It's Knocking, But Why? - Tearing Into Our 4.0 Jeep Daily Driver And Picking Through The Carnage

We bought this 98 XJ off Facebook Marketplace knowing it had major engine issues, but went ahead and drove it anyway...for more than two years and 70,000 miles, Knocking away the whole time.
We finally tore it apart and found the culprit, a piston with one of it's skirts completely broken out.
But, what caused this to happen in the first place? Here's how we examined the broken piston, It's rings and bearings and came to the conclusion that detonation was the culprit.
