13:20, welcome to our world Rick. We are playing long clubs into all but the shortest par 4’s. Great video, really enjoyed that. What a course as well! Looks stunning👌
True but usually under much better conditions here in America. I can't imagine playing in the Moist air of England on a Cold day when the Wind is against you on most of the holes. This is playing like 8500 yards the day Rick was there. Here in America the PGA Tour follows the Sun (usually) so the weather is usually fairly nice or even Hot when they play these long courses; makes a huge difference in the Ball Carry.
I love the fact a player and coach of your tremendous ability shares a game like this , warts and all . If I teed of Saturday I’d probably wrap up Tuesday morning!
That's mental! I've played some long Par 6 holes in Thailand, but that's giving you an extra shot already, not just stretching out the par 3/4/5 to its maximum allowable distance. I'm sure most of us would be shooting a cricket score round there!
Aye, reminds me of a fancy course I used to play called Greensboro National Golf Course. I traveled there just to see some of the shocking holes and gorgeous houses along side the course. There was this one a mate told me about, the house was 4 million dollars and completely golf themed with a statue of a golfer hitting a driver. Even better the statue was surrounded by smaller statues of 1 to 1 scaled replicas of golf sets. We guess the sets are what the owner has played the course with. Super cool course though. Id recommend even if it was a plane flight away. A truly shocking and long course at just under 7100 yards, 72 par, 73.8 rating, and a 142 slope rating. 11/10 Id recommend anybody to go there and play 18 any day.
I have noticed many times over my 60 years of playing golf that golf is certainly a hard game , even for a low handicap player like myself or a pro golfer like you Rick... I appreciate you having the guts to post the "not so good' shots and rounds that have gone all wrong... I really enjoyed your break 75 rounds earlier this year !! Thats usually my goal also from the senior tees (im 73)... i sometimes play with my son in law and his son and play from the Mens tees and had to sink a 10 footer on the 18th for a 79 last Saturday here in Green Bay Wisconsin (it was cold and windy) which for me was a bit like you playing that 7800 yard course in the cold , windy conditions,,, this summer , i had a 3 under 69 from the senior tees (5600 yards) which are about a 1000 yards shorter than the mens tees .. I have watched you, Matt, Pete and Carter since you all started out on youtube and its been a blast!! hope you all keep it up for years to come

Hey Rick. Could you look to add yardages in the top right in addition to the par? Would increase your audience's ability to relate more with the shots you are taking.

I always performed my best when someone told me a course was really hard. Inversely, I show up to a short course with no trouble and I shoot like crap because I just get lazy.
I dont even play golf but how can a par 4 even be close to 500 yards? That sounds line it should be a par 5 or smth. I feel like the dificulty comes from having to make such long shots you start sacrificing accuracy for distance
Rick on a 7900 yard course feels like me on a "Hey let's play the blues today" course :) Thanks for making me feel better about being 200+ on every par 5!
I have learned to LOVE starting out with a double bogey. It actually relaxes me as I know that I have gotten my blowup hole out of the way early and I can now enjoy the rest of he round. If I start with a birdie I feel pressure to maintain that level of performance, and the tension only mounts.
Hey that's a good way to look at it. I usually think "how many more of these am going to get today" but your perspective is much healthier! I'll try to adapt it.
These types of courses are great for when you are feeling it and can take on the world. Bethpage Black from the tips is my course for this type of humbling experience
Kudos to you Rick, a lot of people on RUclips would not post a video of themselves playing that course under those condition. The course is similar to my home course in one respect, every hole seems to be into the wind! Well done!
Love this Rick. Reminds us that you are human after all (even though I would have probably shot 100 on the first 9). Would love to see one where you play your home course off the red tees

Rick the hardest course I've ever seen ( on TV ) is where here in the States the Korn Ferry Tour plays its tour final, called Victoria National in the state of Indiana. I watch a lot of golf and have never ever seen a course so tough. On every hole there is no bailout left or right off the tee, on every approach to the green there is no bailout short, long, left, right, and on layups to any hole there is not bailout short, long, left or right. The old saying here " if this is the only course I could ever play again, then I'd find something else to do applies " . I watch the Korn Ferry tour final every year looking for bailouts I've missed, there are none, it's one hell of a tough course. Good video as usual.
When we're stressed a bit on the course, we start over swinging and then lose accuracy. Think this one has gotten Rick stressed a bit as he isn't his usual self. Love watching the LPGA. The women play within themselves, mostly never over swing and can score around par on courses that are often long (relatively the same as this one for women) require wood and rescue club approaches. Just drive in play, put your approach in good position, have a tidy short game. Rick let this course affect his swing and it cost him his usual good play.
played there twice Rick just like yourself, I remember a video with you and Pete. But I certainly did not use the back tees, great to see you up in our area again. Great video as always
Agreed! Started watching Bryanbrosgolf and there is such a stark difference in attitude even when playing bad. I get this course is hard and I love Rick but not fun to watch someone whine for 9 holes, already listen to my toddlers whine all day lol
This is such a great lesson for me. You play well often on courses that give you a chance to recover. When you get to a difficult course you try and play smart but make some common mistakes. The mental game questions itself and you start sinking instead of staying optimistic and keeping to a plan regardless of final score. I really want to overcome this part of my game and play better on challenging courses. I know the first step is to enjoy the round above struggling to score.
Used to play off 8 Handicap, 6+ years ago i moved to Australia and my golf stopped. Officially been getting some cracking 2nd hand deals and i have officially had my 1st driving range session since leaving Ireland And struck the ball very well. Happy to say Mr Rick Shiels and Tour 2k21 got my craving golf again lol. Keep the videos coming Rick. Ill be watching from sunny Warm Sydney :D
Rick! I think every golfer is open to a challenge! Going in, you knew what to expect and you had your scoring limitations set. Enjoyed seeing common struggles you were having and that every golfer has during a round. Intimidation is always a heavy factor in any sport and I think this had to do with your play today! Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and look for another challenge.
Rick -- from Colorado USA really need a timely video on tips for ball striking and chipping on winter/dormant grass as its that time of year now. i shoot consistently in the mid to high 80s all season but when winter golf comes around i suffer from poor connection, fat shots and even shanks from the hard ground grabbing my club. Sure many others could benefit from a video like this as well.
Damn Rick, I felt your frustration! That's pretty much how I feel every time I go out. Then you hit that one or two good shots that keeps you coming back again and again!
Great to see you playing on one of my local courses, Rick. I’ve only played Rockliffe off the yellows but it’s brutal if you’re not striking the ball well. I was 5 over handicap (26) and came off buzzing!!! Can’t wait to see you get revenge on the back 9
Rick, I feel your pain. I used to play a course called the Ko’olau Golf club which I believe was ranked as hardest on the tour for a time in the 90s. Not terribly long, but absolutely brutal, cut into terraces in the spines of the Hawaiian mountains with ravines and elevation changes everywhere. You drive the cart across bridges reminiscent of Indiana Jones and have to hit a Roos said ravines onto tiny little greens. Great memories
Been waiting to see this video Rick - I was teeing off on the 1st just as you were finishing on the 18th. I played off the yellows, as most sensible people would (still 6,500 yards) and actually had a blob free round scoring 44 points off my club handicap (18.6 which round there gave me 23 shots!!!). I found the back 9 easier than the front, I hope you did as well!
Great video Rick! One thing I feel like would be cool is on every iron shot showing where it lands just like with the driver. Makes it easier to follow the game when you can tell where the ball goes!
Real brute of a course, but it demonstrates how much of this game is in the head. Thanks for showing this Rick, warts and all. Can't wait for the back nine.
"Fairway to hell." Love it. Reminds of a course I used to play when I lived in Cincinnati, Ohio. 8th hole, par 5, fairway c.25 yards wide, 612 total yards, with the back tee box being 100 yards behind the next one. And the trail to the back tee was dodgy (at best). Always the risk of turning an ankle. The only upside: the hole was mostly downhill. But only after you hit a 275+ drive.
Is there any game that has more of a mental side? I mean, I know every sport does to some extent but golf has to be the one it plays the biggest factor right?
Rick, I can emphasize with what you feel. As a Canadian our golf season is limited. This is how every course looks to me at the beginning of the season. Hope the back nine is better.
You should come play The Shoals-Fighting Joe course in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama. It is an 8092yd, par 72, links course, 78.6 rating, with a 146 slope. Longest hole on the course is 716yd. Avg distance of the 4 par 3's: 224yd. Avg distance of the 5 par 4's going out: 469yd. Avg distance of the 5 par 4's coming in: 465yd. Avg distance of the 4 par 5's: 632yd.
I think you've done well, with the wind and the fact it's not summer so not getting the summer run it's playing at least 10% longer than normal. Nice work so far
"its not cut. it went straight" Welcome to my world.. cuts when I want it to go straight and goes straight when I want it to cut. Cheers from the US. Love your stuff.
Definitely a hard course. This one was designed very well & you can tell it will push every golfer to use a vast majority of their knowledge to keep the score within par's reach. Very enjoyable to watch!
watching this makes me feel better as a 29 handicapper. there are par 4's and 5's on my home course that are just a shot too long for me. makes me feel comfortable knowing good golfers feel the same as I do as they go around
Can't wait to see part 2. I'm calling back nine you cut it down to only 6 over lol. Keep the gems coming. Watching your videos has helped me tremendously in just a few weeks 👍
I’ll give it up to you Rick. You keep a good attitude no matter how you’re hitting the golf ball. I’m trying to teach my 19 year old son that every shot will not be perfect but it’s a challenge to get him to listen. So he lets one shot that’s bad turn into mini sometimes.
I haven't played for about 7 years and wasn't very good at all, but I've been getting inspiration from your videos, Rick, and looking forward to getting out again. I just love watching Rick enjoying his golf, regardless of how well, or otherwise, it goes.
Loved this course 7 years ago and it looks even better now it's matured. Food at the clubhouse and the hotel were amazing too.
Rick, thanks for posting. It makes us weekend hackers feel better!
Damn Rick, I felt your frustration! That's pretty much how I feel every time I go out. Then you hit that one or two good shots that keeps you coming back again and again!
Love your vids Rick, watch all of them and they help a lot.
i shot a 108 and a par 75 just yesterday. I understand your pain Rick.
Good appreciation for what the pros deal with each week
I love the editing on these videos Rick !
Awesome video Rick. It really shows how mental this game is. I can’t wait for the second half to see if you come around.
Golf entertainment from Rick, never shy's away from the challenge. Very cool. I wonder what your buddies would score?
Wow, everything you experienced is like a high handicap golfer on normal to hard golf courses. Loved the video gives me a little hope.
Rick this does make me feel better! Thanks for the content as always.
Thanks for uploading this- makes me feel great 😂
Thanks Rick for taking me along.
Just found the bug for golf and your channel, can’t get enough. Just need to save up for some clubs ⛳️. Keep the videos coming 👍
I think you've done well, with the wind and the fact it's not summer so not getting the summer run it's playing at least 10% longer than normal. Nice work so far
I really love the honesty
"its not cut. it went straight"
Welcome to my world.. cuts when I want it to go straight and goes straight when I want it to cut.
Cheers from the US. Love your stuff.
Can't believe it. U actually make golf entertaining. Don't play at all but enjoy ur vids👍
It's important to remember that golf is a game. Rick, I feel your pain. Love your commentary and lessons.
Rick, thanks for this video. this is how every round goes for us amateurs.
I love all your videos but I think this one is most relatable to all of us who are bad at golf but continue to play every weekend! 😂
I haven't played for about 7 years and wasn't very good at all, but I've been getting inspiration from your videos, Rick, and looking forward to getting out again. Rockliffe Hall is 30mins away from where I live and I was hoping to give it a try, but after seeing this I think it would put me off for life! 😳
Great video Rick, that is one hard course mate, especially with that wind. 🌬
Great to see you in the Norrh East of England. You will nail it on the back nine.
Looking forward to the back 9. Beautiful course
this video is great, this is my usual game of golf. 21 over was my best score this season.
Can’t wait to see part 2, the course looks incredible but you have to do a break 75 episode from the white tee’s.
I’m new to golf and really love your videos!
Here in Alabama the hardest course around is the Judge at Capitol Hill . 78 par 72 8000 from the tips
Watching Shiels struggle makes my heart warm. Not gonna lie.
