DSS? Have you tried it with S21?
Yes, you can definitely do that, but no, I haven't done it with the phone. I do use DSS a lot for my mirrorless and telescope setups though. It's a great program.
@@BrentHall I'm gonna try this some day with a good weather and let you know if it's worth an effort. I wonder how much you can really get from this tiny but powerful sensor
Dude set a 2 sec timer .... even though phone is held on a tripod there will be some macro movements while you touches the shutter button will affect badly to the final image
lol, yeah, you can add that to list of things I forget to do. Ah well, that's what happens when you're rushed and not paying attention I guess.
@@BrentHall haha no worries 🙌.....
I was out there last night too till the sun came up trying to get a good shot but I live right next to Las Cruces and White sands missile range so there is absolutely no where to get out of the light but I managed to make it work with some good editing stay warm out there!
Oh yeah, there's definitely a lot of light pollution down there! I can't wait till White Sands opens the backpacking permits again though, I definitely want to get back out there for milky way. Probably won't happen until next summer though.
@@BrentHall that's funny you say that I just moved back here from Colorado and I called them just the other day the latest that they are staying open is 11:00 doesn't really give you much time. Really appreciate you making these videos brother I've been out there till about 4:00 in the morning last 3 days in a row it's amazing how quick time goes by
Your videos are really good
Many thanks!
Hey can u do photo binning/combining part 2, of the moon either with 100x or 50x or 30x in S21 Ultra, want to see the end result. got so tempted after seeing a guy from my country took 50,000 images and combined into 1 photo, the moon photo was awesome.
u can buy external fan cooler from blackshark called fun cooler pro or 2pro to keep the phone cool for long shooting, available in usa
That's pretty crazy! I personally wouldn't bother with it though, but that's because I'd rather shoot the moon with my 800mm or my telescope.
Excited for the telescope vid, would've liked to see a result with some stacking but can't complain.
Great vid!
That milky way photo with the Canon😍
Beautiful mommy I love you 😊
thanks for the Video. Which phone would you recommend? iphone 12 pro max or S21 Ultra?
I've never used an iPhone, so I couldn't say anything about it. I've heard good things about them though. It just depends on what OS you want to use. All I can say is I'm very happy with the S21 Ultra.
Well, I guess the galaxy phone is living up to its name!
If you didn't want the wide angle, have you tried the milky way with a telephoto lens? Wondering what the difference may be with the moment 58mm
I like the focal length of the main lens for the milky way the most. I've thought about trying milky way shots with the moment tele, but the problem is when you increase focal length, you decrease max exposure time due to the relative motion of the earth, so I'd want to set it up on a tracker (which I might do for a future video).
@@BrentHall thanks for the reply! I'm still on the newish side of photography, and own an S20+ with a moment 18mm and 58mm getting into some more casual stuff. Keep up the great, simple explanations, you've taught me lots!
Why not shoot several frames at shorter shutter speed and then glue them together in Siril, for example?
all the frames will cary low amount of light and that wont give good result
this process work on bright object like moon
Off topic, but what lenses did you have on the big boy cameras?
I was using the Samyang RF 14mm, the RF 35 f/1.8, and the EF 16-35 f4.
Why is my focus different? My s21 has center, multi and manual but I can't figure out which to use to set focus on inifnity.. there's no mountain symbol at all
This feature is no longer available since Android 12. I contacted Samsung for the same problem.
Just wondering if the phone get warm after shooting for awhile?
Not enough to cause concern for overheating or shutdown.
It just looks like it's day for me when I use the same settings how do I fix this?
Too much light pollution! Like I said in the video, you can't just copy my settings and expect the same results unless you are in the same or similar area as me. You'll need to get to darker skies. Also, be aware that if you're in the northern hemisphere, the milky way is setting for the year and won't be back above the horizon until next spring.
s21 ultra 108 megapixel no manual mode ????
The results are actually way too good man just don’t compare it with dslr cameras
Man i wish less expensive phones had these cameras
Another amazing content. I'm so jealous 😉 I just change for s21 ultra and try to learn about smartphone photography.
At least I have a few question.
1. Do you have any problems. With slow motion video? Mine stop every frame for milisecond so when I watch it after recording it's not smooth. The normal video is OK.
2. Could you recommend any app to edit video on phone
3. To edit photos I use lightroom , is there another good app for phones?
Thanks, I appreciate it! I don't really mess with the slow mo video on the phones and I don't edit video on phones either. I've heard Adobe Rush is good but haven't tried it. For photos, when I do edit on my phone, I usually use Snapseed. I've made a few videos about it.
I just bought an s20fe and tried the moon shot. Feels like bullshit marketing to me but your results are better than expected.
To me on the base model s21 the ultra wide cools everything off and looks really blue.
I wish you also tried it with the ISO at 400 or even lesser. Anyway
Hello bro ,I have s21ultra ,why it takes seconds to capture night scenes??
If you're shooting in night mode, then it's taking a bunch of images and averaging them together, that takes a few seconds for it to compile.
wait.. phones can capture the actual galaxy's color's?? That's cool as hell.
Waiting for your review on the s22 ultra! 🔥
Well, I pre-ordered it yesterday, so it should be here in a couple weeks.
Want to see you try the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Working on it. :)
Waiting for s22 ultra ❤
I pre-ordered mine this morning. It'll be here in a couple weeks.
Hello from Russia... 😁👋
Lake Baikal
Imagine they do a phone with 1000x zoom
I like to use voice command so i dont have to tap the shutter in fear of wiggling the phone
I think 30 seconds is too much for the star trail
so instead of 800 ISO, it is better maybe 1600 ISO and 15 seconds
or 800iso 15seconde, but stacked
To see according to the light polution
And yes infinity is not precise for the focus, it is 2 to 3 notches before the end that it is best
Thanks for the video, it's great to see you!
Yeah, that would have been better probably. I just didn't want to drop down to 15 sec, but it would have made for a slightly sharper image, albeit a bit noisier.
@@BrentHall the other solution is to stay with the R5, ha, ha, ha
but if not for these smartphones, S20 and S21, stacking remains a good approach to have a little better
Finally it's an idea
What do you say ?
redmi note 13 pro plus please I would like to take the photos at night on the redmi note 13 pro plus cell phone greetings from chile 🇨🇱
This is awesome, just found and subscribed to your channel. I have a huge fascination with astro but never had a good night to try with my 6d (always have to drive a ways out of the city and everytime it's overcast). Just got a note 20 ultra and lol if the opportunity arises I definitely want to give this a shot.
Thanks man, I appreciate that! Hopefully you'll get some dark, clear skies this summer.
Can you try Pixel 6 Pro?
Yep, I pre-ordered it. Hopefully it'll be here sometime this week or early next week.
@@BrentHall Nice. Supposedly it does relatively well in night shots
Geart video
youpiiiiiiiiiiiii
My pictures come up all white
Sounds like you overexposed. Probably too much light pollution.
Thanks, I have an S21 ultra and have a tonne of light pollution 😭
Not able to get same results with all things same
Well, unless you were at the same location at the same time as me when I took the shot, then all things definitely weren't the same. Like I said in the video, you can't just copy my settings and expect the same results. Where are you shooting, when are you shooting? Is the moon up? Is the milky way up? Is it in your frame? Are you in dark enough skies, or is there a bunch of light pollution? Lot's of varying conditions will affect your image.
@@BrentHall no sir I didn't mean that like i am getting very poor photos in very good scenery
you look like elon musk lmao
. . . 😶
'sup Elon
Can we shoot it from light polluted city 😒
Highly doubtful.
Unfortunately not. To get good shots of the milky way, in any camera, you just have to get away from light pollution.
you should make a tik tok account
That and Twitter are just two things I don't think I'll ever do...😅
Shw us the screen we don't want to see your face
Brent hall i wanna thank you most cuz i know the pro mode from your video where you describe iso, aperature and shutterspeed by 📐 triangle form. Really 😊🙏 thanks
Glad I could help!
