    For all we know, he watched and enjoyed Bollywood movies and just wanted to share it in the video he made. He did watch lots of films from what I recall.
    Through all the interviews over the years I really believe he was the kind of guy who didn’t want to make anyone sad or upset. He shouldn’t have been attacked for it. Was it the Indian community who had legitimate issues with it or just problematic “fans”?
    I really miss him.

    As a fan and an Indian, I actually find it very funny. Plus he must have looked at some Bollywood songs for inspiration. 😊
    It's a shame that people thought he was being disrespectful. The whole tone of the video is comedic, so maybe that's why some people thought it was offensive 🤔

    All the comments stop speaking over us desi people that find this offensive . And the desi people too saying they werent offended … okay ??? a lot of us were !!! stop saying he apologized for nothing because he did a great thing by writing such a heartfelt apology letter as soon as he was educated . he had the vcr scene removed , and he did the responsible thing . stop saying he shouldnt have apologized , because by apologizing not only did he show his desi shawols that he cares and he is truly sorry , he also educated himself and learned something new !! what he did was a great thing and you dont understand how much it means to some of us . getting apologies for things like this in the kpop industry is difficult , we dont get apologies most of the time . but jonghyun apologized immediately without any company statement , he took it upon himself and proved that he is a good person . this apology proved his good qualities , and didnt hurt anyone . and i PROMISE you that jonghyun is not filled with hatred or despair because of people for being offended and wanting an apology . he cares for us , and he showed us that he does , so please respect us desi shawols , and respect jonghyun who did the right thing .

    He literally parodied his own culture in that same vcr. The full young and rich vcr. what’s so controversial about it? I just feel bad that he even had to apologize over nothing.

  • @winterbody
    @winterbody 7 лет назад +287

    I'll say just it.
    This was not racist just a parody like many others, it wasn't made with ill motives. There are many parodies about Bollywood but people don't say anything.
    It is in kpop where people try to destroy other artists just for competitive motives.
    The full VCR looked amazing with Bollywood part.
    I showed it to my indian friend who isn't in kpop and he just laughed.
    I saw many Bollywood films with my friends sister like "ASOKA INDU" and it was a good parody.

    • @shaniajustina
      @shaniajustina 7 лет назад +26

      This is so true. People exaggerate too much (the people are not even part of the South Asian ethnicity!) and I feel like if you have seen VCRs in the past you know the main purpose of it is to entertain the audience in breaks. He was just trying to make it entertaining and by dressing up in a different style, he looked sort of funny because it's rare to see him dressed like that. The sole purpose was just for laughter. Laughter intended on HIM, not on the CULTURE.

    • @lupitanurputriagustina9743
      @lupitanurputriagustina9743 7 лет назад +10

      Nightmare Yes I agree that his purpose is not going to underestimate any kind of region... but we still have to respect his decision to delete this part in VCR soon right? I think his purpose is not letting the problem become bigger. Even we know that he's not fully in the wrong position but I'm really proud of him because he can overcome this matter soon by doing public apologizing ny himself also explained everything in details so that his fans will not misunderstanding about it again..
      Also i'm so pissed off with everyone who dragging him without any reasonable statement, and without seeing the truth..

      Nightmare Kitna mast hai ye song. I love SHINee. Aisa nhi hai ki main apne country se zyada SHINee se pyar karti hu, but I'm a shawol too. And this "controversial part" was just a parody. And that didn't even look like "Bollywood" and "Indian culture". Jo log bahut zyada ch*#@ya honge na, wahi comment karenge ki "Deshdrohi" hai and all that. But its just a parody, not a racism. I'm with you bro.

The only people I've seen get offended over this is everyone who ISNT Indian. Who made you think it's okay to get offended for someone who isn't even offended in the first place

      He was miserable with everyone hating on him. He shouldn't have been a a K-pop star like what he wrote in his suicide letter. I think jonghyun would have been more happy as a writer or radio host. He suffered so much thanks to Horrible fans who always got in the way of his joy. They made him break up with his one true love. She went to his funeral. She was still in love with him after all this time. You terrible fans drove him to take his life and also seasonal depression.

That's very stupid and I think that he has to the rights to combine culture and create music. It's not a sin. If some people are offended by this then they just want attention that's it.

    Well, you all have to look Indonesia music show. They imitated so much of Indian culture. They having fun with that. Why?? Because they like or love your culture. But i don't hear or read any complaints about that.

    Get over what happened already. This was so many years ago. Jonghyun was setup by sm to fail like always. This man was a kindhearted soul. He would never disrespect another culture. He just went along with what sm told him to do. Jonghyun realized he shouldn't have been a mindless Puppet to go along with the concept, so he generally apologized for acting so foolish. His apology was sincere no matter what people think.

    I don’t find this video offensive in any way. The man was just contributing an act and showing his interest into the Indian culture. I find it so disgusting that people were so quick to bash him and call him racist. Everytime Jjongie does something right,the haters come right away just to bring him down. This VCR isn’t the first issue people had with him. Remember the statement about women being inspirations and the controversy over sexual minorities? I don’t get it. The world says its okay to voice your opinion and you have the right to say what you want. But the minute someone shares their thoughts, the whole world is against them. Even when the statement is nowhere near disrespectful.I’m telling you this world is so fucked up in many ways. And the haters are too fucking ignorant. Now it’s there fault cause our sweet Jjong is no longer here. The man was going through a serious illness and people bashing him just make matters worst. I know I have been writing long but as a fan Jonghyun and Shinee, this seriously just makes me upset. And not just to them but for every idol and artist in the world. People really need to think about a situation before they open there mouths 💯

    This is offensive no matter how you look at it. Jonghyun made fun of Desi culture and that's all there is to it. Don't make excuses like "Oh I showed this to my indian friend and they enjoyed it" your one friend doesnt speak for the whole culture and race??? Like one opinion doesn't represent a diverse culture. Don't be an apologist. Face the facts, and even though he apologized doesn't mean we should forget this ever happened. This is inexcusable and it was plain wrong.

    • @kittygurljae9525

      Ok so one person who didn't find it offensive doesn't speak for the whole culture/ race, but one other person who did find it offensive does speak for the whole culture/ race? That's not how it works, it's simply a matter of someone's personal view on it and the opinion they have of it, and even though a lot of people did find it offensive, there were still a whole lot of people left who did not. So it is not offensive as a fact - just as an opinion. Jonghyun NEVER intended on making fun of any culture, he's not the kind of person to publicly do that. There is a HUUUUGE difference between wanting to use something for a VCR for fun, and making fun out of something. What he did was making an attempt to entertain people for fun, while there are also artists/ shows (such as Family Guy, South Park) who clearly and openly make fun out of something. He apologized, explained why he thought it would be okay to use and thát's all there is to it. Does it make everything better again for everyone? No, of course not, but instead of drowning in disappointment/ anger/ sadness just because he made a simple mistake by thinking it would be okay... How is that going to make it all better? It would rather be better to forget about instead of bringing it up all the time, that wouldn't make him or anyone else feel any better. He's a smart guy, if there's anyone who has learned from their mistakes it's definitely him and I'm sure he won't let it happen again.

      its funny cause people from desi culture dont think its offensive and people who arent even indian or any neightboring country think its offensive... thats just ill and disgusting.

    • @GraceHa
      @GraceHa 7 лет назад +2

      I'm not trying to imply that he didn't learn from the backlash, or bring any hate to him but this is cultural appropriation and many people from desi culture think it's offensive. Even if one person finds it offensive, it's still valid. I've seen many people say how offensive they found it, even if it was just for fun. Some people didn't enjoy it, some people were hurt by how he made fun of their culture. One thing I can say for sure is that this is cultural appropriation. "Cultural appropriation is the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of another culture." It was wrong and he apologized and it was settled.

    • @GraceHa
      @GraceHa 7 лет назад

      It's funny how you think everyone from desi culture don't find this offensive at all. Some people who aren't from the culture KNOW that this is cultural appropriation and are speaking against it. Who are you to speak for everyone?

      Jonghyun is an example of how even socially aware conscious people can slip up and unintentionally do/say problematic things without realizing it. What’s important is how they handle being called out, and Jonghyun did the right thing by instantly apologizing, owning up to what he did, and proceeded to delete the offensive part from his VCR immediately after receiving backlash by K-Shawols (yes, it was K-Shawols who told him that that segment of his VCR was in poor taste and offensive to Indians and other South Asians). He took full responsibility for his own actions and didn’t have SM make a statement for him (which would make his apology look insincere if he had done so). I’m not a Shawol but I’ve always admired Jonghyun for owning up to his mistakes and even inviting fans to call him out if he ever does anything problematic because he wants to be a better person and human being. If you still continue to drag him after this despite him giving a genuine and heartfelt apology, well, that’s your loss and just shows that you don’t care that he’s taken steps to educate himself and better himself. You can dislike that he did something like that in the first place but you can’t pretend as if he never apologized or is not genuinely sorry about the whole thing. Yeah, he could’ve educated himself before he did it, but he still learned that it was wrong in the end. No one is 100% problematic-free, not even the most socially progressive person you know.

    He is trying to make fun of Indian dances/culture but what he does not realize is most Indians dont even know that korea is a country. Its too insignificant a country for us. Its like that movie " the mouse that roared".

      Dont we make fun like this....why is this considered to be offensive....and not knowing a country is nothing to brag about. India has her own specialities so does Korea....he just used our clothing style and vibes to make people laugh....making people laugh is not a bad thing....its way too better than unnecessarily trolling them and making issues out of small matters
