I think giving Metalocalypse a second look-over might be worth it. Brendon Small worked hard making sure most of the guitar work and stuff was accurate. That was his baby.
Not to mention Brendan actually plays the guitar parts.

I like how the people who made Coco know more about animating guitars than a show literally based on metal
Actually, Metalocalypse is animated %100 accurately Brendan Smalls the creator and lead guitarist prides himself on the fact it is all accurate animation and says that he wanted a show where the guitar playing matched the animation they actually do animate %100 correctly. I have also seen Brendan Smalls do this on guitar it sounds right so what I am wondering is if he tried to play it in E standard while Brendan Smalls plays in drop C.

Skwisgar in metalocalypse actually did a legit tutorial including tabs. I've seen it. It was also revealed that they used actual musicians in motion capture suits. I saw that too. Hm. Lets see.

Coco actually did have a guitarist with them on set. I can’t remember if they used a mo-cap suit or just recorded a bunch of reference shots but you can really tell how much of a difference it made!

They did both, actually. They recorded hours of footage of guitarists playing, and they did do some motion capture on the fingers. They did the same with Soul to get the piano playing as authentic as possible.
I love that Pixar goes the extra mile because it really does pay off. If a big part of the theme of the movie is music, you better get the playing right or it's really disingenuous.

The Simpsons one was clearly a reference to the modern days of Thall and the prevailing low tunings in this genre, implicating the high G string to be tuned to E1, making it the highest string on a bass tuned to C#0 standard. I don't understand how someone could not see this, it is blatantly obvious.

The funny thing about the last one is that he was playing a G right before changing to the D. Since all the rest of his playing was right, I wonder if the animators just screwed up from the chord list the guitarist advisor gave them? It was so close. Check it out and you will see a perfect G right before he switches to the D.

Or maybe they did animate everything correctly, but the person who edited and cut all the scenes (after the animation was fully rendered) probably screwed up somewhere in the editing process. By putting scene where Miguel strums the D major chord instead of a scene where he strums G major.
Though the Metalocalypse was wrong, what they were "actually playing" still sounded pretty cool. The " actual" version in itwpi kinda reminds me of Maiden or Priest
It wasn't in the correct tuning. Dethklok plays in Drop C mostly, and he referred to that string as an "E String" because his character is a really stupid guitarist that's bad with everything but actual playing and getting laid, including teaching his barely competent bassist how to do the riff right.

Never heard of a few of these cartoons, but they look interesting. Addie and Anna love Cocomelon therefore they watch it over and over again. No wonder they are a top RUclips channel. The parents have all the episodes on loop playing, hence the million views. Hahahahaha. That 3 MIL is within reach now Steve. Can't wait to see what you have planned for that. Wow, was not expecting the last one to be as accurate as it was. Although, I know that for CGI animation they’ll use actual people to base it off of which would account for the accuracy of the finger movements. It did look real, though! And I remembered seeing that South Park clip and being excited about the fact that they were playing metal. Lol It was almost as great as when the writers of Spongebob decided to throw in some Pantera. 🤘😂

disney and pixar animations usually pay a lot of attention to their musical instruments, take soul for example, where they literally created a new software to get the piano playing as realistic as possible.
@@SteveTerreberry right. Big difference between CGI animation and hand drawn animation in terms of detail. Also, many hand drawn cartoon characters have less than 5 fingers.
@@SteveTerreberry Pixar don't use motion capture. They just use reference footage. So they had video footage of someone actually playing the song and the animator had to follow that footage to make the character play the instrument too.
The real difference between Pixar and Cocomelon is that Pixar spend millions of dollars and several (around six) years per movie.

Coco being the only one that was CGI, I suspect that the guitar playing was actually motion captured rather than animated.
Always satisfying when you see an animation done realistically. You should do all the random guitarist that play around Night City in the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, see if their animations are legit! Might be the only thing in that game they got right for all I know! LOL XD
Coco wasn’t the only cgi one out of those.
And from what I remember there is no motion capture in it, but they did go to really great lengths to get it right, analyzing a loot of footage they had done specifically for that purpose and making damn sure that every minute movement of his hand and fingers is accurate.
They did the same for the piano playing on Soul, too.
Pixar NEVER use motion capture. But they do use a lot of reference footage. I honestly wouldn't expect less from them.

Makes me wonder if they did motion capture for Coco. That would explain it. Traditional animation wouldn't be impossible to do proper fingering assuming anatomically correct fingers, but it's a lot of extra work for very little reward (since you might be the first person to publicly call out animators for a long time cheat).

I was just watching Metalocalypse the other night and was wondering is the guitar playing really played correctly, and what would Stevie think of this? Lol. I find myself analyzing guitar scenes every time I see them in cartoons and tv shows to see if they’re guifaking. @@Alfamaxis Yeah I feel like some of the early stuff is kinda funky, but the dude who wrote the music is the creator of the show and said he really wanted it to be accurate for the guitarists so I'm pretty sure alot of the stuff is actually pretty well done. I know there's a Skwisgar guitar lesson that's accurately drawn since they literally give you the tabs on screen to compare.

Coco is honestly one of my favorite Disney movies now because they nailed the guitar playing and actually took the time to make it authentic 👌
Alternate Perspective Alert: I’m pretty sure they animated that correctly but, the guitarist was playing a G when Coco was singing down to a D. The finger positioning was accurate. HOWEVER…the guitar audio recording was not. The guitarist needed to be playing D and not G. Someone fell asleep at the wheel on that.
I'm not sure if Pixar had actual motion capture yet on Coco but they surely had it for the piano playing on Soul, which lead to some truly beautiful scenes that make sense on the keys.

An anime called K-on was pretty accurate at times atleast when it came to being in a band more than the actaully playing maybe, but i remember one episode where the main character has been practising guitar like hell and then waving good bye to her friends she hold a A major chord, which i thought was pretty funny

Since I found your channel I question every guitar scene I witness. Movies,cartoons...etc. My daughter has even recognized some herself. More recently we watched boss baby 2 and there's a pretty suspicious guitar scene in that movie. We looked at each other in the theater like 👀🤔. Awesome video as always.
