- Author R.J. Palacio talks with Rich Fahle of Bibliostar.TV about Wonder, her first book published in 2012 that has become a classic among young readers and as part of school reading groups across the country. While originally released as a book for young readers, Wonder has become a very popular book for adults as well, crossing age and demographic boundaries, encouraging readers of all ages to "Choose Kind." The interview took place at Book Expo America on May 31, 2013.

August Pullman is not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. Sure, he's a huge Star Wars fan, he loves his dog, and he's got a pretty good sense of humor. But August was born with a craniofacial abnormality - a genetic defect that caused his facial features to be severely deformed. His life has never been "normal."
Despite his differences, August and his parents decide to transition him from home school to private school now that he's entering fifth grade. It's the start of middle school, they reason, so everyone will be new. But August has to deal with so much more than just being new. Will he make friends? Will he decide to stay at the school? And can the people around him learn to see past his appearance?
This brilliant, sensitive story - narrated not only by August, but also by his older sister, his classmates, and other kids in his life - takes an insightful look at how one person's differences can affect the lives of so many others.

So, I was assigned over the Summer to read Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. It was one of the best books I've read. I felt so much more understanding and feelings for a child like August with facial deformities. I absolutely LOVE this book. If anyone that has never read Auggie and Me after Wonder, I would recommend it. Auggie and Me was requested by my Reading teacher, and I'm glad I decided to get the book. Wonder is such a GREAT book!
I just finished reading the book-- like literally just now, and I swear I'm in tears. This is the best book I've ever read in my whole life.
I was lucky to meet Raquel (R.J.) at a book signing at the bookstore in which I toil. She is gracious and filled with compassionate humor. Not all writers reflect the tone of their books. She does. I am relieved that she seems adamant about not writing a sequel to "Wonder," which stands as it is. Its message is simple, oft-visited but always vital: We are who we are, not how we look. Be kind. Reach out. YOU MATTER.
I litteraly read the book 34 times, and I can easily say it changed the way I look at the world, thank you so much to RJ Palacio for this

I just started reading this book and man! I'm touched and heart broken just like Palacio. Kudos to her 👏🏼 I'm so happy that she wrote her experiences for us.
I saw the movie I read the book and I cried so much. Every time I hear life's adventures I cry. I love you R.J Palacio I wish I could meet her but I cant, thank you for being part of the community. You are my biggest inspiration.

I love this book so much. I'm only 1/2 way through with my kids (3, 7, and 11). They have learned so much. Just listening to N Merchant and discussing how just one person can make such a big difference. Facing the world is tough but engaging the world when you are different feels impossible for so many people.

I really wish this book would be turned into a movie. I haven't finished the book yet, but I would love to know what will happen at the end of the book. Seriously, if they made a movie out of it, I would feel so happy :( It's a nicely written book, with a great story, and I am saying that and I haven't even reached the end. GREAT BOOK !!
They recently optioned the motion picture rights to turn it into a movie. R. J. Palacio is even serving as producer apparently and is looking for "someone who doesn't just put on make up to look like August, but someone WHO IS August."

what? obviously you can't, it's a book...but if they turned it into a movie YES you would be able to see it if the creators decided to do so, the book even describes his face! all the book is basically about his struggle with the problem that afects his exterior look.

It was because, you know how teens don't really care about grammar? That's why it's like messed up, hope it helped :)
hahaha.. Actually, I just got curious why of all the chapters, only Justin's parts were in lower case. All small letters.

Not to break your bubble but the exact reason why he wrote in lowercase was neither because it was a typo nor was it because he didn't care, it was because, R.J. Palacio, being a graphic designer as well, she learned to recognize fonts as not only letters of words but visual representations of other things. Justin is a musician and his thoughts flow and stream together rapidly, leaving no time for grammar and spelling.
