আরব উপদ্বীপের মত কাতারও একটি উত্তপ্ত ও শুষ্ক মরু এলাকা। এখানে ভূ-পৃষ্ঠে কোন জলাশয় নেই এবং প্রাণী ও উদ্ভিদের সংখ্যাও যৎসামান্য। তবে দেশটিতে খনিজ তেল ও প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাসের বড় মজুদ আছে। এই প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদের কারণে দেশটির অর্থনীতি অত্যন্ত সমৃদ্ধ। বিংশ শতাব্দীর মধ্যভাগ পর্যন্তও এটি একটি তুলনামূলকভাবে দরিদ্র দেশ ছিল। ঐ সময় দেশটিতে পেট্রোলিয়ামের মজুদ আবিষ্কৃত হয় এবং এগুলি উত্তোলন শুরু হয়। বর্তমানে মাথাপিছু আয়ের হিসেবে কাতার বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে ধনী দেশগুলির একটি।
