Greetings from the Highlands.... Point 3 is tough.....surrounded by stress- drug/alcohol addict brother, neurologically crippled elderly mum, (reckon for sure that was the "safe and effective"), partner who drinks too much and won't get out on her damn bike, beloved dog in it's last stages of life , and a job/boss I couldn't stand any longer...So I quit my job 3 months ago and have claimed my pension early at 55....I've found that I can cope with the other bits far easier now without work being in the way of everything, and that this was in fact the biggest stress factor of all, a totally unnatural scenario of being somewhere you don't want to be and can't smack them in the face and/or walk away...until you do. No regrets. I rationalised it as my life having fixed and variable parts in it, family is fixed, the job was a variable therefore first to go.... and waking up naturally rather than to a howling alarm must be far less stressful to the soul so another bonus...
Coach, spoken like a real trooper. Your knowledge and experience is next to none and there's always something valuable to take away for everyone at any level.
I do 10 press ups every day and 20 minutes yoga in the morning and 30 minutes every evening. As you say, oach, you only get out of life what you put into it. I feel so much better dor doing some thing every day. At 63 u love life. Best thing I did was got rid of arse holes. Thanks for the advice, coach.
I am 62 and really enjoy cycling. The old saying you are too old for this is a load of crapage is just a number. I try and do yoga every day when on the bike sip a drink every 10 min. If your urine is clear, then I think it's about there. Coach you are a great help. Thanks
Excellent video! Add the following and you're on my journey: Intermittent fasting. First thing out of bed, drink a tall glass of water you prepared the night before, second thing, no food til noon (only 1 black coffee and water). Third thing: happiness is a choice you can make. I don't have everything but I am content and as a result of my choices I feel younger and healthier than I ever have. Oh, and cycle 40 km every day or cross country ski 12 km every day in winter. I'm wealthy enough to be able to do these things every day, most of you are too.
Hi Scott, I'm a 68 year old cyclist who also does a bit of running. Recently started jogging with a weighted backpack and have seen a marked improvement not only with my running performance but also on the bike. I guess it's the resistance aspect improving muscle tone and bone strength....just a thought.
Terrific coaching, Scott. Like most of the other respondents, I'm an older rider (71) and have discovered that your "Big Three" age defying techniques are right on the money. Nothing has more bang for the buck then hydration, resistance training and de-stressing strategies. If I may, however, I'd like to add a fourth. REST! Over the years, my work outs have not gotten any less intense but they certainly have gotten less frequent. The science is clear, it takes an older athlete longer to recover than his younger counterpart. Heck. just look at ATP replenishment . Unfortunately, many of us who carefully plan every workout, every meal, etc, usually fail to "plan our rest", i.e. our recovery. We tend to get to sleep "whenever", rise when we are obligated too (which isn't the same as getting up when the body is ready), eat or drink the wrong things just before sleep, etc. In general, we get our 5 to 8 hours and assume that we are good to go. As we enter our 60's and 70's the rest portion of the athletes life, takes on immensely more importance. I'm constantly amazed by peers who proudly claim they can get by on 5-6 hours of sleep/day. Little do they know that they are doing exactly that, just getting by.
My personal take on this and I’ve been a keen cyclist for over 30 years, is that you need to incorporate heavy barbell strength into your routine. Squats and deadlifts are super important as you age. The stress aspect is a very tricky one. Exercise is a stressor and coupled with work and life stresses can mean you get sick easier than someone who doesn’t suffer from general stress. I find aspect 3 the reason why I can’t do 5 sessions/ week. I’m hoping to quit the corporate rat race soon and do something more chilled.
With riding ¨only¨ every other day and doing 200-250km hilly rides a week at 70 I can maintain my level without injuries. Sometimes I do 2 rest days in a row. And seldom more than a weeks rest. A few months off and gaining weight are the big problem when you are older. Pleasure and consistency seem key-principles at advanced age. Performance will follow. (pleasure for motivation and consistency to avoid shocks to the system)
At 70, I find having a ride everyday helps as well. Half hour is enough. A bit like riding to work without the tedious bit at the end. I find the best way of destressing is on the bike.
I’m 58 and cycle 200-300km every week. I feel active and young in my head but my non-cycling friends and colleagues who don’t exercise like I do keep telling me that I’m getting old and should be feeling like like they do. They tell me I should be accepting that age fact and give in to it. Let me tell you, I’m not listening to them and I’m not giving in to age. Those are the a.holes I need to avoid.. I’ve got a long, long way ahead of me yet! My dad was still playing competitive tennis fixtures at age 80 so there’s no reason why I can keep riding well for the next 20 years
Brilliant video Scott! I am a member of Skool, and when you asked the question the other day about what is old, you got me thinking as a 50yr old- where am I at? For me, it’s the stress levels (primary school teacher!) and what I can do to fix them. Thank you for your insights. As ever, they’re so valuable. Keep these videos coming 👍🏻
Thanks Coach! Great straight forward information that can be adopted and applied to real daily life. The biggest challenge for me is the last one - as I think my job might sucking the life out of me daily with all the negativity and constant bickering.
Hi Scott, A lonely third place position with a lap to go and I broke the rear wheel on a rock in a stream crossing.. Never mind and looking to next years Nationals.. Thank you again, Andy.
Thanks Coach, 3 simple steps but very effective, I love the 3rd tip - I apply this most of the time and upset people in the process but I don't care as my mental health is important!
'56 when I'm on my bike, typically first few minutes, it's often I have the same feeling of being on my bike as 1970 when i was racing jr class, and only my hair line shadow or glass reflection says contrary... we're fortunate to be able to be disappointed at being older.. my 12 yrs older sis says, gettin older isn't for sissies
As always Coach, a great video reminding us all of the simple but important points towards keeping us HEALTHY. Health should be the number 1 priority on everyone's list
2 years cycling 5/7 in a week... My hip flexor are allready crying 1 month ago.. 😅 Stoping me for cycling 3 weeks... Why this video just release now... Cruel... 😂😂😂 You are right coach; i never strech after ride... And not well managing stress; make me feel stagnan .. Fact that i always make progess when i stay in n zone 2 consistenly ... But always stagnan when i do a lot of hard session... Especialy on a grup ride.. 🙏👍☕
Best advice I've ever seen anywhere, and not just for cycling. (This is possibly a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much.) I definitely have been slacking on #1 and #3, and you've encouraged/reminded me to work on those things; thank you. 🙂
Well said Coach, I am nearly 61 and I can honestly say I do implement your ideas already and yes it works, I am just amazed by what I can do and how fit I am, and yes age is just a number.💯
Check your water intake by the color of your urine after a workout. It should have a very light color. Mostly it takes more intake than you would expect.
I’m a 75 year old returning cyclist (almost five year break) I’ve done a lot of solo workouts and I am now riding with my former cycling buddies. I recently rode with one of those 54 miles with 3500ft of climbing. I’m starting to feel stronger but I’m breathless on climbs, is there an efficient way to improve lung capacity?
Just keep pedalling and developing your zone 2 work. Mix in the zone 5 sessions once a week when you can. I am going to share a course in my Skool page where I also include breathing drills 👍
#Q I noticed on my goto Route and Segment 3.4 km at 3.5 % incline, that my Heartrate isnt as high (159) as eight years ago (172), which Strava estimates at 30 Watts less. I also find i cant reach higher HR-Levels as i could years ago. Is that this age thing?
It is age related. Don’t worry. You may still find days when you have high fitness and can push hard that you may hit the 160’s (especially when very hot)
Tip 1. Drink 2 litres of water a day. 😂😂 At 60 youll have to make sure youre never more than 5 minutes from a toilet. And expect to be up 3+ times a night if you drink this much.

It's one thing drinking enough water it's quite another drinking enough *quality* water.
Agreed - I am lucky living in 🏴
So true Scott.. Racing in the 60 to 70 years British National MTB race tomorrow. Always super advice & thank you..
Hope it went well 👍

Hey Coach... that thumbnail is hilarious. But I could see you still doing this in 30 years😆
Haha you are probably right - may even get to understand how a camera works properly by then (or have some robot do it!)
