I agree. And the last carrier fighter with any legs to her (range) at about 1400 miles. The F/A-18 only has a range of 500 then needs a tanker. I wish the Navy would bring back range to its carrier aircraft fleet.
I was a member of VF-103 when they flew their last cruise with F-4S Phantom II's onboard U.S.S. Forrestal CV-59. Then we transitioned to the F-14A in 1983. In 1984 we did a showboat cruise on board U.S.S Saratoga CV-60. That was after she came out of SLEP (Service Life Extension Program) and then it was Forrestal's turn in SLEP.
Hello squadron mate!! I was with VF-103 Sluggers '91-92. We had the F-14B and flew off of the USS SARATOGA CV-60. Interesting note... I was at our local Applebee's having dinner and met a Navy veteran that served with Fighting 103 when they had F4U Corsair aircraft. I only wish we had gotten a photo together.
I was on Nimitz 83-86 and the Rogers were my favorite squadron. The EA 6b's however were my favorite aircraft at the time. In any case ALL of Nimitz pilots had that swaggar to make actors like Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer look like Chorus Girls. They knew they were the best and the baddest on the planet on that ship. I miss that rumble of flight ops sleeping under the flight deck all day because I was night shift. It was like being rocked to sleep.
Working the Mid Watch can be a pain. You mentioned the EA-6B and all the aviators swaggers. It reminded me of a line from Stephen Coonts. “Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make History!” Glad you enjoyed the video.

They should have updated the Tomcat with new engines, avionics, electronic warfare suite, all digital computers, and aesa radar. The so called super Hornet still doesn't even come close to replacing the older Tomcat models.
I disagree the only thing the Tommy had on the Bug was thrust. The Hornet even the legacy birds could turn inside of it, it was also impossible to put an F/A-18 of any model into a flat spin. The Tomcat was a sexier looking plane, and it’s thrust, climb, and AIM-54 Phoenix Missile made it like a sore dick in the interceptor department you just couldn’t beat it. Nothing anybody had could. I love the hornet don’t get me wrong especially with the block three upgrades, but I Believe in my heart that there was A place on the carrier deck for both the planes, I don’t believe it would’ve cost too much to retrofit existing B through D model Tomcats to the Tomcat 21 standard, because even with the fact they have the new EPE Engines pushing 20% more dry thrust and 35% more wet thrust, putting an infrared search and track (IRST) and working on an air launched Variant of the SM6 missile for the Hornet, tomcat is still slightly faster and has slightly better rate of climb then even though it’s improved Block III Super Bug. Any aviator this worth their wings Will tell you that just because something will suffice, doesn’t mean that seconds still don’t count. From a logistical standpoint I can see why the Navy did it because having only one type of platform with 80% commonality from it’s other platforms creates less of a logistical nightmare, however it makes a flight decks really boring just seeing one type of fighter Aircraft on it. Watching movies from the early to mid 80 into the 90’s seeing seeing aircraft carriers having their decks packed, with A-6E’s, E/A-6B’s, F/A-18A/C/D’s, S-3A/B’s and F-14A/B/D’s is far more exciting then just seeing a flight deck packed with F/A-18E/F’s E/A-18G’s, that fat disgusting looking F-35C. Not a plane in our arsenal today that includes the F-22A is sexier than the F-14.
@@WarGasm0824 - During 1985 through 2000, the F-14D was the upgrade from F-14a/b. F-14D had all improved digital design with its internal display Hud, mfd, and ptid. It had improved weapon software as Air to Air (aim-120 & HARM) and Air to Ground(bombs). The problem why F-14 retired in 2006 was the stop of F-14 production around early 1990 from Congress. F-14D had all functionalities of the F-18. During this time, US was looking for the new ATF (F-18 is not ATF but it was cheaper) Software and hardware went to maintenance phase and shortage of parts.
