- Time to feel the Kenergy on this one, because we're taking a look at the biggest film of 2023, Barbie. A polarizing film with a standout character played by Ryan Gosling, we look at another entry in the Did Nothing Wrong series with Ken! Was it intentional on the part of the filmmakers, and is Ryan Gosling truly /ourguy/?

I actually have met Ryan Gosling at a grocery store. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
is this true? if so Dam that's disheartening to hear.

I honestly don’t really have a problem that the Barbies are essentially militant feminists because it’s on brand for them to be in charge of everything.
But let’s take moment to appreciate how it took Ken literally less than a day to take over Barbie world after discovering the patriarchy.
It’s almost like, even in their own power fantasy, women fantasize about being dominated by men which is unironically the most common female fantasy.

Ken is just the modern Winston Smith from 1984. He's a tragic character who is taught the reality of his dystopian world and attempts to break out only to be shoved back in. The fact that he, the other Kens, and the canonically nonexistent patriarchy are portrayed to be the villains shows something deeply twisted about the film's creator and Hollywood more broadly.
To be honest, I really do think that Ken's character arc is feminist in nature.
It is all about people being enough - no matter the gender. And that is what the feminists want in this era.

It also promotes Democracy, which is a horrible system when you just ended a Master/Slave society.
Honestly, after watching the movie awhile back I thought about a possible movie center around Ken and him trying to find himself outside of the barbie world. Another inspiration for this is listening to Apollo from last dinosaur and how this music would fit the Ken movie idea. Also the Apollo song is good so you should listen to it.
I believe that the movie was a gender role switch. :)

No, Ken made Patriarchy while Barbie made Matriarchy, both are wrong, the right would be create a happy place for both men and women.
In the movie the barbies were happy under Ken apart from 3, that's where the whole accusations of brainwashing came from. The movie really fails at presenting a counterargument to it's presentation of "patriarchy"

I hated this depiction of Barbie. Ken will never be irrelevant, otherwise they would have discontinued him a long time ago, like that would ever happen. This Barbie was confusing, we first see her in the classic bathing suit from 1959 as she smiles like the Cheshire Cat as the little girls begin smashing the baby dolls. I found this all too disturbing. Would an actual fan of Barbie even include such imagery? Some say it was an allegory for abortion but It's a direct parody of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I thought it was symbolic of how Greta Gerwig feels about dolls in general.
Greta Gerwig, who directed and co-wrote Barbie with her Baby Daddy Noah Baumbach, said in interviews that her mother was never a fan of Barbie and discouraged her from playing with them. But when you live in a neighborhood where all the kids play with Barbie dolls obviously you feel left out. So when Greta was finally allowed to play with Barbie they were hand-me-downs from neighbors and they all had no shoes, which is where the whole stupid flat feet joke emanated. So basically she got the homeless Barbies and then decided to make all the Ken's jobless and homeless, despite the fact that like Barbie Ken has had a varied career throughout the decades. Greta may have played with the dolls but I have a feeling that her mother's influence rubbed off on her.
Barbieland is supposed to look like the perfect world, but it's all just a facade. It's my understanding that this world exists because of the imagination of children, like how Barbie floats down from her Dreamhouse like a child holding the doll to her car. But if this were true why is there a routine? Do kids even know what matriarchy is? They all go to bed and wake up at the exact same time. Kids are unpredictable and sometimes would wake up in the middle of the night, adults have routines and tell kids what to do, but not in imaginary land.
I thought Margot Robbie's Barbie would be the first or original but instead is called "Stereotypical Barbie" which is just code for blonde bimbo. Barbie never explains why she feels nothing for Ken, even though they were manufactured as the IT couple. This reminded me a little of Superman, Clark was always simping for Lois but like the original comics Lois treated Clark like Barbie. But we all know it has a happy ending where they eventually get married and have kid/s. Apparently, Barbie will never get married. According to the wishes of Barbie creator Ruth Handler, part of Barbie's appeal to young children was that she defied patriarchal norms, and would never walk down the aisle toward Ken or have children. Well that's disappointing, but you can still imagine they got married.
In the movie Ruth Handler specifically tells Barbie: "I created you so you wouldn't have an ending" she even explains that being human is uncomfortable, humans have only one ending and then you die. But even after her experience in the FAKE real world, where she gets sexually harassed, called a fascist and arrested twice, she's still insistent on becoming human. WHY?!! It's in the script. I can't forget the scene when she walks off with Ruth and everyone waves goodbye to her, Ken even thanks her. But there isn't a single shot of her looking back to even acknowledge any one of them. Which just goes to show that she never cared about any of them and is only looking out for her happiness and personal gain. People who praise the movie seem to overlook this very simple scene, and IMO tells you exactly how toxic this movie really is.

I don't know if you are into video games at all but the character Adler from the indie horror game Signalis would be a fascinating study. Although an antagonist to the player, his motivations are revealed to be re sympathetic when the reveal of what is actually going on in the game. In some ways, Alder is the only sane individual in a world going mad.

Ken goes back, makes everyone happier, and then Barbie comes back to ruin the better society Ken created where both the Kens and Barbies were happy just so she can then peace out and leave the destruction behind her.
